There was a glassed display shown at the premier, but it was further inside.  This is a photo taken by Dateline.

This here is not a glassed display, but from a junket in town a few days before the premier.  These costumes are not under glass.

It could have been that this character was walking around on an actor.  There were first order troopers and Sith Troopers in a lot of photos, but nothing yet of this one.

That was my thought too. The after party is usually where that happened in the first two premiers. Photo ops and the like.

  2. thank you, we'll put the call out both privately and in the forums

Heard back from Rachel and Chris Bartlett. They don’t recall seeing it at the premier (although that’s not conclusive). Rachel is checking with some others tho.

  3. We really appreciate it.  I hope they can help with this.

Short answer was “nothing they can share ATM”. I don’t push back on the “why”.

However, did get guidance that the SEO “might” have been out on display during the premier. I’d start maybe some forensics and check with legion members (not just IOC) who attended the ROS premier and see if they grabbed photos. In the first two premiers (in Hollywood) costumes were in the lobby and after party areas in display. SoCal usually has a host of members that attend. I’d suggest a legion forum shout out and see if someone managed to nab a pic.

Beat the drums. See what turns up.
There’s one more former LFL contact who’s always at premiers I will reach out to.

  4.   If you are willing to pass on a contact I can reach I will ask them.  Or if you are willing to ask them directly.  We are just trying to see the back, mostly the lower back of this costume.  That will break this open.

Email sent. Hopefully they’ll have something they can share.

  5. FYI - In my past experience the costume designers are usually (as the case with most film folks) contractors hired on for a particular show. They aren’t full time employees with LFL so would not have access to the photo archives unless they are actively working on a show and that show has reason to need reference from SW. You’ll need to be engaging with full tone LFL employees that have access to the archive. Ask the LPRO office for help if you need it. They are very well connected but the LMOs all know this as well. Kris has done this a long time and I’m sure he’s got some names that could help.

  6. We have been diplomatically engaging.  We don't advertise these relationships, but they have been building over time.  Many of the people we are talking to are free with what they remember, but are cautious because of their relationship with LFL.  They can't publicly go on the record or share what they have.

I have seen high resolution photos of this costume and know some of the details that haven't been discussed here.  Because if I did, I probably wouldn't get to see anymore in the future.  LFL isn't open for two reasons:  one, this could be material that goes into another book and new material sells books.  Two: Sometimes seeing these costumes and props exposes alternate takes or changes in production and LFL has played it pretty close to the vest with all of the production changes.  The changes are famous.

Brian Anderson was famous for making costumes for the legion two weeks after the Clone Wars episode dropped.  He was one of our best LMOs ever and could sculpt and pull armor in his shop.  This attracted the attention of Dave Filoni and shortly thereafter Filoni started releasing character design sheets of characters publicly.  It would be great if this could be reestablished again or established so they post it with each episode for live action characters.

The twitter talk you are hearing is over the accessibility of Glyn Dillion who has been very open with answering questions for the costumes he designed for the last 5 movies.  Mr. Dillion has done chats for garrisons and other groups and we are going to have a chat with him and detachment members in the future.  It would be great if we could make him an honorary member, but we will need a change in legion policy as he doesn't go to many in person events and they do not allow virtual inductions.  He's friends with a number of people including myself but we cannot simply ask him for a photo, nor would we put him on the spot like some sort of vending machine.

We are actively working to develop relationships with all of the costume designers past and present related to this detachment.

I’m the past, I’ve asked LFL if I could publish “portions” of these photos to help define costume requirements and I’ve been given permission. See if they’d let you crop the rest and just focus on getting the details you’re looking for.

  7. Commenting on this long debate without sounding “judgy” is going to be a real challenge, but I’m going to try and help.

Here is some knowledge I’ll drop. If everyone knows this already, then please disregard but the latest talk about LFL leaves me thinking it may not be common knowledge.

Every single costume used in SW starting with ANH has undergone “continuity reference”. They are front, back and side photos that help the costume department maintain continuity whenever they have reshoots or costume variants (like for the stunt crew). There are some exceptions like for stand ins, but you can assume any primary costume has had these photos taken. This bit probably isn’t knowledge.

Next is that LFL has a “photo archive”. It houses all these images taken starting in 1977 and the assets came along with the sale to Disney. It is owned by LFL / Disney and is available to most of the LFL employees. These photos typically are NOT available to the public but may be viewed, if you know the right person to ask.

Part of my journey as the SLD-DL was to build relationships with folks at LFL over the years. As such, I’ve been able to request and review reference material from time to time (including the photo archive). It’s been enormously helpful, as you can imagine in answering some of these questions like the one you’re all struggling with. Especially older costumes that haven’t physically survived time and never were displayed at museum events and the like.

So how does the IOC gain access to such reference material when they have a bugaboo like this? My first suggestion is to NOT start tweeting about it or even inferring you’re entitled to know. This takes a soft hand, a diplomatic approach and a humble attitude when you find the right people to ask. Remember, they (at LFL) all have signed NDAs and sharing this type of intel isn’t always the smartest career move. Your DL should be looking for these inroads (if he hasn’t already) and trying to build bridges. Most LMOs have made some of these connection or know other folks in 501st leadership that can help. Christ, I had the legion set me up for a 1.5 hour interview with Brian Muir last week! They can move mountains for you - when you are humble and collaborate. However they aren’t “required” to do more for the detachment than they already have.

    Maybe try a softer approach.

  8. For the record, it’s still an unnecessary condescending comment that should have had some thought out into it.

It was more of a inside joke actually (not that you’re really concerned about context) but sure. If you want to be hurt by white noise, that’s your prerogative. Feel free to poke fun at sith all you want. I’ve heard “Emo-Ren” more times than I can count and haven’t been offended about it even once.

Don’t take Star Wars too seriously.
    Most fans don’t.

  9. I am encouraged that the detachment leader that refers to imperial officers as janitors has joined in on a debate about this costume.

The person you just replied to had a new first of a kind costume cleared by the legion and this LMO team here.  And he is citing their rulebook in the creation of said costumes.  In particular, he is citing, what would allow them to move forward with this costume and not reject it.    I am sure that Eric and Kris can speak for themselves on these decisions and why one thing happened with some costumes and not with others.  This is a pretty well researched costume if you look through it and the person who has commented on it the most is Kris Kobus, one of the two head LMOs.  Which is interesting when the one main concern is said there was no LMO involvement through the lifecycle of its creation.

My call for transparency is based on CRL development happening behind closed doors for two years now under Kris's stewardship.  That changed under my administration and if I do my job right will stay open long after I leave.  Members of this body have appreciated that.

I am glad that you were able to help Eric out when you had your tour.  But he has come here before and openly admitted to deferring to Kris and others with decisions on how things were put together.  That was where the comment about not knowing what a princess seam came from, his own admission once.  I know the excellence purported by the Sith Lord Detachment.  No one here challenges how you handle things unless they are members there.  I am sure that these LMO officers can answer the questions that are being put forth to them.  They are simple direct and should not be difficult to answer.

ALL elected members serve their membership.  It is my duty to serve mine and advocate their interests.  If if members think their interests are not being served, they have the ability to support the candidacy of someone else.  That goes for you, me and the LMO.

We appreciate your contribution in the spirit it was given.

For the record I think that reference was for crew, not officers.

  10. Hi, bargain basement SWAT team Lt. Sunber here.

For what it's worth, under the "Character Approval" in the "CRL and New Costume Survival Guide", it states:

Ideally, clear full body front/back/side reference should be available, but can be examined on a case by case basis.
    • The way it's written, it sure sounds like some leeways can be given. A full back reference is not required as some have stated on this thread.
    • Legion costumes have had a track record of getting updated over the years as more reference materials emerge.
    • A "complete ensemble" costume and CRL has been developed closely following available reference images.
Just my two cents - when there are conflicting opinions I like to draw people back to the original text (to take feelings and assumptions out of the equation).

I won’t speak for the LMO team but I do have my own experience which might shed light on why that verbiage was used. When I was mid-stream trying to create a Bossk this issue came up. We had zero reference for the back of his costume and since it had many modifications to an original Windak high altitude suit (especially in the back) it was quite the conundrum. I worked with the DL, GML and the LMO on presenting all the available reference material I could, paired with toys and animation reference to help build my case for approving the costume. We all agreed that the “indirect reference” was enough to give it a pass and they did.
It wasn’t easy but we all had the same goal in mind. How to make it work but not just “guess”.

Eric happened to be one of the LMO’s I consulted with on this.

Now here’s where I dial it up to 11.

Disparaging LMO’s by questioning their competency with statements like “they may know a lot about armor but nothing about princess seams” infers a lot. It infers Eric knows nothing about officer costumes (which is totally untrue). Did any of you stone throwers know that when I had a chance to tour the LFL archives, Eric was the one who asked me to find out exactly which manufacturer they used for officer boots? It was a black hole of information at the time and it was the ONE thing he wanted me to dig into. It also infers that Kris is assigning the wrong people (or minimally inept people) to spearhead this effort. Bob’s call for “transparency” at least infers he doesn’t trust Kris to do his job well. I don’t see the LMO office insisting on that same level of transparency from this Detachment. Not a really fair double standard IMHO.

This is a social club. All of us have lives and jobs (mostly) outside of this organization. We don’t have any real world rights to act like entitled cry babies when we don’t get things our way. My two cents (and vast experience here) is that instead of using a bully pulpit to affect an outcome you would do better spending that energy on trying to find reasonable reference (in any form it takes) and trying to work with the LMOs.

You’ll get more flies with honey than princess seams.

    My 2 cents.
