  1. IOC merchandise is for IOC Detachment members only. If a merch run is to be opened up for general 501st Legion members, it would be posted on the Legion forum. We prefer to give IOC members first crack at all merchandise.

If you own a qualifying IOC costume and it has been approved by your GML, please follow the instructions posted in applying for IOC membership.

  2. Just wondering about the acceptability of understated earrings for female officers. This is a concern because if she takes them out, the holes close up fast.

    --Jonah

    They are perfectly fine.

  3. Just a quick note for all forum members:

If you are an official member of the IOC -- that is, your costume has been reviewed and approved by your GML -- please make sure of two things:

    1. [*:eds2d289] You have been added to the "
IOC Members" usergroup. Instructions are on the main forum page under the "IOC Discussion Forum" link:
"To gain access to this and other restricted IOC-only forums, please request access through your user control panel to the IOC Members user group."
[*:eds2d289] You have requested addition to the IOC membership listing on the Legion database. You can request access through http://www.501stforums.com and manage your Legion profile from there.

Remember that there are TWO approvals steps needed. Once you have access to the private area HERE, you will be able to take part in the DL question & answer sessions.

Once you have access on the Legion Database, you will able to actually VOTE.

Both functions are conducted on separate Web sites.

  4. The first thing is to explain how IOC is no longer meeting the needs of Grand Admirals. Since this is the first I've heard of this, I'd like to understand the background. What needs are not being met, and can we do something else to accommodate those needs without needing to form a new Detachment?

My philosophy has always been that a Detachment is member-driven. It is and always will be what YOU give and take from it. I can't anticipate everyone's wishes, so it's not reasonable for me or anyone who occupies the DL office to predict how to accommodate members' desires without your input.

There's comparatively low activity within the individual subforums for ISBs and GAs as it is. Do you believe that a separate Detachment will increase interest or activity for those costumes? If so, how and why? And how is it different from using existing resources?

I am not opposed to IOC costume types splitting off into their own Detachments, if there's a set of solid reasons to back it up.

  5. I changed the color of your text because the purple-on-black/dark-grey was just too hard to read.

While you can cut the metal sheet with a Dremel, it will be difficult to get a clean straight edge, as well as getting good 90° angles.

The white inserts from the lens caps shouldn't be removed entirely. Just the two little clips on the sides should be broken off. Otherwise, any adhesive you use on the inside of the lens will be visible, so any stray air bubbles will be visible.

I've never heard of magnet paint, so I'm at a loss there.

  6. I won't be there so I can't help, but I know that Lee (former GML and former GLG member up here in MI) stepped down due to some unknown (outside of DSG) circumstances, so that could have contributed. I'd just ask your current GML or Jen to see what's up with your app if you haven't gotten any feedback on corrections or updates.

  7. Great info folks! Thank you much!

@ Crimson: I have applied for an account at the KTB about 7 days ago. Still waiting for it to be activated. I have picked up a few things already, but I am waiting to see some feedback before I actually buy the Kilt.

Ping Russell Henderson of Carolina. I believe he's temporarily in charge while Joe is deployed.

  8. Well, suffice to say that we in KTB do what we do however we want. We're not so formal as to get into military history and attempt to replicate it at all.

We're troopers of the 501st, and we happen to wear kilts. That's all. Nothing more formal than that, and no other requirements than that. 501st has requirements and rules, KTB is a casual place to get away from it and relax. :)

  9. I am a KTB member. My first kilt -- the Irish national -- was bought from Fredonline via eBay (who now goes by "Tartanista"). Really high quality, low price, but only one length (from waist to hem), so it's long on me.

My second kilt was the MacIntosh hunting, bought from The Frugal Corner out of PA. Low price, but not a wide range of tartans to choose from, and since they're a mom-n-pop shop, their technology isn't the greatest, but they're honest people.

Both of these had to be retired as they're much too big on me now.

As a result, I bought a true wool made-to-fit-me kilt via scotweb.co.uk, also in the Macintosh hunting tartan. That, I love, but the material makes going regimental a bit...shall we say...awkward? :)

MR's kilts are unfortunately far too expensive for what they are and for such a limited selection. There are MANY more dedicated sources out there with a wider range of choices and for less.

As far as tartan choice, there are many arguments to it. Some are "tartan Nazis" who declare that you are only allowed to wear the tartan of a clan with which you are already associated, or from which you've received permission, or any of the "general" tartans. Others take a much more relaxed view.

    Kinda' like 501st costuming! ;)

If you want detailed kilt, outfit, and culture info, you can just start posting at KTB. You don't have to be a full member to just do the research (you do, obviously, to get in on the obligatory KTB merch and members-only sections) and ask questions.

  10. This is a seller on eBay who always seems to have everything and anything possible for costumes and accessories. However, due to several reports (not just in the 501st) of poor quality and customer service and in addition to legal issues originating in the United States, the costuming community recommends avoiding transactions with SFP.

Please note that this recommendation is not an official stance of any costuming group, including the 501st. The 501st traditionally maintains a hands-off policy regarding vendors -- it is not the 501st's business or mission to recommend, endorse, or warn against any specific vendor. This message is posted as a courtesy to the IOC community as a compilation of reviews and recommendations going back many years.

  11. The only red-uniformed officer we see is Ysanne Isard herself. It is unknown whether any other rank-and-file officer wore red (highly unlikely, but that's just speculation on my part).

Isard reported directly to the Emperor. As a department, it's independent of the military arm of the Empire.

  12. The average person really can't tell. Even those who've seen the films. The TIE is such a quick and barely seen character from the first movie that those who watched "Star Wars" (note that I'm not calling it ANH to illustrate that separation) likely wouldn't have remembered. And their appearance in ROTJ wasn't significant enough to warrant remembering.

There is a DZ category in the 501st, but like all 501st costumes, they have to be deliberately villainous characters. Sandpeople attacked Luke, Jawas kidnapped/stole the droids.

  13. Yeah, kinda'. :) It's only through the grace of student loans that I can keep going.

And from this older guy's perspective, my recommendation to all you younger folks is to just get it all done in one go. Don't take a break with the intent of finishing up later.

"Later" will end up becoming "15 years" and it'll be that much more difficult to get back into the swing of things. As it stands now, it'll be about another 6-7 years before I can finish my undergrad because of all the time off I took.

  14. In high school, I worked as a dishwasher at a restaurant then moved up to food prep. I did my requisite tour of duty at Burger King, and then worked at a kennel for 2 years through my senior year in high school and the first stint in college.

Then I started working full time after that and college took a back seat for a long time.

Here in Michigan, there's no such thing as "not driving." :)

  15. When you buy a tube of caulk, the tips has to be cut off first. The size of the cut will determine the size of the hole and therefore the size of the bead that comes out. It takes some practice to do right.

The purple thingie -- I'm assuming you mean a caulking gun? A metal frame with a trigger that the tube is inserted into? Not always. Some caulk will come in squeeze bottles, like a tube of glue.

And don't worry about feeling tool-dumb. The only way to get tool-smart is to learn! :)

Or learn from others' mistakes....like "never tighten the bolts that attach a toilet tank to the toilet too tightly" ;)
