I know they've (IOC leadership) had to make judgments on things more obvious (like facial hair) in the past.
Have they? I've seen bearded officers. I understand that named characters have a standard that you have to make an effort to cosmetically approximate them, but I've never heard of a person who can't troop as a generic officer because they've got a tattoo or piercing.

Concentrating on Borlandin, can you provide any shots of the tunic he wore?
Unfortunately, I don't think any such shots exist. Maybe that will be remedied when that Making of Solo book comes out next year, but at present there's only conjecture. There are shots of Beckett's collar that suggest that at least he is wearing an officer's tunic, and Bekett's muscle Korso is wearing a staff officer tunic under his trench coat.
There's hardly an inch of Bolandin's tunic visible, since his scarf covers the collar and tucks into the armor.

I'm presently working on a Lieutenant Bolandin costume. Personally I hope both that a generic officer is permitted and that it falls under the IOC's umbrella, because this detachment offers top notch support for research, instruction and supply of accessories.

Sloan's tunic looked grey to me in the Kanan comic. Her armada card is grey too. The only other color I've seen her depicted in is a white uniform like thrawn, but I think that was fanart.

I had completely forgotten about Admiral Brom Titus. He bugged me at the time, and he buggs me still. I guess he's just a Krennic sort of situation, a special-project-leader why-not-a-fleet-admiral-too wear-whatever-the-hell-you-want kind of guy. Glad to hear about the guy in solo though.

My friends enjoy calling me a "Space Nazi" whenever we go to cons. But, I'm sure a lot of us get that. . .
Honestly it happens less than I had expected. I got it worse when I used to go to anime conventions in a uniform from Mobile Suit Gundam, and people would throw their hands up and shout "Sieg Zeon!" at me all the time.

Sorry if this is an asinine question, it just got stuck in my head and I don't think I can make it go away without putting it out there. Going by canon sources, what is the highest rank of any black uniformed officer who appears on screen? I know in fairness that the relationship between costume and rank can be fraught, but who seems to have the highest apparent rank, judging by the amount of bling on their chest?
I went through ANH earlier tonight. Is it Praji? He's got six squares on his uniform. I can't remember any black uniformed personnel in ESB apart from Navy Troopers. RoTJ is a wash because everyone wears a captain's insignia. Is there anybody I'm forgetting about in Solo or Rogue 1?

There are contradictions in the films wherein officers with identical Rank Plaques are given different configurations of code cylinders. The best recommended method is to choose a particular officer that appears on screen who has the rank bar you wish to copy, and then copy their code cylinder arrangement as well.
For example Piett wears one code cylinder when he is a captain (Three Red over three Blue). When he is an admiral (Six Red over Six Blue) he wears three code cylinders.
Also keep in mind that code cylinders which have brass coloured clips were used in the original trilogy, and code cylinders which have silver coloured clips were used in the anthology movies Solo and Rogue One. So, ideally your Rank bar, code cylinder color and the presence or absence of the notch in your hat's disk should all conform either to the Original trilogy style, or to the anthology movie style.

I custom ordered from Hessen last year. If I recall correctly, they missed the mark of their ETA by a little bit, but the boots arrived in their own good time. I wouldn't say they're "trust-breachy" in the way that Anovos are. Have you been in touch with them by phone, that's usually better than email.

There are moustaches on Colonel Yularen from ANH and Admiral Ozzel from ESB. Lieutenant Bolandin in Solo is scruffy enough to almost have a goatee.

Best of luck to you!

This has been a great discussion. How do you fellows feel about accents? Of course I'm aware that that many of the officers in ANH have North American accents, but there's always going to be an appeal to matching the clipped dialect of Peter Cushing or Julian Glover or Kenneth Colley. Would you have patience with a poor yankee officer trying his best to speak The King's English?

Politics in media is a fun topic. First of all, I'd like to address that all of the political entities in the Star Wars universe leave something to be desired. The Republic was permissive of horrifically exploitative corporations and backroom cliques. Even at its best, it was hardly better than a forum for planetary oligarchs and monarchs. Recently there has been some wonderful deconstruction of the Jedi, concerning their shades of autocracy and theocracy. There have been some fascinating youtube videos in the past couple of years which emphasize the problematic elements of the Jedi ethos, especially how Jedi stoicism carries several hallmarks toxic masculinity, how Yoda and Kenobi are both deceitful and manipulative in the films scripts, and how Jedi indoctrination pushes both Anakin and Luke toward emotional repression, rather than opening an avenue toward emotional support.
Now, how does the Empire shake out politically? It's just plain fascism. Yes, you can feel sympathy for the humanity of some of the characters swept up in it, such as Ciena Ree, Rae Sloane and Eli Vanto, but the political institution itself is thoroughly dystopian. You're better off not making apologies for it. The shortfalls of the Republic, the Jedi, or the Rebellion don't excuse it.
You do not have to be any sort of fascist apologist to play-act a bad guy from Star Wars. I'm a faaaaar lefty. I have membership card from the IWW in my pocket. I buddy around with Marxists and Anarcho-Syndicalists. You're not obliged to internalize the ideology of a costume you wear. Especially if it's a costume that you primarily wear at charity events for kids.

I liked the film quite a bit. I think they fundamentally misapprehend that Han is a good person who does some bad things.
I contend that Han is a no good dirty rotten scoundrel, and that the drama of the character is whether he will go against his nature on occasion. TFA understood that Han was bad news for his wife, for his son, and for his business partners, and then he finally elevates himself by trying to do right by his son. I know I'm going to die on this hill.
That aside, Ehrenreich is fine. I can't really find any fault in his performance. It's no fault of his that the writing/casting of Solo tended toward the supporting cast upstaging the lead. The performances from Harrelson, Bettany, Glover and Clarke were dripping with so much charm, that poor Han almost came off as a wallflower by comparison.

For the most part Imperial officers that we have seen are naval. The Imperial navy is the empires largest branch as well.
But, honestly, I just assumed navy for it.
And as I stated earlier, I would love to reclaim/share General Veers and the Mud trooper officers and create a Ground Command as well. Future goals if any of this takes off.
Funnily enough, I've sort of defaulted to that myself. Each of my Rogue One rank plaques follow the naval (More blue tiles than red) pattern from Dillon's rank guidelines.

Out of interest, what's the mindset for using the term "Fleet Command." I'm not particularly bothered by it, but it's a bit suggestive that all officers do is walk around the hallways of star destroyers.

Now that the answer is out there, can we take a moment to appreciate that Tagge was a sharp fellow? I love there's a depth of internal dissent written into to the original script. It kind of hangs a lampshade on what could otherwise be taken as some cartoonishly hubristic plot points. This is right up there with the cut Jerjerrod scenes from RoTJ.

Good heavens what a gordian Knot this is. In my head it sounds so simple to just collect everything with a non 451 style Black staff tunic into one place. Then it’s just a matter of seasoning with the right accessories. However, people have made a compelling case that it can get confusing which accessories go with what.
Still though, it feels that these are structurally just three costumes. ANH tunic, Non-ANH tunic W/short boots, Non-ANH tunic W/tall boots. Of the three, the latter continues to recieve new accessories through Rogue 1 and Solo (An presumably in Kenobi, and in Fett...)
I’m not going to pretend for a second that I know how the sausage gets made, but to a spectator it seems like adding accessories is easier than creating CRLs. And it seems like it would be expedient to leave the old ANH and Warrant (short boot) costumes alone, and just keep piling accessories on to the Black tunic (tall boot) costume as the anthology films keep adding them.
As a last note, I think a conversation about which names for these costumes feel right or feel wrong is a totally separate issue.

Hmm, I'm tempted to get those textured imperial cogs, but the price is steep even with the discount.

I'm sorry to hear that. It wouldn't hurt to get in touch with your local in the meantime. Maybe build toward Imperial Gunner? Un-costumed handlers are usually in short supply too.
