    So... this happened today....

Congrats to Michael for being the first approved and the CRL model.

    -Eric

And there was much rejoicing!  Finally - glad to see this come to light.  Eric/LMO is so good when it comes to this.  Michael, thanks for having the faith and sticking with it. You have the patience of Job (Sunday reference).

  2. All candidates:

    1. For new GML's it can be hard to learn the ins and outs of the costumes.  Do you have thoughts on what a strategy would look like to help new GMLs or existing GMLs not familiar with the costumes get up to speed quickly?

    2. For existing GMLs (yup, another years in the harness it looks like for me), given the explosiveness of new costumes that have come and are coming, what are you thoughts for keeping us informed of CRL changes?   Yes, I may be on IOC a lot because I'm the webmaster, but the truth is there is no way I can keep on top of all the new costumes in the detachments, and neither can any GML, so in this case I'm speaking for most GMLs who don't come here much.

    3. Let's say it's 2018 and your term is up. Looking back, how will you measure the success of your year?

  3. Questions for Robert Baker:

So in theory the other candidates could also simply change platforms if they won, so how is that a differentiator for you and are you stuck on that idea?  I'm trying to understand the exact problem that can't be solved with the current platform, as it has a wiki component and all the permissioning you want already.

Secondly, the reason the CRL's have taken so long to get through is that the current DL, BJ, got swamped with real life job duties and it's the DL who has final say in the CRLs before they can go to the LMO.  So, the issue would seem to lie with BJ being caught up with other stuff and not delegating it off.

What I want to know is seeing that CRLs were stuck, what actions did you take in the past year to help unstick them, e.g. did you volunteer to help out at all?

For Robert: I am failing to see how adding two more online forums (Facebook and a wiki) will simplify how we do things. Can you explain your plan for moderation, cross information between forums and updating of the information. Will one person have to handle all this or will it be up to multiple people? I would also like to know how this would help those who do not use social media.

To rif on this question, considering that Facebook is not available in several countries the Legion is in, how would you address the needs of those users?  You will also need to have 3 layers of security, as there are 3 layers of forum access, or more if you include staff.

The fact that Facebook is not accessible by all Legion members would - unless I'm missing something - prevent it's use for the purpose you suggest.  Or am I missing something?

Sorry, but it's not clear to me how a closed FB group solves the issue of CRL's not getting completed.  For instance how would it solve pictures not being submitted?  How would it solve faster approval via the LMO team?

  5. Personally I think you look GREAT!  Considering that elections are in progress, there will be no decision made until after the 16th when they close, as everyone is focused on that now and who knows who the next DL & LMO will be, especially considering that IOC has multiple people running for DL's.

I hate to say this as I know it's frustrating to wait, but I'd advise a little patience.  What can you do until then?

    1. Ensure the wording is ready to go.

    2. Ensure that photos of each item in high resolution against a neutral background are ready go to.

The more you can make this "shovel ready" for the new DL & LMO, the faster it will go.

    Does that make sense?

BTW, did I mention you look GREAT!

  6. The reality is that it has to be driven by the DL.  Maybe spam BJ's inbox, but he or his designee has to take this to the LMO.  Also too, you need pictures in ASAP.  You can get the text in, but then it will need LMO review until you get all the pictures squared away and the GML's can do local approvals.

Lastly, you need one exemplar (person) to be submitted as the CRL model.

But mainly, it's in BJ's court now, the CRL is way ahead of where it could be and should be a good basis point.

  7. To be clear, Cassian's costume is just a line officer.  The rank badge may be different from the style used in ANH, but that is all.  It's not like aside from his face it is unique.

WRT to ranks this has come up many times.  All we can really say is that more tiles = higher rank.  Blue seems higher than red, and orange is in the middle.

Other than that, they just put on screen what looks good.

  8. From what I can see, there are two items:

    1. Black rain coat in the same pattern (or highly similar) as Krennic wore, by the line (olive) officers in the rain scene.

    2. Olive officer's trench coat on Jeddha that Wombat posted.

Those would be canon options, however nothing says you can't replicate a WWII pattern for conventions, etc. that are non-canon.

Unless I'm totally blind, that is. :)

While the boots are different, requiring the "correct" ones won't be at level 1. So your boots are most likely fine.

His boots in question are WW2 German Officer Marching Boots - of which we have found one maker.

Belt is a standard belt with a ridge on either side - again, standard belt will work for level 1, we have never required the ridges or exposed edges for level 1, and I don't see BJ making a special exception for this one costume. We believe the greeble is different, but I'm not on board with that until the VD, because it could have simply been a lighting decoy.

Gloves, as we said earlier - the ones I have seem to be fine for now, probably going to have to get someone like IB or WW to start making them before we require screen accurate ones, because they don't seem to exist.

Sorry if I missed it, what's the source for the boots?

Thinking a bit more about this since I could possibly pull off a Krennic as a 3rd costume.  I'm about the right age with the right eye and hair color (albeit a bit more 'follicle' challenged!).  Reading through this thread, if I'm starting from my current Imperator level Staff Officer, this is what appears to need changing:

    • Tunic - white but otherwise same style and material as current tunic
    • Cape - obviously!
    • Gloves - new gloves vs. current officer gloves
    • Rank bar - new vs. current commander bar
    • Gun + Holster - new vs. current officer weapon
    • Pants, boots, code cylinders, belt same as currently worn, no changes needed

I realize the CRL doesn't exist yet but am I off the mark here, would I need more changes than what I'm thinking?

The tunic is different.  The ISB tunic has no pockets for code cylinders, Krennic has the pockets.  Or, did you mean compared to the ANH black tunic?  If so then yeah it's just like the ANH tunic but in white.  Question for those that saw the tunic in person - is it white or off white?  I ask in that lighting can change everything.  My ISB tunic is a cream color but as you can see from my avatar looks white in photos.

I'm thinking current ID gloves will be OK for L1, but not for L3.

Hat has a different disk for L2/L3.

Thanks - this is really clear.  I'll work with BJ to see if we can get all the CRL's updated to reflect this.

  12. Hey everyone – I think it’s time to step back and clarify a few things. I don’t see this as a debate, just a discussion, as we are all on the same side.  If it’s not clear, I’m actually pro-accuracy and I think my track record working with CRLs in this detachment stands on its own.  Anyone who remembers how the CRLs looked before BJ & I re-wrote them wholesale knows what I mean.

However what I do want to ensure is that there is a logical process applied.  It’s highly inefficient to not have standard language and components on CRLs, as everyone has ideas but putting the time in to keep them all consistent is not practical.  Secondly, the vision from BJ who has been the DL for many a year since these were last rewritten was to ensure that common items like boots, rank bars, etc. are consistent in accuracy levels across all IOC costumes.

A case in point is code cylinders/dosimeters.  There is a staff discussion to no longer allow chalk holders for them. At the time the CRLs were last written getting accurate code cylinders was hard or expensive or both.  Allowing modified chalk holders was a good solution until better items became more widely available.  Now is the time to make that move, but we need to ensure we are able to communicate this out effectively.  One needs a plan such as:

    1. Write up what the new standard is.

    2. Show a comparison between the old and new, and where the old is deficient.

    3. Get the proposal passed by DL/LMO

    4. Publish out to the GMLs in the Legion what the change is

It’s not effective change management to simply declare a change and fumble through the rollout.  When we made the change to have only accurate x-wing tools for crewman costumes, there was a lot of work behind the scenes to map this all out, and then we – that is me – had to run through every CRL to clean things up.

So with rank bars, the logic makes sense to up the accuracy at this point in time based on what I’m reading, but what is missing is a clear summary of 1) what the problem is with the current standard 2) what the solution is 3) impact on current/future members and 4) clear language that will accompany the CRLs.

A picture is worth 1000 words and having side by side pictures with notes can remove much of the confusion and uncertainty of what people describe, as it’s not practical to assume that every GML who will read the change understands the terms, vendors, etc.  Or even rank and file 501st members.

Krennic for sure is a “face” character just like Tarkin is, so you are right in that regard.  However the standards for Krennic should be in line for what we use with Tarkin, Daala, and other face characters in the detachment is all.

If I seem to harp on these points, it’s because I’m looking at it from the point of view of a GML who may not visit the detachment often.  Also, I’d like to ask no private PM’s.  IF there is a good visual showing the difference between the current low standard rank bars and the correct ones, just post it for all to see, as well at least one or two easy to access vendors.  If it looks good, we can make this change across *all* IOC CRLs, which is a better way to go about it.

  13. Cassandra, there is no right or wrong in my post, just observations.

    * EU/Asia garrisons tend to have higher accuracy standards that US garrisons

    * People doing secondary costumes tend not to spend as much as they do their primary costumes

    * People who troop less tend not to spend as much money and time on their costumes compared to those who troop a lot

You can argue the why's and wherefore's all you want, but my data points I believe are correct.  I'm not making any judgment statements here, so my apologies if you interpreted it that way.

Here's the thing - I actually agree with your opinion.  It raises my hackles that my rank bars aren't perfect, nor my boots, or that my cloak material is apparently a tiny bit lighter weight than the movie cloak, or that my gloves aren't 100% right.  These are all things I want to fix, not for L2/L3 acceptance, but because I am THAT invested in this character.

That being said, as I said somewhere else, demanding my perfectionists view for everyone isn't what the Legion is about.  At least not anymore.  I have no issues with L2 requiring Push buttons, and L3 requiring exact spacing (I know someone seems to have figured it out, but I'm sure when the VD comes out we'll have it exactly).  But I go back to the boots - it'd be like requiring ONLY English Riding Boots for Tarkin.

I do appreciate your opinion though - my heart tells me you're correct, but my head says no.

Actually that's not quite right.  The Legion has ever been about as accurate as we can get, spare no expense.  AP suits were available back in 2005 when I started, but it took years and years for the Legion to get to where the FX helmet was not allowable, and the FX suit was not allowable unless modifications were made.

We have known for a very long time that Tupperware back packs were not accurate either, but it was only until more accurate parts became easily obtainable that the CRL standards were updated to reflect them for the sandtrooper.

As someone who has written and re-written dozens of CRL entries over 10 years across 3 different detachments, I realize that we can't please everyone with the process.  I also realize that some garrisons really want to push the accuracy bar, and others resist every step of the way, but the reality is that we are a worldwide group and some things just take time to achieve.

You may think we don't go far enough, others think we push it too far.  We have to find a common ground that works for everyone, whether they are the super trooper who does dozens of troops a year and will spend top dollar on their kit, and also the person who just wants a good-enough backup costume.

Lastly, prop replication != screen accuracy.  Especially in the OT. Else we'd have to support all manner of costume flubs, which I don't think anyone wants to do (unless they are on RPF :) ).

In the end, detachments simply make recommendations.  The final call will be at the DL/LMO level.

  15. You are missing the point Kris.  This is not unique costume like a Vader, Boba Fett, etc. where your logic may make sense.  No one is saying it "should be cheap", but having standards for these types of characters that are unusually expensive isn't what the 501st is about either.

Else we wouldn't have L1/L2/L3 standards, and every Legion TK would have to meet Centurion.
