  1. I was just wondering if there was anything special about the IB iron on patches.  They are just really thin compared to others that I have seen.

Edit: Got a reply back from Vincent at IB.

"Iron-on reversed, that means pre-heat the jumpsuit with the iron so the sleeve is really hot, put the cog where you like, reverse the sleeve and iron from the back. I do it it by increment of 10seconds motion to make sure not to over heat it"

Thank you.  I will most likely go for Level 3 certification at some point.  Need to get an approvable costume up and running and then gradually work my way up.

Buy once, cry once.  If you are looking to go for level 3 (or just want something that looks better) definitely go with the real thing.  Better to spend $200-$400 now than to spend an extra $100+ now and then spend more later.

Definitely look into custom if you have "not normal" sized feet or calves (like me).

Yeah, I think I’ll just bite the bullet and get hessian custom boots, probably my best bet.

Buy once, cry once.  The custom options that people use (Hessen, Mux) are RELATIVELY cheap too, since they are more for costumes and not actual riding/military.  When I was looking for boots originally, I found a lot of custom stuff, at like $800-$1400.  ~$300 is not bad at all, especially when they last you.

  4. I think those are the ones that have the zipper on the other side, not hidden at all.  At that price point, you might as well go for Sovietboots.com or Antigua House on Etsy for the soviet style, or the Derby Cottage Craft PVC riding boots from Amazon.

I'm a big fan of CosplaySky for entry level and for non-primary costumes.  If you want to be an Officer and nothing else, and want to troop all the time, I think you can justify spending the Tier 2 - 3 prices.  That said, CosplaySky is the best bang-for-buck and if it's one of multiple costumes, of even multiple officers, you can't do better on the budget.

We have almost all CosplaySky olive locally, so we all blend well and honestly, the general public has no concept and never even notices.   It's all in how you weigh it and what works for you- and if your local area looks generally like they came out of the same ship, you're good.

The trick with CosplaySky olive is to get either 1 extra yard of fabric (about $30), and send it to a hat maker or make it  yourself (hats are rough- and I sew, so I don't recommend that unless you're really good), or there is a vendor on Etsy that does good hats and has the matching CosplaySky olive as a hat option- 20EyesDesign.  They have other Star Wars stuff too.

Cosplaysky is definitely the best deal out there and has good shipping times too, even for the custom orders.  I will probably be getting a 181st Dress from them as well.

Also, good point on determining what to get based on what people have locally.  I didn't even think about that.  CPS's color might be "off" but it would look better to have everyone uniform.

  6. Unfortunately for vendors, there is a huge jump in price.  There are 3 tiers for pricing, and the jump in price from tier 1 to 2 is huge.

    Tier 1 - Cosplaysky $100

    Tier 2 - *Magnoli*/Mazcave ~$800

    Tier 3 - Clothears ~$1200

I would recommend saving up for something better than Cosplaysky.  While they are fine for the black uniform, I feel like the green is just too green.  Personal opinion and people still get them approved, but I just saved up for Magnoli and am really happy with it.  I got the flares slightly altered, but other than that it has been perfect.

I didn't mention Anovos for multiple reasons.

*Edit* - Magnoli might have some other issues as well.  There is a thread about it floating around.

You can take them in yourself- just follow the existing curve, but take it in.  Sew on the new line with a heavy stitch to prevent fraying, and then cut off excess fabric.

To rein in the flares you re-do the seam to be smaller, because I don't think pulling in the thigh will do much good.  Unless they're just too lose in the thigh in which case you could also tighten the seam there, too.

Thanks for the info.  My wife went to this seamstress before and she does a bunch of costumes, so hopefully she can help me there.

  8. So I have the opposite problem with my Magnoli pants vs Cosplaysky.  The flares come out A LOT, to a rounded point.  Like, a distracting amount.  Is there an easy fix for this?  I was thinking maybe bringing them to a tailor and having them pinch a bit on the inside of my thigh since there is extra fabric there, thereby bringing in the flares.  Would that compromise the pants making extra seems at all?  Thanks?

Will these boots go up high enough on the leg? Are the designed as imperial officer boots?

These won't work for a Staff or Line officer.  They aren't tall enough and have the buckle, and someone else mentioned that they have the velcro in the back that is covered by the leather overlapping.

Best bet for officer boots is SovietBoots or eBay/Etsy.  You can look locally for stuff on Craigslist, letgo, offerup and any of the other dozens of clones that have popped up.  Thrift shops or estate sales might work too, but you would have to get lucky.

If you want something cheap, Amazon has these https://www.amazon.com/Ovation-Derby-Cottage-Rubber-Riding/dp/B002HOJOUO/

The title says rubber, but the are actually PVC.  Works for level 1 and work great if you are doing something in a wet and muddy field.  I have them as a back up.

Hessen antiques sells great officer boots. But if you have thick calfs, like me, you gotta find somewhere that custom fits boots.

Hessen Antiques does custom as well, and for $300, which is a steal for custom work.  Mux Leather on Ebay does custom for around $300 as well.  There is a third that I saw posted somewhere recently, but I can't recall at the moment.  You can set up alerts on eBay for searches to see if you can find used ones in good condition.  A cobbler or leather working shop in your area should be able to do small things, like cut the calf down if its too tall, or expand the calves a bit if they are a little too tight.

Boots are definitely a pain to find a good pair to fit you well.  I also got a pair of cheap ($60) PVC boots from Amazon for those Troops that take place in a field.

  11. So you can also do General Delivery.

    https://about.usps.com/news/national-releases/2012/pr12_125.htm    You want "Option 2"

Replace John Doe with your name and "ANYTOWN, NY 12345-9999" with the town state and zip code for the location of the post office you want to use.  You use an ID to pick it up (make sure the name on the ID matches the name on the package).

    Example:

    JOHN DOE
    GENERAL DELIVERY
    ANYTOWN, NY 12345-9999
