  1. I can only speak to the "classic" Jack Boots you listed from sovietboots, because I am currently wearing the only pair of Russian 49's they've had in stock!

The "pebbled" texture on the shaft is actually an artifact of the weave in the "Kirza" (or Kersey) material they are largely made of - the only actual leather is on the heel and the backstrap.

I had to have about 1" trimmed off the top of the shaft by a cobbler due to them being too tight at my calf muscle to pull up properly - an added bonus was that this brought them down to "mid-calf" height (he even sewed the pulls back in).

This was because they are a Soviet officer boot, with their height falling somewhere between jack boot height and knee high officer boots - but this does mean there is trimmable material to bring it to exact mid-calf height for the wearer.

However, if you have 'normal-sized' feet, there are many much better options out there (the links above look great!  If only my feet were a few sizes smaller...). I only bought the Kirza's because they are so much of an improvement on the Funtasma captains boots I was approved in almost 2 years ago.

  2. Mine's custom made, and had to be double interfaced for strength (because of my melon head).  Mine can never be washed - it would be like machine washing a business suit (and the dry cleaner won't touch it).

I give mine a damp cloth occasionally, to remove any marks, and a light febreezing every couple of troops for freshness.

I guess it all depends on what your hat is made of - I would expect a commercial product to have laundry care tag sewn in somewhere.  Otherwise check with the person who made it for you.

  3. They can be polyurethane rubber, as long as they give the appearance of leather - you only have to worry about base materials if you're looking at higher approval levels, for simple L1 approval, fake leather is fine.

The Funtasma zip-up things I wear as jackboots are poly rubber - they're not ideal, but they've gotten the job done for almost a year! (Although I'm retiring them soon, - I hope).

A few Redbacks wear 'dublins' (pretty much what's in your photo, I think studio 49 has them for his Vader), and they were approved in them - so as long as they fit your feet, and reach your knees, they should be good - just be aware that they don't breathe or stretch like leather, so they'll get a little uncomfortable and sweaty at a long troop (like ozcomicon or one of the supanovas).

Like I said, just check with Phantom, it's his call, but they look fine.

  4. In my eternal quest to find boots for my size 15.5 feet (15 months and counting), I have finally decided to get off the pot.

Of the makers I've found - the only one under 1k is R.M. Williams (Aussie icon level brand!) With their "Wellington" 'Polocrosse' boots (still very expensive - but less than a clothears suit, rather than more!)

The off the shelf version only goes to 12 in 'chestnut' but made to measure can be made in black (I've spoken to them).  I actually found what must've been a rejected custom pair of these boots in an R.M. Williams outlet store.  The fact that they were only size 8.5 was made worse by the fact they were $100 aud (adding insult to injury).

These looked matte, but I'd order a more dress shine on mine.

I realise these boots are definitely approvable, but with what they'll cost me I want to make sure they'll work to the highest levels - waaaaay too much to spend for basic approval.

    All opinions welcome.
