So now that the 451 CRL is live, what's shaking on the Warrant Officer CRL?

Just checking in as I'm thinking of doing a RotJ (Warrant Officer?) since my black Cosplaysky uniform isn't 451-style and I just don't feel right wearing it as such with the ANH accessories.

If the uniform will not work for Rogue One, I have already purchased a second set of belt boxes for a ROTJ warrant officer.  I feel the same way about ANH accessories on mine now.

    Hello.

If someone could confirm for me in case I'm misreading.

I currently have an approved Staff Officer uniform.  Trying to be as movie accurate as possible, to be ANH Staff Officer, I'd need to get the new 451 style tunic and get silver clipped replica dosimeters instead of brass clipped.  Correct?

Second then, in the mean time, the deluxe Cosplaysky staff outfit would be for ESB or RotJ Officer's or Navy Troopers, correct?

I just wanted to confirm I understand the changes.  I know I'd be grandfathered in to the old CRL, but I don't want to tell folks I'm wearing a movie accurate costume (in my black Cosplaysky Deluxe Officer's Commander, Lt., or Ensign configuration uniform) knowing I'm wrong now as it's not a 451 tunic.

    Thanks

    Hi,

I am in the same predicament.  I have a CosplaySky tunic that falls into the old staff officer CRL that I passed off as a Level 1 or 2 ANH Staff Officer.  Now, that 'impression' is no longer valid, even though the old CRL references the uniform making an appearance in ANH.  Reviewing the film many times, I have only seen 451 tunics in ANH.  I have decided to change my impression to a Rogue One Staff Officer, buying the silver clip code cylinders and the no-cut-out hat greeblie.  If there are design differences in the Rogue One uniform, I have not seen them, as I only have the film to reference.

In the meantime, I am progressing towards a Navy Trooper, a TIE Fighter Pilot, and eventually a ANH Vader.  With the money it would cost to purchase a 451 uniform, I have already paid for the Trooper and the pilot.  I am a huge fan of the 451, but not a $1300 fan.

  3. I realize the IOC has gone around and around on the Imperial Staff Officer CRL, what should be added, what should be deleted, what should be changed.  I also realize that someone who has been in the Legion for all of five months is hardly the expert among us.  I do ask for your indulgence to consider this concept.

It is possible that we are trying to make the Staff Officer CRL do too many things.  I believe I read somewhere about a suggestion to separate out the different versions of the Staff Officer like the different versions of the Stormtrooper are done.  This would serve two functions - it would provide a simple, consistent guide for newcomers to build their uniforms, and it would give journeyman members a succinct and descriptive standard with no loose exceptions into what is permitted or not permitted.

Level differentiation will be restricted to achieving a higher level of film/media accuracy with the upgrading of components to the base uniform concept in the CRL version.  I believe striking a balance between accuracy and ease of completion is essential for the present and future of this particular uniform.

ANH Staff Officer.  Let the Fahrenheit-451 uniform have its due, with all of its problematic (expensive) pathways to completion.  I am the first to acknowledge that 99.9% of the public has no concept of its uniqueness, but plenty of us do.  Let it stand alone, and pray for the day when affordable versions of this uniforms are available.

ROTJ Staff Officer.  This is clearly the most achievable of the two Original Trilogy film versions for new applicants.  The CosplaySky tunic and jodphurs are just fine, if they use fabric a little thin for my tastes.  The only noticeable, unique characteristic is the addition of two more belt boxes (4 total) for the savings of not requiring a rank bar.  Easy.

Rogue One Staff Officer.  This is another, readily-accessible film version.  Aside from a few small details, it appears to be identical to the ROTJ uniform but with a rank bar. I only have a copy of the film as a reference to make that assessment and no other media.  It might be easy to simply consolidate the ROTJ and Rogue One officer builds, but I wonder if we would confuse newcomers.  The two basic elements of the uniform, the tunic and jodhpurs, appear to be identical in design.

Other Media Staff Officer.  This is another problematic version, for the simple reason that only diehard fans have seen them.  I have seen discussions about "non-standard" rank bars, but other than that, I don't know if there are any other contentious issues.  Unless there is a completely off-the-wall uniform out there, it might be best to incorporate it into one of the other CRLs.

Four (maybe three, or even two) versions of the uniform, and I think they can be accurately summarized into two or three CRL submissions.  In my opinion, there are too many differences between the ANH uniform and the others to remain combined, which I believe is the direction suggested by the IOC leadership.

I know this issue has been around for some time, and I don't know if I have suggested anything different from others.

Being  NY born and raised let me see if i can find an nypd jacket . What years are you talking about for the tunic. Hopefully I can be some help.

For the film-used jackets, I am thinking 60s or 70s, since ANH was filmed in '76.  The design of the tunic looks ancient, so it probably goes back to the 30s or earlier.  It would be nice if I knew how the original costume designers altered the police uniform, but I doubt any of that history was written down.

In the end, I will probably end up altering my CosplaySky tunic.  The only problem with it is that the fabric is not as thick as I would like.  In the enhanced photos from ANH, it looks like there is some bubbling between the body fabric and the concealment panels.  I would also bet money that the fabrics were different, also.

  5. I went online trying to track down the supplier for the NYPD dress uniform tunic.  No luck.  I could not find any used tunics for sale, either.  Short of contacting the NYPD, this could be tough, but it could be done.

For the ANH Dress Uniform Navy Trooper, to accurately replicate the screen-used uniform, one should sew a pair of topstitched panels onto the CosplaySky ISB (black) tunic to simulate the fabric panels concealing the button holes.  Will (should) this be included for the ANH Trooper uniform CRL?  Maybe for Level 3 only?

    Thoughts?

  6. A worse situation is someone ordering jackboots for a trooper or crewman costume from a WWII reenacting vendor.  The high-end boots usually come with hobnails.  If you walk on smooth concrete or tile in them without being careful, you will end up on your bottom.

  7. I use a CosplaySky uniform, also.  After hours of frustration at troops, I replaced my hooks with the same snaps I use for the tunic, with a modesty panel behind the collar pieces.  The only tricky part is placing the snaps in the right part of the modesty panel so that the collar comes together without a gap.

  8. While the topic of ANH staff officers/naval troopers etc. is being discussed, look at the Princess Leia interrogation scene and focus on the two naval troopers behind Darth Vader.  Examine the sequence when they enter and stand at either side of the entryway, and note the trooper to the right of Vader, especially his face.  Then, as the interrogation droid floats by, look at his face again.  Anyone see anything unusual?

The uniform detail discussions are forcing me to see things I never contemplated noticing before.  You have created an obsession, and I resent you for it!

  9. I am a huge fan of the staff officer uniform, and the 451 in particular.  I completely agree with the creation of a new CRL to illustrate its dramatic differences from the other (few) staff officer uniform examples in the films.

However, with the only ready-to-wear examples costing upwards of $1300, the number of ANH staff officers will be in the range of the number of Darth Vaders (probably less).  It would be nice if a good quality 451 pattern can be passed on to Cosplaysky for a low-cost uniform alternative, particularly for those using the staff officer uniform as an entry point to the 501st.

  10. Removing the gap between the collar pieces without the hook-eye closure is tricky.  I have a black fabric piece that holds the two snaps and acts as a modesty panel, along with the main modesty panel that conceals the skin around my throat.

The CRL states, "closed with two eye hooks", so I guess I am technically violating the CRL.  However, being able to close my collar by myself at a troop is very convenient.  Every uniform I have worn with a mandarin collar and hook and eye closures had a small modesty panel behind it for appearance and comfort.

On the Velcro issue, I don't see where there would be a problem if it wasn't visible.

  11. MazCave on Etsy makes a good hat, too.  It looks exactly like Commander Praji's hat in ANH.  He lives in Italy, so shipping might be more expensive outside of the EU.

If you examine the movies, almost all of the hats are a little different in shape, size, etc.

  12. For my Cosplaysky, I had the hook and eye closures removed and replaced by simple button snaps that were used on the snap closures for the tunic.  I always had a hard time getting the hooks closed by myself.  The new system is much easier.  You just need to be careful about how the two neck flaps line up when the collar is closed.

  13. My German engineer boots arrived from Sportsman's Guide, and I am very pleased.  They say they are 'used', but mine were in great shape.  They split the difference between the top of my foot and my knee, and looking at some scenes in ANH, look to be perfect for trooper or Tie pilot.  I ordered size 13D, and even with my narrow foot, they fit well with athletic socks.  They have a great, thick (not too thick) rubber sole, which will be very comfortable during a long troop on concrete.  The leather is relatively smooth on the 'shoe' portion, and the shafts are pebbled.

If you can get them in your size, I highly recommend them.

  14. In my experience, flyers have a lot less PTSD.  I wrote a master's degree thesis on the combat experience of flyers in my bomber unit, and almost none of them reported any symptoms.  Some of us felt remorse in dropping weapons on people, but it gradually evolved into a feeling of ecstasy, and "never feeling more alive" than when in combat.  Talking to non-combat vets about the subject can be uncomfortable.

Lt Col David Grossman wrote a book called "On Killing", which does a really good job of explaining what happens in the minds of combat veterans.  I highly recommend it.

  15. My Cosplaysky staff officer uniform was custom-made, and it fit well with no alterations.  I'm not sure if I was just lucky, but hey, I'd rather be lucky than good.

I have an issue with fabric leakage over the tops of my riding boots.  The stirrups that came with them are too loose to be effective.

Overall, I would say it was a great purchase.
