Personally I recommend getting the whole kit.  It is best to get a hat with your uniform so the fabric matches.  It'll be a lot harder to match later if you want to get it.

But after that if you want to do what you see in the photo you are perfectly able to.

And that rank there is a fleet captain.  I know they have been all over the place with what they call things.  The number of code cylinders is not connected to the rank, but the higher the rank the more code cylinders we see

Admiral Rampart does not wear a hat.  None of the imperial officers in Star Wars Squadrons wear a hat.  The number of moments where they do not wear a hat in the comics is too numerous to list.

I'm seeing the cap is optional, but I didn't notice any officers in rogue 1 or mandalorian without it. Does anyone have a reference for a character without it?
