I am getting started on the Imperial Officer hat and I have a pattern by Kathy van Beuningen, which is a fantastic guide but a little bit confusing to me. I am an extreme novice when it comes to sewing. Has anybody found and used a different pattern that is more Sewing Illiterate friendly? Or is this a situation where I am just being intimidated by the pattern?
I think you're just intimidated. This is the only pattern I've used, and using the instructions you can do it. I'm a very experienced costumer and even I had problems visualizing how it all goes together until I did some practice runs. Yes, print several copies on legal paper, then practice on muslin (or throw-away fabric) about the same weight as your final fabric. The top of the hat is not a circle but kind of egg-shaped (something I didn't notice until I started using this pattern). There is a lot of folding and a few layers to sew through, so make sure you have a good machine, strong thread, and sharp needle. It's also helpful to have a quilters foot to make the lines on the bill of the hat (this makes the lines even). TIP: make sure the final fabric for the hat is the same fabric use for the tunic and pants. I use black gaberdine from Joan Fabrics (I have bought a bolt in the past, but it's mostly gone now). This makes your uniform look .... uniform. (if that makes sense). If you have questions pm me and I'll try to talk you through it.

I'm interested in a couple stickers for my armor bin. You could ask Albin Johnson where he gets his R2-KT stickers, they're very nice quality and durable. I've had mine on my armor bin for two years without a scratch.

Got my gloves in a couple weeks ago, same ones that Glen has. THEY FIT!!! and they're SOFT!! So, I'll use these until I find my buckled ones (or have someone make a pair for me). For the price these are great! Thanks to all for helping me out with this.

Well, tigger, I finally got an email from him. He's sending me an invoice for the total w/shipping (soon I hope). So, there's hope yet. I've given up on the UK ebayer, she sent me a nasty note about how she only sells good stuff and "you pay for what you get" crap.
-
Well, UK ebayers just don't know how to accept offers. She's selling them for 49 pounds (about $75). I offered 35 pounds, she came back with 45 pounds, I counteroffered 40 pounds, she stayed firm at 45 pounds (no budging). This translates to about $70 plus a lot for shipping (30 pounds = $45). Is it worth $115? Oh, when I said it was already high priced for replicas she claims they're real. I can't tell if they are or not, but still she's extremely high priced IMHO.
The source that Tigger had doesn't answer emails or accept paypal. He swears they're a good outfit, but I don't trust this source at this point. I'm 99.9% sure I won't get them in time for Starfest. Someone who does business by long distance phone and checks only doesn't really have a business. Sorry, many potential customers like myself can't afford monthly unlimited calling and I don't have a smartphone (just a prepaid tracphone for on the road only). So, back to square one. Unless someone can convince me within 48 hours why I should pay $115 for a pair in the UK. It's a lot of money for me for a pair of boots I can't even try on first.

I just made an ebay offer for boots with the metal heels. If they are a problem, is there a way to remove them? Hearing that clicking sound under my feet would probably drive me crazy! LOL Thanks for posting this question, I didn't even think of it when I made the offer this morning.

I'm so making a sticker of this, unless someone wants to do a sticker run!

I went ahead and bought the ebay ones for now. I'll keep searching for the right ANH gloves. Thanks for everyone's input.

So, no buckles then? If not I'll get the ones that Nap1815 found on ebay (link above). I like the look of those and they have small sizes (I have tiny hands). I was just trying to be screen accurate with the buckled gloves seen on the screen shots posted on these forums. I could get the plain ones now and if I find the originals I'll get those later (I'll keep searching). Will that satisfy everyone for L3 approval? If I find the right ones we can change the CRL's then.

And here's another pair I found on Etsy that might work. It's a bit pricey, but I'm willing to pay a little extra if it's the right one.

I've been searching for the buckled gauntlets for my ANH IN. This is the closest thing I can find, and I think I can add the proper buckle to it. Let me know what you all think before I order it. These do come in small, and they're fairly reasonably priced, so I think it's a good alternative to the originals (which I cannot find anywhere at this point). I'm hoping to have everything done by mid-April in time for approval before Starfest. I've posted some progress in my WIP. Thanks.

I'm hoping this is the right place to post this. I'm posting it on every forum I belong to (and I'm on a lot of boards).
My Yahoo email account was hacked this morning from someone in Argentina. I'm very vigilant about opening emails and links from those I don't know, or I don't know where they come from. I have anti-spam and anti-malware both at home and at work. I change my passwords deligently. And still someone was able to hack into my account and send a sh** load of spam to everyone I know! If you got one of these emails from me with just a link in the body DO NOT CLICK/OPEN ANY LINKS!! I never send just a link without describing what it is first.
All of this is very suspicious to me that this happened this morning after Yahoo took down the email servers for maintenance. I think they opened up the world to all Yahoo email accounts and caused this problem in the first place. If you have a Yahoo email account I suggest you change your passwords asap and make sure you set up your security questions. This is bad, for me and for Yahoo. I might be changing my email address soon to a different email provider if this doesn't get resolved soon. I have notified Yahoo on the only form I could submit, and their reply was to wait 48 hours. On the form I asked them to roll back my account 24 hours, so if anyone has sent me messages/emails from yesterday morning to the present please resubmit them Friday.
Thank you,
Lynelle

Thanks, Jason, again. I'll pm you at the MG and I'll be at the CH troop as well.

I feel stupid, after two years of service I've lost my hat greeblie at the MDA walk last Saturday (most probably in the parking lot). I'm not on speaking terms with the person I bought it from at this time. Who makes them? Or where can I get a replacement?

Please contact him through his website at farawaycreations.com. His wife, Kathy, is taking orders from there. If you pm directly on forum boards he might not get your order. Please be aware he is somewhat backlogged, but if you're just purchasing the flightsuit he should be able to box it up for you right away. Again, order through his website by using the Contact Us button on the left, and then give Kathy a few days to reply (they get overloaded with emails and she does try to answer them all). If you're still having problems please let me or Tigger know since we are personal friends of his (I go to his studio every other month it seems).

Heavy interfacing between the two pieces. There are several types on the market, some are sew-in (which I use so it stays in place) and some are iron-on. Starch tends to dissipate after awhile and can stain your fabric after several uses. Plastic tends to break after awhile, but is a good solution. If you use this approach tell the cleaners that you have a plastic insert (unless you make the insert removable and remember to remove it, which isn't a bad idea). I personally use the interfacing on many costumes that need stiffening.

Hi, Jason. Replied to your post on the MG. Hopefully your source will have size 6.5 or 7 for me. I like the "cheaper" part. See you soon.

I found these in size 7 on ebay.uk for 50 euros. It's very hard to find smaller sizes for women and would like to get these for an accurate ANH Navy Trooper. Let me know what you all think of these. I think this will work for ANH. They only have 3 pairs left, though, so I gotta act fast.
Names I've been called while Trooping...

My navy trooper gets called Dark Helmet alot. Which is funny to me since I actually have the Strawberry costume from a Spaceballs group entry at Starfest a few years ago.
My favorite nick name so far has been "drum head". A couple people thought my navy helmet was a drum. For a few weeks after the troop fellow garrison members would call me "drum head". Of course, it was all in fun, but it's died down now. I guess nobody remembers that troop. Thank god no one took out drumsticks to play my "drum".
