I managed to buy some brass from Metal Supermarket, but they didnt have 22 gauge. I bought 20 gauge (0.032"), so its a little bit thicker. Im hoping that its not too thick that I can't use it. If not, it only cost my $3, so I can always buy thinner brass. *fingers crossed*

The only issue with the slightly thicker metal is that it will be a bit tougher to bend properly, especially with make-shift tools. But it should still be possible to get a good end result.

  2. I've been meaning to do this for a couple years.  These are modified RA Stephens 6665-0055 dosiemters.  I modified to closely resemble the 6665-110101 dosimeters. The top is machine off, the viewing lens is removed and machined down, and then reinserted.  The top insert is a resin cast of an actual 6665-110101 dosimters, painted to resemble the original.  In the pic below, I have a number modified to look like the version with the "gold" colored clip (the original is a steel clip with a treatment that gives them the slight gold sheen).  I just gave them a gold spray paint hit, and distressed them to resemble the original. The one in the center is an original 6665-110101 for comparison.  I also made one with the white metal clip (cleaned up the original a bit) to match the Rogue One cylinders, and then I did three with the red cap, like Cassian Andor has.  I have a small cache of these 0055 cylinders, and I'll modifying the others fairly soon.  Cheers.

    No it did not

According to an Anovos rep on TheRPF, only the premium comes with the collar liner, FWIW.

He also claims that they patterned the hat off of two screen used hats, one of which had 5 lines of stitching, and the other 7.  Again, that's his claim.  The officer hat in the "power of costume" exhibit has only 5 lines of stitching, but I do not know its provenance.

Well, that's disappointing. :(  WW's hats are the wrong material, and Anovos are just..  wrong.  Guess it's back to making my own or coughing up the money for a new one from Jenny or the lady in my garrison.

I think the only problem with the Anovos caps is that the crown is a tad too tall.  I'm going to attempt to shortened mine some.  The overall shape is great, and the flaps are fantastic.

I can already see myself that this is a much more deluxe costume than the CS version if for no other reason than the better-shaped lace-up pants. I don't really like the hat but it's a huge improvement over CS's unapprovable one, and like everyone else is saying-- the lack of a modesty panel is fixable, especially considering CS messed up the panel on mine (so it's the same difference to me)

The material here looks.. off, like kman said. Definitely looks thicker than the CS costume which is good for this time of year but may prove to be an issue in the summer, especially for those of us wearing all black!

In the end, the major difference is, as always, funds.

The fabric is right.  I've handled an  original costume (many years ago) and I just received my Anovos Premium Hat.  The actual uniforms were made of a fabric known as "cavalry twill."  It's a kind of double knit fabric.  It has some stretch to it.  It is pretty thick, which gives it a lot of body and makes it very durable, but makes it rather warm. The Anovos cap is a nice cavalry twill (or something very close).  Gaberdine is a reasonable substitute, properly interfaced.

  6. I'm a member of the SCA, and we call the period clothes we wear "garb" or just.. you know... clothes. It makes me cringe when it's called a costume, because I'm wearing historic clothing, and once I'm "in character" so to speak, it's just clothing.

However, I can't change what people outside the SCA call it. To them, it's costumes. And that's fine. I can see where they get the idea.

When you take a fantasy or sci-fi element, such as this - something recognizable as being from a movie or show - most people nowadays, especially at conventions, will automatically call it a cosplay, or costume, where we might see it as a uniform, or armor, and only call it that.

The fact is, we can't change what people outside the group will call it. There's no way to maintain that level of control. And as more and more people pick up the term cosplay, and realize how entirely accurate it is, that's what we'll be called. Star Wars cosplayers. It is what we are, despite anyone's dislike of the term, because not everyone here makes their own costumes, and so can't really be called a costumer. So, we'll be "those Star Wars cosplayers" or "those weirdos in Star Wars costumes" or similar, even if we were to try and get the public to call it whatever it is to us...and since so many of us have such different ideas on what it ought to be called, deciding on what WE call ourselves is difficult enough without trying to bring the public into it.

If you're wearing historical clothing in the SCA, good on ya!  Most guys I see just wear a loose fitting "tunic" baggy pants, and a ring belt.  Ren faire boot moccs are popular too.  When I was doing the SCA regularly, we used to joke that it certainly WAS period clothing.... late 20th Century Scadian!  Am I dating myself?  ;)  TBH, though, the SCA also has some of the finest historical costumers out there, bar none. FWIW, I refer to my Star Wars costumes as "costumes" generically and by what they are specifically.  My Line Officer uniform is called a uniform, my X-wing outfit is a flight suit, etc.

  7. Strongbow experimented in dying some fabric to the correct color. Not sure if he used Cosplaysky, but I don't see why it can't be done.

The MuR was custom dyed to match the uniforms in the archives (all left over from ROTJ and ESB) so it manages to capture that unique photogenic quality of the originals, meaning that depending on the photo quality, they could look light olive-green, dark-green, or even grey. Cosplaysky's are close, but tend to look pea-green in every photo I've seen of them no matter what.

I did... but I wan't really able to get the Cosplaysky uniform to a satisfactory color (for me).  I think the fabric just doesn't take dye all that well. It came out looking mottled.  I may try again later when I have a larger dye kettle.  The color of the MuR uniform is pretty spot on, IMO, so I try to use that as a reference.  I was able to dye the Magnoli clothiers cavalry twill to a color very close to the MuR color. I used a 55/45 mix of RIT Dark Green and Apple Green to get the right color when mixed with the sorta "moss gray" of the Magnoli twill.  It's what I'm wearing in my avatar, but the color correction is off in that photo for some reason (my armor looks far less green in person). It's not exact, but it's close.

  8. I was excited and then saw the price.  I am debating it against the TK and TD I have built.  A suit of armor was $900 and then I needed to buy boots, blaster, belt, neckseal, etc..  Then again it is $1200 for a pair of pants, shirt and hat.  The last full suit with belt, tie and shoes cost me only $300.00.  Hmmmmmmm

    1) Cavalry twill is probably 4 times the cost of the average good quality suiting material.  Then add in custom dying.

    2) Anovos is gonna make less than 500 of these.  The average commercially produced suit is made in the thousands.

The price IS high.  But I think it's not bad considering the quality.  I will probably get one, if I can.

  9. Are you kidding? Looks a great price to me, I've paid more for dosimeters that aren't even correct models ... shame I've already got one of these for my Chief Bast.

I've gotten this style for much cheaper (5 quid). It's not actually the correct style for Bast, though close. It IS used by Tagge, so it's screen accurate. By now, I have quite the code cylinder collection. But it's not a terrible price. Now the 101's... those often go for BIG bucks. Often the price of the non-101's depends on whether or not the seller is aware of the Star Wars connection. I once bought a M19 scope for $30 because the seller didn't know the connection.

  10. That type of cylinder is worn by General Tagge, and that's a decent, though not great, price. If you really want them, contact one of our UK members and see if you arrange a purchase and reshipment. I've done it before for sellers who won't ship overseas for whatever reason.

Most who won't do it just don't want to fill out the customs forms.

  11. Although keep in mind we never see a Colonel (or the equivalent naval rank) in a black uniform. IN ANH, ALL officers use the single row rank bars, except Tarkin. AFAIK, we only see what we assume is the Colonel rank on ISB officers.

That's fine, as it is, just thought you should know in case you want to go for Level III, in which case, you need to replicate on on-screen officer.

  12. Black uniformed officers with rank badges and cylinders are only seen in ANH. The "officers" in ROTJ do no have any insignia, and are called "warrant officers" by the IOC. The one who says "you rebel scum" is armed with a the of DL-21 blaster. AFAIK, we never see his holster. No black uniformed officer is seen in ESB.

  13. If you look now they have two different ones. There is one titled new updated version . This has all the changes made in it thanks to Bids talking to them to make the changes he had done stay.

I'm pretty sure it's 501st approvable right from ordering now.

The one I got needed a collar closure, and the breeches were poorly tailored and required some work. The tunic was pretty decent for the price, otherwise, though I did add some stiffener to the collar, which is really floppy out of the box. The color for the olive uniform is a bit light, but not terrible.
