A quick low tech "how to" on chalk holder conversions.
I started where everyone else did, trying to find the actual item: Dosimeters. I compiled several photos of them but not the actual item. I started my chalk holder conversion by heading back to Lowes and buying some #8 finish washers in stainless steel. 5 for .88ยข Some Rust-Oleum metallic brilliant metal finish #7251 (cobalt blue) spray paint. Some 5-minute epoxy. All together including my chalk holder #74541. I am going to make 4 chalk holders for my officer's uniform so I spray painted 4 of the finish washers. I popped off the rounded white cap off of the end of the chalk holder and filled it with 5-minute epoxy just in case I sand through it on the next step. Waited for the epoxy to dry and sanded it flat. I then touched it up with some aluminum spray paint I had lying around so it would match the body of the chalk holder. I then popped the painted cap back onto the chalk holder and super glued the painted finish washer onto the now flat top of the chalk holder. I am a little closer to the actual item shown below. Might try shortening the pocket clip but I think it will be close enough for now.

As I said on the legion board, these are excellent! and a low cost alternative to the real thing (especially since the real dosimeters are so hard to come by now).

I had to go online to find the same ones.
This is a great little how-to!

I found aluminum chalk holders through amazon.com but not .de and I had to get a friend to order them for me and mail them because they would not send out side the continental us. In the end I found other style dosimeters which can be altered easily enough to look more like the original so I am using both.

Re: A quick low tech "how to" on chalk holder conversions.
I tried this and my code cylinders came out pretty good. The only thing I did differently was that I found an aluminum washer to put in place of the plastic top. This I covered in aluminum foil cut a little bigger than the wash and wrapped around. I glued the foil down to the washer.
I glued the painted finishing washer on top of it. I think the aluminum foil gives it a worn look.
I'll post pcs up tomorow. I just need to add a better clip and they will be finished.

Hey Fellow Pilots, I just wanted to put up pics of my dosimeters. I used this tuturial. Of course, they are made of the infamous chalk holders. What do you think? I have someone making me a pair of the most accurate clip I have ever seen, but it will take a couple of weeks because he is doing them in his spare time.
