My Krennics collection (now I have another one figure, but I must make a photo).
 

I grabbed a few photos of things I have and have collected down through the years.  
 
A cell of an animated Imperial officer from an episode of Ewoks in 1984.  Note that the hat has the same markings as we see in Rebels 30 years later.
 
a cell of Admiral Screed, imperial officer and bad guy in the Droid series in 1985.  
 
I have a collection of autographs of imperial officers including costume designer John Mollo.  This was the only autograph that a friend got me.  I wish we could have interviewed him while he was alive.  I have 4 from ANH, 3 from ESB, one from ROTJ and one from ROTS
 
I have some obscure toys related to officers.  This was only sold on Military PX's and was designed by a friend of mine John Ficker.  it is the conference room scene from ANH. I have every single hasbro 4 inch and 6" figure ever produced, including the ones that Kenner made in the 80s.
 
I have the officer maquettes made by Gentle Giant
 
and when I can I get the actors to sign them.
 
I also take photos of friends in costume, particularly officers, with backgrounds that fit the costume.  I have these hanging around my house.

Really, white cape/dress or other clothes are not reserved for Rebels

I've only worn my officer on a couple troops so far. All I've gotten with that is "what military do you represent? Oh! Star Wars! Right!"
 
But in my Guard costume, I usually just get "Red Guy" or "Vader." I'm always flabbergasted by being called Vader. Have these people paid any attention to pop culture? I did have one guy in his 40's run up to me once, though, and say "Imperial Guard! You were my favorite growing up!" and took a selfie with me.

I got called Space Force by a cop at DragonCon.

I got called Darth Vader at least 4 times today.

This has probably been discussed to exhaustion, but as someone newish here, and as a historical re-enactor, figured it was a fun topic.

I know the general theory is that Lucas modeled officers from both Second World War German uniforms and those from F - 451.
 
Interestingly though, the Imperial Officer tunic is nearly identical to the tunic worn by British and Commonwealth pilots of the First World War, was referred to as a "maternity tunic" due to its odd shoulder closure.
 
Some pictures of me in a modern reproduction of an Australian Flying Corps Lieutenant, wearing the above tunic.  Remove the Collar and Epaulets, and it should look VERY familiar   
 

Peter Cushing was interviewed once and referred to the uniforms looking like something an English chauffeur from the 1920s would wear.

This is bowl from era of the Galactic Empire in it's greatest time. You can see very simple ornament with imperial vessels and short inscription. This kind of pottery was very common on worlds where Empire was very welcome.
