I think that is what most people do. The olive-green color does vary quite a bit. Even in different lighting, the same fabric can look drastically different.

Thanks! The person who wants me to make their uniform can't wear wool due to allergies, so we are going for the polyester gabardine route. :)

  2. Hello all!

I'm trying to source my own olive gabardine, and I wasn't sure if anyone knew where a good fabric could be purchased. I find plenty of olive gabardine, but the shades tend to vary. Would you suggest just getting swatches of each fabric I find and choosing the one closest to screen accurate?

Those look pretty cool, but I wonder if they'll stick out too much. Have you thought of using ironed on vinyl for the collar insignias? Those will give you a flat look that would be more accurate.

I offered to embroider them on for her directly as well. Of course that's up to her if she wants to do it that way.

Okay. If it doesn't have a 501st/IOC Logo, you can put up a sales thread in one of the subfolders for the Imperial Commissary, but there are a few things to keep in mind...

Only 501st Members can put up sales threads. I don't like non members selling to members.

Keep your prices in mind, if I find a sale for an extreme amount, I'll shut it down. No one profits off of our members.

If you aren't ready to sell; don't post a sales thread.

Make sure your research is backed up with photo reference.

Photos are better than digital renderings.

The Command Staff tries to not promote vendors.

If people order from you, they do so at their own risk.

That's a lot to keep in mind when selling. If you are looking to do a run, contact me via PM and we can hash out the details.

Sorry, I would have replied to this in my last post, but I didn't see it until it was too late.

I completely understand non members not selling to members, not a problem.
I've been selling various embroideries for a number of years, and I generally only charge for materials and time spent/labor/wear on the machine, as well as shipping.

I'll keep everything you said in mind, of course. I just wanted to be of help to people if it was needed. :)

    What he said.

So, as a Merch Officer (puts on my cap) there is nothing stopping you from making non 501st patches - other than possibly running afoul of LFL copyrights.  Hence why when people ask in public something like "where can I buy a Stormtrooper/Vader/whatever costume, we refer them to the boards - my understanding was it was an agreement we made with LFL.  That said - if you're trying to meet a CRL, yes, make sure you follow the CRL.

As Kalani said, given you're here in Dallas, either Hawk (Midwestern Garrison) or Mark (Northern Darkness Garrison) would be a good place to start to look over your sample.  Or they may jump in here and refer you to a LMO or your GML.

I honestly am excited to see what you do with the Thrawn patch - though I really need to stop buying patches and start putting them on my jacket :P

Thanks for the input! I'll create some samples of these after I move (March 25!) and get my sewing space set back up again, and see about going from there and getting in touch with the proper people. I would be happy to be able to keep an open run for these sorts of simple patches for anyone who needs it to complete a costume for approval; they're easy to make, just a little time consuming because it takes some hours for one to be embroidered.

  6. Hello, all!

Just a quick question for those in the know.

After I finish my move in a few weeks, I will have my sewing space set back up better than ever. I have seen that there is a need and interest in patches with various emblems for various uniform needs (First Order, Seventh Fleet, Imperial, etc). I have been embroidering patches for some years, and I'd be happy to open up an open run thread once my sewing space is up and running again in a few weeks.

How would I go about ensuring that these patches would meet 501st standards before having people purchase? I would assume the CRLs would have guidelines on size requirements and colors, but in the instance where this is not the case, what is your advice?

yes that is what i mean, i was planing on placing one on my imperial officer captain, if you do make them please contact me i will order a few :)

I had someone place an order, so as soon as I get a digital render, I will post it so you all can review it.

I am charging $35 per patch plus shipping for a shoulder/sleeve size.

  8. As a few of you might have seen in my general discussion thread, my partner is going to begin building a Sith Empire officer's uniform with the express desire to apply as the character Malavai Quinn from Star Wars: The Old Republic. There was some great discussion about how to go about doing this in the other thread, as well as in person with my partner, and we've agreed that, while she is going to be constructing the majority of the costume, I'll be 'advising' and helping out with patterns and other aspects of the costume as well. This includes writing the CRL for it, and documenting the stages of the costume build for said purpose. (I'll have a WIP thread going in the appropriate  board for the costume build itself.)

We've decided, as far as costume construction goes, to use the Imperial Staff Officer CRL as a starting point of reference for the jacket fabric choices, stitching lines, patterning, and structure, and develop from there.

I'm starting this thread in the hopes of starting to work on the preliminary stages of the CRL - references, details, construction points and fabric choices, sourced materials and the like. And I'm looking forward to all the great feedback and input from all of you! Everyone has been wonderful thus far.

I saw that it was mentioned, that there needs to be three different sources of visual reference for the CRL submissions? Film, toys, comics, etc. Unfortunately, in the case of this uniform, I don't think any other references exist outside of the games that it comes from. And fanart. Is this still the case, or are there exceptions?

  9. I just sent the request to join! I will also invite my partner. And ah! Armor party! I know several people who are in that group! I would LOVE to come out and meet you all this weekend; I'll ask her if she is also interested! What's the info on the location and times? :)

I...honestly had no idea that there was a Dark Empire/Alliance group, and that sounds fantastic. I'll check them out!

  10. Wow! A lot to respond to in an hour! I love you guys. :)

I'll talk to my partner about this. We'll likely use copious references from the game, combined with some existing CRLs of officer uniforms, to get an idea of how to proceed. Getting those three detailed references shouldn't be a problem, knock on wood! And then write up the CRL probably together? Based on the work put into it. We'll include some variances (collar insignia colors, belts, etc), and also what she ends up doing to make it Quinn as well. I've found several patterns that we can Frankenstein together to make it work, and I'm going to recommend garbadine wool as a good fabric for the base uniform. I'll let her decide on the type of leather to use for the accents - she is the leatherworker, not me!

As for my Sith Warrior, I'm not going to be building off of any direct reference from the game, and instead just create a design that's based on the Sith aesthetic. I'm not comfortable exposing my midsection, for example, but I am able to construct pieces of armor for a given design. I was going to approach it the way I would approach a costume design for a stage production, drafting a design based on a design board with inspirations and references from the canon materials. I didn't think that was acceptable (though the hair and makeup approach will certainly be canon - she is a Chiss, and I have experience in body paint and wigworking. :) )

@Dimentex ! :o You are Star Garrison! That's where we are located; we are in the Frisco/The Colony area. :)

  11. Here is a screencap I scrounged up online somewhere; apologies for the low res. But it appears that the uniform itself is about the same. Quinn gains the bandoleer after achieving the Captain rank (when he joins your party), but this generic officer also has one.

The differences are that Quinn himself never wears a hat, unlike the generic officers, and his collar insignia are red, whereas this officer's are a grey or 'silver' tone. He also has facial features specific to his character.maxresdefault.thumb.jpg.354d4741005d5645480c3cf63465c2d2.jpg

  12. I suppose two could be built from the build? Have one that includes the specifics for Quinn, and one that does not for the generic. It doesn't seem necessarily that hard to add or subtract those differences?

(I will find some screenshots to compare Quinn to a generic officer ASAP. )
