That makes no sense. "Armoured officers".

The clue is in the name.

You would think, you would hope - but their is always General Veers example - who is an AT-AT Commander!

I think there is enough of a difference, but on the other hand you have "General" Viggen, who you could also easily argue is a Rebels' Era AT-AT Commander!

Honestly we won't know until the first Armoured Officer CRL is submitted!

  2. Now for what we have all been waiting for, a reference photo of a Line Officer wearing Armour!!!!!

The officer in question is Viggen and while he has no rank if we refer to the handy Official IOC Rank Guide we can probably extrapolate that he's a General.

While I'm not command staff or the LMO, I think we have enough information to say that Officer's can wear armour and would make a good optional accessory

    • Star Wars Rebels - TV Show (offical)
    • Star Wars Rebels Magazine (official)
    • Wookieepedia (unofficial)

With that said, I do this Kris is right in thinking that the Armored Cavalry Detachment will poach a CRL for armoured officers!

FYI, Tiggie posted on her Facebook page some pics of her Rebels era rank bars. Check them out!! Same pricing as her plexiglass rank bars (I think)

Awesome that these have been announced, as I've been working with to get these created!!!!!

Note Rank Bar on armoured Thrawn curves with his armour. Not sure if it is the same with Tarkin.

    Correct!!!!!

I'm planning on order one fully constructed bar, and two not assembled so that I can curve it to armour!

I agree with James regarding basic approval. Is it valid to bring up Star Wars Force Arena in regards to Thrawn and Gov Pryce?

Note the original trilogy style rank badges and their retention of the rebels era collar insignia

not sure if someone managed to pull the 3d asset or what not but it's something neat I found too

Kindly note that their Krennic is represented with the same belt model and rank backing style

    Good Question Jay,

One that I'm probably not qualified to answer as to final approval is made by the LMO, I'm sure the DCO & DXO will have views as well but let me have a go based on precedent and logic.

CRLs are based on how to replicate a character,  in this case it's the Offical Canon representation of a Grand Admiral versus the Expanded Universe (or Legends) representation.  We also need to adhere to the standards of the 501st Legion and of the IOC Detachment, it is these standards that we are able to call ourselves "Lucasfilm's preferred Imperial(or bad guy) costuming group".  Standards are written by our observation of the primary source material keeping in mind what is possible to do (e.g. Rebels Era Officers have no seams in their sleeves, which is impossible to do, hence my proposed CRL has one not including the shoulder cap), secondary sources can be handy in finding out other details that we may not be able to see or extrapolate from the primary source but we need to keep in mind that they are secondary sources.  The example you made with Star Wars Force Arena is a good example of a secondary source, or better put their interpretation of the Character.  Like us, they have to work within the relm of possibility but also within their own accuracy margins.

For the 501st these accuracy margins are laid out in the different approval levels which is where it can get a little grey, as these include minuet details (e.g. Leather versus Leather-like) that in a collective group of similar costumes they average person would probably not notice. So Level 1 (or basic approval) should have all the key design aspects.

Before I go into more details on the Rebel's era Grand Admiral, let me use an example using the currently approvable EU Grand Admiral CRL.  In order to be approved you must have Gold Epaulets with tassels - seems pretty obvious, until you take into account.  That is until you take the offical Hasbro figure of Thrawn into account which doesn't have Epaulets.

    33543449271_05462faa0e_o.jpg

The action figure is a secondary source, hence why our CRL standards still state that you must have the Epaulets.  It's good to also know that some comic and other artistic representations of Thrawn also are sans-epaulets!

Likewise when you look at the current Hasbro figure of Thrawn, you will notice that his rank bar, has the wrong rank on it!  Again the 501st CRL will only accept the Rank Bar as it appears in Star Wars Rebels as that is the Primary source!

    31693671011_80e65623a9_o.jpg

Another great example is the Limited Edition collectors pin that, will be available at Celebration, in it again you will notice the completely wrong rank and weird bluey/greeny ting to his uniform.

    32859598803_e5fcbe5d98_o.png

So to answer your question, I would be saying no on the basis that it is a secondary source and has quite a lot of differences to the Rebel's Exa Grand Admiral for instance the topstitching, holster straps and as you pointed out the belt.

  5. Rebels' Era Imperial Officer's Cap

So with most things Rebels the caps are slightly different, not that we have started discussing characters who wears caps yet but it's never too early to discuss the changes.

I haven't done any pretty diagrams for this one yet, so here's some pics from Rebels

    33429673242_5c7e7c3270_o.jpg

So what am I noticing here

    • Size
      • Overall sizing to wearer is pretty similar if not the same as the OT Hat
      • The brim of the cap is not consistent, some are short others are long
      • The front flap is higher that the back flap
    • Shape
      • The inner crown is curved an seem free
        • this may not be that easy or possible
      • The flaps have a much slighter curve to them before sharply dropping on a 45 angle
    • Decorations
      • No top stitching on the brim
      • Top of flaps have top stitching (versus binding) that go till the 45 angles
      • It has a similar shaped code disc as to the belt
        • in these photos it looks same size as belt version in others the belt version looks bigger
      • Most have decal (iron on transfer)

My 2 cents: a Moff oversees different combat elements (Imperial Army, Navy, and Stormtroopers), so he wouldn't fall under the Armored Cavalry umbrella, they would be under his control. And an Admiral should need no explanation why he shouldn't be in the ACD. I do think that there should be dual Detachment affiliation for Officers like Veers and 501st members that wear the 181st Fighter Groups dress uniform. After all, they're Officers, too.

    Totally Agree!

I think there is a good argument for them to belong here, especially as there is enough difference between Imperial Officer Armour and AT-DP Armour!

Moff is a political/military leader.  In the early expansionary days of the republic, they would absorb a sector and the traditional leader would stay in charge with the title of Moff.  As time would go on, the moff would pass and a more democratic government would take over.  Chancellor Palpatine resurrected the moff system at the end of the Clone Wars to allow direct military coordination with sectors based there, not just traveling fleets and armies.

Any and all officers should be prepared to don armor if going into a combat situation.  The original script for Empire had Piett reporting to Vader on Hoth how many ships had been destroyed.  It would have been interesting to see if he would have worn the same armor as Veers for that scene.

    Again fully agree with you!

Now while you can't take Wookieepedia as Gospel, it has the following to say about Armour for Officers!

    Quote

In potentially hostile situations, officers could wear armor over their tunic, as well as a protective helmet and goggles similar to those worn by AT-ST drivers.[18] While this armor was sand-blue for officers wearing a regular grey uniform,[19] officers with different colored uniforms wore armor that reflected this differentially, such as Grand Admirals, who wore white armor, with golden shoulder boards similar to the ones on their regular tunic.[20]

I'd love to see Armour as an option for Rebels Era Officers!!!!

I have ordered some armour using ACD sources.

The Helmet is most likely the same just a different colour.  Currently there are two different suppliers for it:

    • DW Design - Larger in size, made from vacformed ABS
    • Fierfeks - Smaller in size, made in high quality polyurethane resin.

Talking with both suppliers this week they can do the Helmets without the faceplate (which is what we would want!)

    33614488865_2dc05a218e_o.jpg

    Fierfek                                   -                                   DW Design

For us, I think the Fierfek Helmet will be the go for officers, as DW Design is known to have a bobble head effect which I'm sure would be emphasised by the lack of Faceplate.

The Armour for Tarkin (and arguably Officers in general) is available from DW Design,  Kev can do the the front & back plates with shoulder straps without the Leg or Shoulder armour.

    33614487495_6d58867dff_o.jpg

Currently no-one is making the Grand Admiral Armour (not surprising with the episode not airing till this weekend).  Talking with Fierfeks today, he might be interested in making it in high quality polyurethane resin, but would need about 5 people interested to make a run - no pricing yet (I'll be 1st to put their hand up).

    I think that there's a 3D printable version available, but I can't remember where I saw it.

    Yes!!!!

Currently their are two version known to me:

    • Ross "Exaldear" from New Zealand has 3D modelled it,
    • Tom (501st Member) from TDK Props in Australia has also modelled it.

I'm not sure if Ross has a print of his yet?  I commissioned Tom to create mine for my Grand Admiral, so he has 3D modelled it and printed it, and is just in the process of finishing it (sanding, painting, weathering, etc...).  Once complete I'll post pictures of it but until then here is a couple of progress picture

I want a nickle every time someone says it. hahaha

But seriously, send that to Dave F, or Pablo.  I'm not a Twitter-er.

    LOL

Yeah my info on it, did came from LFL - and was given that it was just called a "Pistol"

    BUT like you, I'm not a Twitter-er

  10. Imperial Officers' Armour

Currently we have two instances of Imperial Officers wearing armour

    • Grand Moff Tarkin
    • Grand Admiral Thrawn

Nothing says "Grand" more than some shiny armour and a funny hat (I mean) Helmet!

While we are in pre-CRL territory it's hard to say who would be allowed to wear these, wether it would be limited to the "Grand" Ranks or limited further to just Tarkin and Thrawn.  Also while it is in pre-CRL Territory, the question on which detachment would look after these is also up for debate:

    • Imperial Officers Corp, due to them being officers? or
    • Armored Cavalry Detachment - because they look after armoured officers like Veers?

But until then, nothing hurts us talking about it here!

(There was a little bit of chatter over in the Q&A forum - Armour Question)

As luck would have it, both sets of armour are different - because standardising it would make way too much sense.

    Grand Moff Tarkin's Armour

Grand Moff Tarkin wears modified AT-DP Armour and Helmet.  The difference being:

    • Helmet
      • Grey in colour
      • without Faceplate
      • White Inverted Triangle versus Red
    • Armour
      • Field Grey(Olive Drab) in colour
      • with Rank Bar
      • White Inverted Triangle versus Red
      • without Shoulder Bells
      • without Leg Armour

More can be read about the AT-DP Armour over at the Armored Cavalry Detachment - AT-DP Drivers/Imperial Combat Drivers.

It's worth noting that there was a colour change for the armour between the Concept Art and the end product.  Here it is defiantly metal and matches his Belt, Code Cylinders, & Rank Bar but in the actual show it is Field Grey (aka Olive)

    33505992906_abfe9e0281_o.jpg

    Grand Admiral Thrawn's Armour

Grand Moff Tarkin wears the same Helmet as the AT-DP/Tarkin except recoloured different Armour to Tarkin is more like General Veers but different.  and a recoloured Helmet, The difference being:

    • Helmet
      • White in colour
      • without Faceplate
      • with White Goggles
      • not sure about decals
    • Armour
      • White in colour
      • with Rank Bar
      • Gold epaulets/shoulder straps
      • rounder at the bottom than Veers
      • missing electronics area (bottom centre) from Veers
      • different buttons on the left hand side (also look illuminated)
      • raised areas on right hand side flattened
      • new seam lines

    33401922702_71d1198ae2_o.jpg

As more information on this comes I'll update the post

  11. Rebels Era Bars

There are a few belts worn in Star Wars Rebels

    • Standard Imperial Officers Belt
      • Most Officers
    • Hero Imperial Officers Belt
      ("Hero" is my term)
      • Thrawn
      • Armoured Tarkin
    • Simplified Imperial Officers Belt
      • Tie Pilots
      • AT-DP Drivers

Due to the nature of the IOC costumes, we will mostly be using the Standard and Hero versions.

The difference only being minuet in that the Code Disc and stud are off centred towards the top of the belt on the Hero Version and the stud seems to be raised more - I only have one question, Whyyyyyyyy?

Below is a diagram that I've drawn up of the two different belts with  possible dimensions that I have extrapolated:

    • Belt
      • Width - 2" (50.8mm)
      • Stud/Chicago Screw - ½" (12.7 mm)
        • centre of stud 1" (25.4 mm) from edge of buckle
        • centre aligned with centre of code disc
    • Buckle
      • Width 4" (101.6 mm)
      • Hight - 2 ½" (63.5 mm)
      • Depth - about 3/16" (4.75 mm)
thinking 1/8" may be better, either way they are thicker than an OT Belt
    • Code Disk
      • Outside Diameter - 1 ½" (38.1 mm)
      • Inside diameter - ¾" (19 mm)
      • Placement
        • Standard - Centered
        • Hero - raised ¼" (6.4 mm) from centre

Hrm.  If they're opaque tiles, could this be something that, with enough effort into it, could be 3D printed?

Yeah - can't see why not!

My Imperial Officers Pistol, as with most (if not all) of Director Kermit blasters are being 3D printed.

I think you nailed on the head with effort (and I'll add care) it should be possible, my only concern would be accuracy but more than happy to be proved wrong on that.

  14. Rebels Era Rank Bars

There has been quite a lot of talk about what should and what shouldn't be accepted at what Levels:

But not much on what actually makes an accurate Rebels Era Rank Bar.

Below is a diagram that I've drawn up of the different bars that we seen in Rebels (if I've missed one PM me and I'll add it in) as well as possible dimensions that I have extrapolated:

    • Rank Bar:
      • Metal in construction
      • Height - 2 ¼" (57.15 mm)
      • Width
        • 12 Tiled Bar - 4 ¾" (120.65 mm)
        • 6 Tiled Bar - 2 ½" (63.5 mm)
        • 4 Tiled Bar - 1 ¾" (44.45 mm)
      • Rank Bar corners are rounded
        • Radius - ¼" (6.35 mm)
    • Rank Tiles
      • Opaque Acrylic in construction
      • Hight - ¾" (19 mm)
      • Width ½" (12.7 mm)
      • Height - about 1/8" (3.2 mm)
      • Tiles are in a combination of Blue, Red, and Yellow
        • Amber not accepted
      • Rank Tiles are mounted to the Rank Bar with a ¼" (6.4 mm) spaces between them.

    33486016151_6ac0cb3605_o.jpg

Can I ask that we keep the discussion to what is an accurate Rank Bar and not what is accepted at what Levels (there are other threads for that)

  15. Imperial Officers' Pistol

We still don't have a funky name for the blaster being used by the Imperial Officers in Star Wars Rebels as of yet, but my LFL source has informed me that it is only being referred to a a "Pistol" currently there at LFL - so until we have a Make & Model I think it's safe to refer to it simply as an Imperial Officers' Pistol!

    31810226515_c127c547e7_c.jpg

We mainly see this blaster with Grand Admiral Thrawn, but it has actually been used by quite a few Officers including Agent Kallus (Chopper even uses two of these at one stage!)
