Tentayena got a reaction from rattleandburn in Why did you come to the 501st?
501st was pretty standard. I had made a Kylo Ren cosplay and took it to one of our bigger local cons. Ended up meeting a few members and they encouraged me to join since my costume was just about there. It then took me 4 months to actually join because my boots were lost in the void.

And I loved it, but Kylo is a bit of a beast to wear. And with my health not being the best, I started looking into costumes that would be a bit physically easier to wear. And since we had a few other Kylos in my garrison, I settled on Hux as my next build.

Found a lovely person to build it, paid for it, got a wig and all the needed things for the costume.... Then did a makeup test one day and it took 3 entire hours to get my eyebrows ginger. And I was not about that life. A friend suggested that I try Mitaka instead, since we had similar features and demeanors. I was here for it. And it required much less makeup wizardry.

@rattleandburn was an absolute gift and switched what she was making, and then I had to track everything else down.

Interestingly, I actually ended up getting approved in the IOC with my line officer first, and then submitting the first order LT about a week after, but that 100% was not the intention. Esp since I need to go back and remake that whole uniform.

Some of the best advice I was ever given for costuming overly serious/slightly intimidating characters.
"Head up, shoulders back, walk like you've just been sent to kill Captain America."

It worked very well for Kylo, but I found it carried over pretty nicely for officers as well (if not better. Apparently I have a somewhat intense face if I make an attempt)

The other piece of advice I can give is develop your officer's character! If you know who they are, what their likes and dislikes are, and how they behave, you'll have a way easier time and people get really into it. My First Order officer is really freaked out by Kylo. I've had small children try to fight him for me. It's adorable and they love it.

They may not have to take it entirely apart; but will at least have to take out the lining, most likely. Its quite possible to get the majority dimensions and then do a little math and extrapolate a little.

There is a pretty good olive drab/field grey twill that JoAnn's carries now, but they carry it inconsistently and not at every store, mostly just their big ones that carry the broader suiting collection. I know @Tentayena ordered some off their site so he may remember its name or have the link, if you can get your hands on that its a good fabric and very inexpensive.

A couple notes on the ones you linked, since I have sampled them on my hunt for a consistent source. The TrimFabric one is gorgeous, very nice rich color, soft. It doesn't breathe well, as its full poly, and will pill beneath the armpits/belt and on the inner trouser legs after a few wears.

The Onlinefabricstore one; its a little bit too dark to be accurate. I have used it in red for Isard; fabric quality surprisingly nice for the price, but same as the above with the pilling and lack of breathability

The wool-poly blend from TrimFabric is a good quality fabric, has the right amount of natural fiber + manmade to be durable but not pill. Your mileage may vary on the color though, I thought it was too dark but thats just my opinion.

Edit: forgot I'd posted about it on facebook, the SKU for buying online is 400157754977, and here's a relatively true to color image, although it reads a bit more grey in real life

I'd definitely suggested seeking out a custom build or crow props. I have the ImperialBoots ones (bought them in the first wave) I can count on my fingers how many times i've worn them still; the zipper is broken, the soles are peeling off, the leather is cheap and scuffed through/can't be buffed out. Huge disappointment there; Gio at least uses nice leather on his builds.

Just poking my head in to throw out a few more vendors for First Order boots, mostly because the quality on the imperialboots is somewhat less than desired.

Gio at Crow Props has begun taking commissions for First Order officer boots around the same price point as IB, and are custom made to you.
Or, if money isn't an issue (I know it was somewhat for you specifically, but I just want to throw these out for anyone who might be lurking) Magnoli Clothiers recently released these

My wallet still hurts looking at them tbh.

    Also re. Gloves
They look good to me! The flair on the gauntlet might be a bit tricky to tuck into a sleeve, but provided the leather is soft enough, i don't see it barring anything approval wise

Boots unfortunately wouldn't work for a couple of reasons, the soles are the wrong sort of shape and have a visible grip, and yeah I do think they are too short unfortunately, or would be. They look to be about shin height rather than knee! The stitching patterns aren't quite right either. :S

Spike's covered the additional options for boots. Unfortunately the boots are a bit of a bespoke item, so they're a pricey part of an FO build but worth doing right to avoid as much grief as possible come clearance.

Regarding the gloves, they are plain on the back of the palm however the large seam at the wrist might be overly visible and could become a concern. Additionally since they are gauntlet style gloves, the extra fabric around the forearm below the wrist might be uncomfortable, or bulky, beneath the sleeves of your tunic when you wear the costume. :S

@rattleandburn posted a great guide on the different types of makeup for Thrawn!

Definitely would go for one of the higher quality, alcohol activated brands to reduce the rub off on the white uniform though

Tentayena reacted to GDMorti in Hux & FO General amends!
    Hi guys!

A couple of things I've noticed regarding General Hux's CRL (and in turn, the generic FO General's CRL) and I'd like to request the following changes please!

    1. At some point (I believe back when Hux was most recently overhauled some months ago) the fold-over detail at the knee of the jodhpurs was removed. It did used to be there prior to the overhaul as optional but this needs to be basic clearance as a key feature of the pants design. This is a key aspect of the costume, and appears as an acceptable basic clearance requirement on the grey Lieutenant/Captain CRL. Please can this be added? You can see them a lot throughout the movie, and in the visual dictionary, and on several Hux action figures etc etc. You can also clearly see them in place on the CRL model's pants. Should just need to copy across the text from the Lieutenant/Captain as they're the same pants just in Hux's fabric!

    2. The greatcoat should have a split at the rear of the coat. It starts at the centre of the waist seam and goes right to the bottom. You can see this in the film, during Hux's speech, the wind catches the coat and you can see straight through that split. Check out this vid from around 1:18 in:

Again, this split is visible in several action figures etc. It is also clearly visible on the CRL model's coat. It's a key aspect of the coat's design, not hard at all to put into place, and should be there!

    3. For whatever reason the generic FO General has not been updated at all to keep up with Hux's updates. If one was to make a generic General and not a Hux, they'd be held to completely different standards to a Hux candidate. This needs updating in full please!

I actually had never noticed this before, but I had a second and flipped through the older comics and in issue #2 it has red over blue, then switches to Blue over red in issue #3. I haven't read the new issue yet, but the screencaps seem to indicate that it stayed that way.

    Colorist error maybe?
    Unsure
That's a really good catch though, I didn't even notice!!

Like I said, I appreciate all the Information. I’m already well on the way to creating the uniform pictured in the cover art, as I perfer the realism of the cover art as opposed to the angular appearance of the hastily drawn frames.

As Hask has stated, some things are illustrated incorrectly. I agree. There is oversight by Disney, but at the same time, not everything is meticulously scrutinized, and some details are simply passed without a second glance.

Its ts all based on where the artist wants the focal point of the frame.

Just popping in to toss in my two cents

It would be /extremely/ easy to modify an existing line officer uniform to the ISB style.
I have a spare cosplaysky uniform that I've had lying around for a bit to harvest for hat fabric (they messed up measurements and let me keep it)
I'd be more than willing to make a quick tutorial if there's interest?

A couple of notes, having read through this discussion.

Cover art has little to no bearing on the content of the book; they're done by guest artists who have a huge amount of leeway, and are often just for aesthetics, and each issue of Thrawn so far has had 1-3 variant covers. Marvel did a series of Variant covers about 1.5 years ago in homage to popular hip-hop album covers, using superheroes, doesn't mean Dr. Strange is canonically starting a rap career  They're the comic equivalent of movie posters that take a lot of artistic license. So, uniform variance on a cover drawn by someone who has no other relation to the work and possibly hasn't even read it is iffy at best; comic cosplayers take that all with a grain of salt in regards to it being canon.

The ISB-style tunic flap is internally consistent on officers within the run, across a variety of ranks and jobs. Its especially noticeable on Eli and Thrawn as they're in the spotlight, up through issue three.

What's interesting to note, however, is Tarkin has a normal uniform type when he shows up. Thrawn has the different flap tunic, until he's promoted to Admiral, after which he has a standard tunic like Tarkin, as seen in previews for issue #4, while lower-ranked Eli still has the other style.

The consistently and use for certain ranks/characters definitely shows its not an art error of any kind, its a conscious design choice. (However I would easily accept the argument that the lack of princess seams on anybody is probably for easy of shading and not muddling the image with unnecessary lines, but they probably should be left out if its comic-variant, ISB-flap style, field grey uniform in the ranks we see in book)

and here again we see a room where everyone is Governor/Moff or Admiral rank, and they're standard

literally right before promotion, straight ISB style flap:

immediately after promotion: Eli in ISB style, Thrawn in new standard style:

Its a deliberate choice by the art team, internally consistent within the run, so ideally a low-ranked Thrawn or any Eli Vanto should be wearing the IBS flap style line officer. An Admiral Thrawn should be in a standard uniform.

    So, TL;DR here

A potential CRL for Comic Thrawn should feature ISB flap style uniform as pictured for ranks Lieutenant through Captain, Admiral rank should be applied to standard uniform style only. Big ???? on whether its worth picking over lack of princess/back arm seams, as no ones been up in arms about their non-existence in the past on other comic runs. Also I've messaged the artist about clarity on what ranks get what

True. It would be possible to get cleared with a Line officer, then do the makeup for Lt. Thrawn. However, Ill just add a caveat to this. Generally, out of respect to the Garrison, its a good idea to inform both your GCO and GEC that you'll be "Lt. Thrawn", just to make sure that its okay for you to do that. Also, for official, canon troops, Lt Thrawn would likely not be allowed to be trooped in.
This could warrant discussion. I will say that, for once, the comic does seem to be consistent (woot!!), so that definitely helps. The one panel Anthony showed above seems to be an exception; I just quickly looked through the first 3 issues of Thrawn that I have and they're all similar to the ISB yoke. If someone is willing to make an "ISB style" olive-green uniform, its definitely a possibility

Would it be a better term to use “movie” Troops instead of “canon” Tripp’s?  The comic books are canon... as are video games, the novels any other material in addition to the cartoons.

It is the pre-2013 legacy material that is not considered (and yet still is in many circumstances)

I still believe there are enough images of the details of Thrawn’s Line Officer uniform  in detail, that it is irrelevant whether or not to have the high yoke or lower yoke. (Unsure of technical terms)

while the change is simple enough, the cover art is more iconic than that of the inside of the comic. The illustrations are hasty and lack much detail, where as time is spent on the cover art and less angular, more realistic artistic talent is applied.

I argue that it is the higher yoke that is most acceptable.

Let me put it this way, if I am dressed as the interior Thrawn Illustration holding up a comic book with the cover art,  appearing to be accurate, it appears that in fact I was too lazy to make the tunic appear as it does on the cover. Lol. It’s a case of irony.

grand admiral Thrawn, was in fact based on cover art as well, correct?

    Why not LT Thrawn too?

The realism is much more likely to recreate, on top of the fact that I’d be standing next to “real-life” valine officers from the film, wearing the same colors and a different top. It would appear odd and unprofessional.
