  1. They call it "SCA" around here :)

The SCA for me is a little fantasy in the canons of historical reconstruction we simulate redo things with materials similar to those of the pieces stored in museums 8)

As a looooooooooooooooong time member of the SCA I have to say that a great many people who are part of it, especially here in Europe, strive incredibly hard to get it right by using period materials and techniques. We are not all out there on the fantasy road.

The thing that people forget about the SCA is that it began as a back yard BBQ in California and kinda grew from one thing into another. Now it's a huge world wide club that has a time span from roman times to 1599...You see a lot of variety. In difference to many of the European re-enactment groups the SCA is a broad spectrum recreation group that allows a whole lot more freedom to explore. ( I don't say it's perfect it's not, but it's not all bad either) There are many people here who hand sew their garb to patterns the researched from primary sources, the same goes for cooking and many many other arts and sciences.

If you really want a great example of an SCA person who does it right then I highly recommend you check out Randy Asplund's site.

This is what I do in the SCA, aside from make bad clothes, telling stories, complaining about the cold while camping in Sweden in spring.... and starting fires...

I've been doing the medieval art work for well over 10 years maybe even longer and what is in the gallery pretty much ranges that time span.

I would love to get into 18th C recreation stuff but you don't see a lot of that here, here you get a lot of 12C European or Viking ( which is kinda cool)

When we lived in Ticine ( Italian speaking Switzerland) we went to a medieval fair thing at the Bellinzona castles but it wasn't that good sadly, and after that we never seemed to find anything medievaly in that region at all which was a real shame because Germany ( where we had come from) is full of medieval fairs and we missed them a lot.

Switzerland has a fantastic recreation group called the Company of St. George. One of their members is a Canadian who now lives in Switzerland and was incidentally one of the artists who worked on Lord of the Rings, John Howe. Their attention to detail and accuracy is amazing.

And as a side note the SCA style of fighting isn't done with live steel because it is a full on contact sport. None of it is choreographed or rehearsed and many of the fighter study period techniques form manuscripts written at the time. These guys and gals REALLY hit each other with all they have so live steel is out of the question.

Sorry I didn't mean for this to be so long but I always feel I have to stand up for the Scadians who strive to get the medieval arts and works right because there are a lot of us who do try to be as accurate as possible. It's not all fantasy or make believe and many of us work really hard to keep it that way.

Merlyn I'm sorry I explained wrong but you know are here in Italy the SCA and very little rough and I apologize if I do say bad things of SCA Living History.

Forgive me if you can
