There are some books that so far I have used and try they are pretty good. Even do it is more on female fashion but they are pretty useful if you want to try out as some of the design on the outfits do come from some female patterning. Mccall pattern or simplicity pattern they are pretty good. But I find that I do not find them helpful as the details on how to make it for starters can be pretty hard.

But if you do want to get some fashion pattern to mod from, this are the links. But do not buy them at the full price! Wait! They have random sales for the patterns at $2.99USD at times!! So do check the website on and off for the discounts
    https://mccallpattern.mccall.com
    https://kwiksew.mccall.com/
    https://butterick.mccall.com/

Simplicity Pattern website https://www.simplicity.com/ do not have discount like the Mccall band. So you may have to use stores like http://sewingpatterns.com/ to get simplicity patterns when they go on sales. But take note that they can be really slow in their shipping.

    For Officer Trenchcoat
You can mod it from this pattern https://kwiksew.mccall.com/k4017

    For Imperial Crew's Flightsuits
Alot of moding to do but this gives a good base pattern

    For Jodhpurs Pants

Patternmaking for Fashion Design by Helen Joseph Armstrong  (Author)

This book is very good. As it does cover all kinds. And this is pretty much like a school text book kind. But for man pattern there is not really much. But they do show like princess cut which you do see in Frist order officer. This book do not come with pull out patterns. But if you get this book, you will not really have to get any other book which is a text book kind.

Japanese Craft Book ~ Magazine pattern School Vol.1
    https://www.amazon.com/Japanese-Magazine-Compilation-Publishing-JAPANESE/dp/4579073428/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1492869764&sr=1-1
This book I will said it is a lifesaver as for the price you pay for the book, they give from all size 5, 7, 8 to size 21. Only a block pattern of the front and back and sleeve. Like I did said, that all this books I posting are more on for female but with abit of editing, it can fit all male and female. This book mostly show you on how to mod your pattern. I can't read japanese but they have clear picture inside the book on how to do and stuff.

This one have pants pattern pull out. it gives base a pattern pants.  Same series as the other japanese book. In the book it do shows how to make pattern like tight pants and etc.

This book have S, M, L, XL size. But they have a pattern which is for Officer Trenchcoat (Like Frist Order or the Rogue one movie) still have to mod the pattern here and there..
    https://singapore.kinokuniya.com/bw/9784579112203

Take Note that The Japanese books pattern sizing is more for Asia people.

I find that some of the japanese books are better for money as they do have alot of pull out pattern even. And For japanese books, you can find more male pattern books. Like said, do not have to worry about not knowing how to read japanese, they give a good clear picture on how to do it.

You can Ebay some of this japanese books if they are not on amazon.

You can do is to use a base pattern for the pants to do Frist Order pants or the Jodhpurs pants. And add the sides on what you want to do it.

Oof! Went for some dinner and came back to a bunch of posts!

If we limit a very popular and widely known costume in this fashion via rank bar, when content outside of the 3 OT movies exists, it just doesn't seem to have much in the way of grounds to do so.

Legends Thrawn exists, and remains, despite being "non canon" and never appearing in the OT movies.
Ysanne Isard exists as a popular character in the comics, and while there is debate over her rank bars and the style/cut of her pants, she never appears either and yet I see more and more Ysanne builds popping up as time goes on. Not a sniff of her in the OT movies.

It's an extremely blinkered and strange view to tie down a detail like this, on the grounds of "OT only", and yet entire character CRL's exist for non OT, or non moviecanon characters. At least I think so anyway!

Like, we don't even need to use "logical extrapolation" as reasoning behind double bar rank plaques on black uniforms. They exist in both the videogames and the comics. If the "three references" litmus test applies, pretty sure we've got that covered here?

And sure if someone wanted to specifically make an OT Staff Officer, they are perfectly within their rights to limit themselves to a single bar plaque!

There are existing live full CRL's for characters who exist and have visual references in video game and comic form. Non-canon/post-disney video games and comic form, at that.

It's an all or nothing scenario in my opinion. If for some insane reason we keep "the generics" to OT only for the sake of whatever reason, I hope in the name of fairness that we retcon all of the non movie CRL's. Bye Legends CRL's! Most of, if not all of Flagship Eclipse? Gone.

Its hyperbolic I suppose but getting nitty-gritty and fiddly with for example the Staff and Line uniforms, the most widely worn and recognised of all IOC costumes I'd be willing to say, just seems like needlessly making one of the most popular and desirable costumes more tricky than it needs to be.

Fans and costumers will be exposed to characters and costume designs through all sorts of mediums. It seems fair that each of these mediums be admissible when it comes to the minutiae of a CRL. There are other detachments permitting "concept art" and "prototype design" costumes! I'm not saying that we allow every single outside source with a Star Wars licence to influence CRLs, lets not have any Thrawns with Admiral bars because the Lego set got it wrong (Still super mad about that..). But solid, world building canon (both pre and post Disney) should be admissible.

I greatly approve of the way that the Krennic CRL is set up, with separate configurations for different appearances and times in Rogue One. I didn't think I'd like it at first at all. Thought that the raincoat config should have its own CRL. But no, it works and with the addition of Commander Krennic config, it proves that it is entirely possible. We can't have a separate CRL for everyone who appears within the Star Wars universe. It's just a logistical nightmare. BUT there is nothing to specify that you can't have "X movie configuration" for a costume, with specifics for THAT one movie, should things change slightly. I say slightly, because for the IOC and the nature of our character costumes, changes are only ever really vary slighty from character to character (specifications can be made within configurations for physical appearance and possible accessory or rank changes) or from scene to scene. It's why the optional section exists, in case someone wanted to be that one guy from the one scene in the corridor with belt boxes, etc.

Ultimately it comes down to the original generic line and staff officer CRL's being an amalgamation of BOTH of the following:

-- Generic CRL meant to cover all source (Movie, game, eu, etc) references for staff and line officers, so that 30 different CRL's based upon provenance aren't required --- AND ---
-- CRL only based on movie source (canon vs non canon and varying peoples changing definition thereof)

It isn't a smooth mixture, and one that happened (with the best of intentions) over time.

In this specific instance, if one takes into account all of the EU/Legends/Movie/Game/ etc material and say that those references are OK, then double-bar black officers are OK, too.  If, however, you only look at the OT movies and require screen accuracy of those, then double-bar black officer would not be OK.

The solution is not to patchwork things. That is, sure, one could attempt to address the internal conflict within the CRL itself by a quick edit and hand-waving.  It does not, however, help create a methodology behind CRL's for the IOC to be able to move forward on.  That is something I will be opening up a discussion on soonish ... as I am mutli-tasking at work at present.

GDMorti reacted to Paggeldiwwer in General Pattern for an officers' tunic
    Hello fellow officers.

more than two years ago, when I became a member here, I noticed (as many before and after me) that it is hard to find a pattern here for the tunic.

I have sewed a few of those tunics since then (as an amateur - it's just a hobby ) and I just made a small photo-documentation of my recent progress.

I photographed the single pieces from which the tunic will be constructed and drawed in the measurements of them. I hope this will help some of you to create an own pattern for your tunic. And even if you haven never seriously sewed before (like me more than two years ago) - just do it, give it a try. You'll like it - believe me It is such a great feeling seeing the progress of your own project. And you do not need to work it out by hook or by crook - take yourselves the time you need. This includes re-opening of some seams sometimes. But you'll to this for the better.

The pattern is designed for my father, so it is customized. That means the single parts are made to meet his measurement - not yours. You will need to alter them to make the tunic fit your own body.

My fathers measurements are: 176 cm tall, weight 76kg, chest is 108cm waist is 110cm, back from neck to hip: 42cm, arm length: 62 cm, neck-circumference: 42cm.

Please alway keep in mind, that we need about 10-15mm of seam-allowance at each and every edge of the fabric. Before you sew all of that together, it appears a lot larger of course

    How to start:

Draw on the pattern-parts and cut them out of the fabric:

I did try gray color on the early stage. It did not work out as what the design was when I was watching the movie again.
Just to show you how it looks like if it was gray color (The top). Base on the research that me and some of the people from IOC.
For the Top Mint color fabric:
    I got from this store
Spotlight - Premium Cotton Sateen Fern

you can kind of see the different with both of the color.

The question on how I wear the top part, I did a collar on kind so I can fit inside. In the early stage, I did try to sew all up in one go, but my head just can not fit inside the collar . so I did like this.

This is how it looks like over all. After I redo and show the right olive color.

Here are some of the pattern (will try to add more soon) and picture of the build for Line/Staff/Krennic Poncho

    Take note that

    1) Krennic's Cape is much longer then the Line/Staff officer's cape

    2) Krennic front have a pocket. But the Line/Staff officer do not have.

The patterning is pretty easy it is just the sewing the detail of the line can be hard. So do change the needle on the sew machine if you are planing to do it yourself. Using the normal needle can sometime cost the sting to jump a few sticting. Do be careful when sewing waterproof fabric as once you poke a hole, the hole stays.

    Needle: Microtex

The cape is more of a rectangle shape. So cut two of this. And if you have a mannequin, it will be better. so you can pin the cape to the top part nicely.

It will be better to pin and see where you want the below part to be.

This is my test mock up on krennic's pocket. I think it is called a Welt Pocket.
Here are some of the links on how to do it
    http://www.thebusybean.com/2012/07/how-to-welt-pocket-with-exposed-zipper/
    https://oliverands.com/community/blog/2013/10/tutorial-how-to-sew-a-welt-pocket.html

The Opening of the top cape
ok this is how I did it.

ok. You can see the different in the cape length of it.

If you really want to be more waterproof (not for heavy rain), you can try to spray waterproof spray onto the costume (or for your daily wear too!). But every how and then you have to spray it. Because the waterproof spray do not stay onto the outfit very long. It is really usefull for hats! I did use some of the waterproof spray when I go oversea on my hat or my jacket when there is light rain like England.....

    It looks something like this.

I think that's one of the biggest peeves with the CRL, the wording and language were off, misleading, confusing. It's SO MUCH clearer now, sizes in approximations, a lot of the unknown "exacts" are gone. Definitely a change for the better, this one. <3

I noticed that it appears Krennic has been completely updated, including not just his raincoat configuration, but Commander. Which is great!
I'm a bit concerned that it wasn't announced on this thread? I honestly struggle to keep up with all the various areas that CRL's and their respective updates are tracked on this forum... I mean, yay that it was updated? I can finally start my build soon! But I have reply notifications turned on for -this- thread, and all the discussion I believe went on in here, it would have been cool to get a quick "it's live!" notification.

Not that I don't appreciate the update!
Would it be possible to get a "here's what changed" sort of "patch-notes" for the CRL? It'd be nice to see what this thread achieved! Along with the obvious two new configs.

I am not aware that all the discussion concerning it happened in this thread, but will trust you on that if you say it did

As for a changelog for this specific CRL, I can tell you that it got a language overhaul that did not change most of the substance, per se`, but made the intent clearer (hopefully), particularly around the cape specs.  Modesty panel acceptable but no longer required.  What and exactly how many fasteners people use to fasten the cape to the shoulders  is no longer specified.   The belt may hang, but isn't required to hang.  Exactly how many panels or sections the cape has is no longer specified/required.  Those are the big things I remember off the top of my head, outside of the accessory and flashback additions.

So Krennic is next on my Hitlist. I made a version last year for Rogue One's launch but tbh it's pretty sub-par, nowhere near good enough for submission. So! I'm poking my nose in here since I want to build a costume soon, but dont want the CRL to change into something weird that I disagree with in terms of accuracy but would render my build technically unclearable. I'm gonna chip in on a few points people have discussed since I honestly think a TON of good work has been done here and I initially looked at a six page amendment thread with a lot of anxiety, but you guys all seem to be picking up on a load of things I had issue with (mostly wording issues, sizing/scaling issues) and a few I'd not even noticed but agree with fully!

Aight here I go (this is really wordy but I'm trying to summarise 6 pages so bear with):

    - SCALING ISSUES. Specifying X should be Ycm or inches tall is a real struggle. Yes you can stipulate that GML's "should know what they're doing" and should be able to advise this, or clear someone with an "incorrectly sized" costume component, judging by scale and how it looks/sits on the costumer. But a costumer, especially someone who isnt' super savvy with the clearance process, hasn't worked with GML's before, and DOUBLE ESPECIALLY if they are not making their costume and have it commissioned, will not necessarily know this. Or they may not feel comfortable with scaling it so that it looks/sits/feels right, as it would be "breaking from the CRL". Also a GML might not catch this in time if a costumer commissions or makes it, and doesn't post a billion tiny updates in a WIP thread etc. If a CRL says something -specifically-, it's going to cause issues like this. And GML's, LMO's, armourers, advisors, friends etc all saying "oh just scale it, the CRL just says be specific for [whatever reason]" calls into question the point of a CRL? This is specified but just ignore it if it doesnt apply to you? The suggestion of a percentage I read about, is a good idea, but what about a reference to where the costume part should reach on a person? Nobody will have the same size neck, but surely we can all agree that everyone -has- a neck. "Collar should reach just under/half-way up the neck" or something like that, is a fairly solid guideline? Anyone judging the costume, savvy or not with the character, can check the CRL, check the reference photos, and then judge the costumer accordingly. A costumer can supply their neck measurements to a seamstress, and specify "halfway up" or whatever, and a good seamstress can do the rest. AND then a GML has a solid point of reference on the CRL that nobody can debate, if a collar is too high, etc. "It says halfway but yours is at your jawline, mate".. etc.

    - Closures/fastenings - Specifying a type of closure = no. Specifying the number of closures = no. Specifying how the cape is attached = no. Specifying HOW the tunic should look when worn (no visible closures, should lie smooth and flat against the front of the wearer, etc etc) = yes. Specifying how the cape should hang and lie against the shoulders of the wearer = yes. How people go about this is entirely up to them. If it looks the part, GML's can clear. If the costumer finds out later that their chosen fastenings etc don't functionally work because someone stands on their cape or the wind pulls it off, thats up to them to sort out sadly. People can discuss the methods they used, how they look AND how they function as part of WIP builds, and people can use whichever they like, but its not really the CRL's place to specify. UNLESS screen-used costume knowledge is in play. In which case, I demand a full spec and how-to, lmao! If a submission has used two earth magnets for their cape or 20 plastic buttons. 4 metal snaps for their tunic or 12 plastic ones. Who cares, if their submission pics look the biz!

SIDENOTE: I forget if this was mentioned, but since there is documented proof of FOUR hook eye closures for the collar, why is this not specified, if not a higher level clearance? We can see -and- count those, AND have a good idea exactly what they are (my money is on white hook and eye closures, like bra closures) so include them! (Also a modesty panel would not cover the closures HOWEVER would cover the throat/skin beneath. I'm entirely undecided on whether or not this exists so am willing to leave this to better persons than I to debate/decide, or happy to leave this optional. "...can include a modesty panel" etc.)

    - WORDING ISSUES. This CRL doesn't know which way it's coming or going in places. It's been pointed out several times that it states one thing, and then goes on to contradict itself. PLEASE sort this out! Figuring out a basis for scaling will help a -lot- here. As well as scaling contradictions, the boots were brought up. While I agree entirely with "keeping them free of additional decoration" etc. to avoid people getting incorrect boots through via a loophole... Where is the harm in adding a line "unless the boot has adjustable calf strap, see level 3 below" (with better wording obv). While yes you'd like to think most people will have the common sense to read that part, and then know if they've found a holy grail level 3 clearance boot, therefore NOT chopping that part off.... you can never be sure.

    - "The Great Cape Discourse". This one was giving me The Fear. My first draft at a cape was entirely off my own back (lol) with no pattern short of the figures and my own flailing incompetence. I'm not a professional, by any stretch. It was... ok? But not a pretty picture, and I'm going to start from scratch again for Krennic V3. The wording for the cape on the CRL is a bit of a disaster. It's confusing and really vague, which is not great when it's a super specific and statement piece of the costume. You think "Krennic", you think "cape". Meg's work in this thread was -amazing- and I'm kind of bummed that photobucket has eaten those two photos of her mockup. I'm entirely confident that this can all be re-worded in order for it to make sense, and to include, where necessary, relevant accurate sewing terms for all the fruity areas. I'm not one to want CRL's to get too technical, but to be honest if you're looking to tackle Krennic and you either don't know some technical terms or aren't willing to google them and learn? It's probably too complicated a costume for you to make yourself? I also cant wait to see Mike's amended diagrams, if they're still pending? (Might have missed them.) His Krennic in person is phenomenal and I have to resist getting my hands all over that cape. I just have many Cape Feelings you guys. <3 I don't think I can bring anything more to the table that hasn't been covered, BUT I dont see anything i necessarily disagree with? OH! Except that the rear split should start at the bottom of the butt (lol). I am fully team #belowthebutt. Looking at the footage of Krennic striding through the sea in the teaser (why wasnt this shot in the movie?!) is obvious that it's higher than his knee, but not any higher than his ass. A modest length to avoid showing ass. As for the seam at the shoulder... I entirely accept that many capes were used so who knows whats going on there, and which screenshots/photos are the best examples. I propose either a seamline -OR- a line of topstitching be approvable, WITH THE PROVISO that the cape sits and fits correctly. A bit like the closures, let people do what they want, so long as a line of -something- is there, and it doesnt affect the cape visually in a negative way. A lot of this stuff is common sense, unless we -know- something is constructed a certain way, we have to guess. I see absolutely no harm in either seam/topstitching so long as it doesnt fudge the cut of the cape.

    - Raincoat Krennic - I'd personally like this to be a separate CRL? It's such a massive piece of work that I feel it should be recognised as its own costume change? You're losing the tunic, the cape. Gaining a fully bespoke new tunic made of an entirely different material with integrated cape of a whole new design. Plus a hat with its own specs. He never wears hat without the raincoat I don't think? So making raincoat&hat an optional extra but exclusive to each other looks like a massive faff. Just do another CRL. XD Most of the work is done, but you get plenty of room to wax lyrical about the raincoat, plus you can specify a hat as a non-optional accessory. (I also think that this thread is bogged down enough as it is without discussing Raincoat Krennic, ergo new CRL so we can do another CRL thread if necessary!)

    - Code Cylinders - can I ask why modified chalk holders are not acceptable? Tarkin and Line Officer (Olive) CRL's permit them, however Krennic's require specifically replica or real dosimeters? Seems a bit harsh? A hard and fast rule for all those with code cylinders, either permit or deny across the board imo. Agree with brass clip as higher level.

    - Can I ask why, as a face character, "costumer facial appearance must match that of the character" has not been specified? Personally, I'm all for it NOT being specified! Who can honestly do anything about how their face looks? And the 501st, as far as I know, have never denied a costumer a face-character because "they dont look like the actor" or whatever. Attempts can be made to look -more like- the character. Age makeup or contouring to achieve a closer appearance. I only highlight this, because the Hux CRL states "Facial appearance must closely match General Hux..." which I think is a load of rubbish, and should be removed... As with code cylinders, either all face characters or not at all. And I personally prefer how Krennic's is written to not include this line, because it's redundant. (Tarkin's doesnt include such a wishywashy line either, but specifies hair and makeup requirements, which I agree with as key parts of Tarkin's "look". Level two specifying "looking like Kushing" is pretty ridiculous but thats a discussion for another time.. can you imagine that spec being put on all face characters' higher levels???)

Sorry for the wall of text! I'm going to be watching this one like a hawk and hoping that CRL amends can come through and be settled soon so I don't have to worry about it during my impending build. :S Wish me luck! <3

Holster if blaster is present makes sense. No blaster, no holster?
But the proposed edits are great overall! <3

Just chiming in for a couple things:

    1. To echo Tentayena's words up there somewhat... not only am I hella new to the 501st I'm also very new to the IOC and even NEWER to the Thrawn fandom and Rebels, so I completely missed the initial discussion around his CRL. But now I have all this ~passion~ to see him done justice, as he's rapidly become a favourite character. So yes, I missed the boat by a lot, and didn't weigh in the first time, but the fact that a fairly new-to-the-party fan such as myself could see so many issues with the CRL goes to show that there -were- issues there. It's not really like not voting and then complaining afterwards, because unlike a presidency, we're not locked into or stuck with the winner for four years. It's all subject to change, as proven!
    2. Despite the uh... volatile reception and resulting issues following the CRL release, I'd like to commend various LMO's for taking responsibility and for giving us all the chance to make it work. TRUE we might still get new Thrawn/Rebels fans, new IOC/501st members later on with -further- changes and issues, but as mentioned, CRL's are fluid and open to change so even then there might be changes. Which is great! The openness to change and go back to re-address the situation to ensure accuracy is a brilliant attitude and drives us all to be the best we can be.
    3. I agree with all of the proposed alterations mentioned above, so don't really have much to add other than "I second these things", but I consider my hat thrown into the ring. I look forward to the new draft CRL and to all of the resulting Thrawns who emerge after it goes live, after having been able to follow a CRL with (hopefully!) less controversy and concern over accuracy.

    Much love. <3
