  1. Hey all,

During a review of a member with a new naval trooper dress uniform in our garrison we've found an issue with the CRL.  The last line of the Pants section caused some confusion and appears to be an error:

Pants smartly rest on the top of the shoes without bunching or giving any sloppy appearance.

This appears to be a cut and paste from one of the other uniform versions with straight pants, that wear shoes/low boots and not jack boots. Caused some confusion because all the other uniforms with jack boots have the pants tucked into the boots, and BJ's pic clearly shows this as normal.

Just want to point it out so it could get an update in the next cycle.  :)

  2. Aside from Veers, I don't remember ever seeing one in the films, and now I want to look, but in the Empire comics there were officers in green armed with pistols and with holsters on their belts.   Tank carried an SE-14R.  Honestly in the role the character was in during the story I think he really should have been wearing black and not green, but those comics artists like to take their liberties and we get to benefit.  :)

  3. After years of searching for the 'perfect' green we gave in and ordered our line officers from cosplay sky.  We have 3 or 4 in the garrison now and they look good.  Yes a little lighter than the official uniforms from museum replicas, but when everyone has the same cosplaysky fabric together it looks just as good.

Edit: for a clear example see the middle of my sig pic.  :-)

  4. Carida just did an even to pose for pictures with black shelter animals to help them get adopted.  Was a feel good event all around, and with my background in animal rescue I was bummed that it was on the opposite end of the state from me.  :(

  5. My first uniform was custom tailored and is much better made than the 3 Cosplaysky uniforms that I have.  The cosplaysky uniforms are still decent, though.  The fabric tends to be lighter, but still works.  As your only uniform a cosplaysky might not last very long, but for me, with 12 costumes, it is not a big deal.  To get my Isard finished I actually bought and delivered fabric to them in the color I wanted and it feels much more solid like my original staff officer.  I might do that again for my next uniform I get through them.  It was definitely worth the extra cost to ship it to them.

If you can find an appropriate style of suiting fabric in the color you want you could still get cosplaysky to make the uniform for you if you provide the fabric yourself.  That is always an option if you cannot find a local tailor to do it. I think it cost me $30 or so to priority mail the fabric to their offices. The biggest issue is finding a tailor locally who can make a uniform from the ground up and tracking down the appropriate pattern for them to do so.  Of course local make means you can do test fittings during the process to avoid having serious rework at the end if it doesn't fit.

Cosplaysky's green isn't perfect, but it still makes a sharp looking uniform and given how hard it is to find the proper fabric, a number of line officers all in cosplaysky green still look pretty good.  :)

  6. Oh, one more question.  How do you sew in the modesty panel?  Do you have to go pick up fabric yourself and make it or is it made already and you just have to sew it in?

You can actually ask Cosplaysky to add this feature for you if you order from them.  Put the request in the Notes section along with all of your extra measurements.  They will usually do so for free as it is a very minor addition.  That way the color matches exactly.  You'll need to add two hook and eye closures to the collar, though, when you receive it.  Those are simple handsewing projects.  Be aware if you select a standard size instead of the Custom option, they will ignore any measurements that you give to them.

  7. Lots of people cheap out on boots and it is the worst thing you can do.  Some days you'll be standing 4+ hours for a troop and the last thing you want to do is be doing that in crappy boots.  :P  Sometimes full orthotic replacement insoles can rescue bad boots, but sometimes not enough.  The boots need to support you properly to avoid foot, leg and back pain.  My current officer boots ran me $500, primarily because they luckily had "standard" sizes large enough, though they had to actually produce my boots for me at the time it was not to custom specifications or I coudl have easily hit Ben's $800+ level.

  8. I just got my uniform and despite giving them all of the measurements mentioned above it´s still to large. It´s like they just pulled the standard xl sized from the shelf and shipped.

Important note:  If you choose a standard size and don't select "custom made" they will completely ignore any measurements that you include in your order and will make the standard size instead.  Is it possible you did that?  I've never had a problem with fit from them at all.

Of course as everyone says, cosplaysky is about making their customers happy so they will work with you if there are issues.  I am having my Isard remade because the fabric they used looked red in the sample photos, but in fluorescent and natural light turns bright orange.  Ummm...yeah not useful to me like that.  Hahahahaha.

  9. If the calf is too tight to get your foot through they are the wrong size.  Also ankle tightness cannot be changed as that is where the structure of the boot is and it cannot be stetched there effectively.  If you can get some boothooks to try and see if you can pull them on.  The two measurements with riding boots and boots like them that matter the most is the size of your calf at its widest point and the measurement around the top of the foot and the angle because that part of your foot has to fit through the narrow opening into the shoe itself and that part of the foot cannot compress.

When I bought my boots the vendor had extensive charts showing every size and width of the boots and all of the important measurements so I knew before I even got the boots that they would fit perfectly.  Of course that kind of support and detail is expected when you buying top end boots because no one else even considers carrying them in your size.  ;)

  10. Looks good.  Only neg I see is the shoulder flap for the tunic sticks up a little bit.  That can be helped by moving the lower snap pieces a bit further up the tunic so it stretches the flap more and holds it down.  :)

When wearing fit your belt a little higher and you will be awesome.  The smiles do settle once you get into the groove.  I still have issues marching at Star Wars weekends in open faced gear because I want to be smiling from ear to ear during the experience, especially when you hear little kids booing you because you are the empire.  Just makes me want to laugh out loud.  :D

One positive if the inside zipper is a bit tighter across your belly is that it actually will make you suck it in a little bit while suited up so you will have the proper chest puffed out look of an officer.  ;)

  11. Fold up suit/uniform bags don't work for me as my boots just won't fit in them.  I use a mid sized rolling suitcase.  Boots are the bottom layer, extra bits are placed between the boots and the uniform folded neatly on top.  Gives me plenty of space for everything and I don't need to change the bag I use if I switch to IN or IS either since the helmets will fit in the same bag. Also allows for extra space for things like boot hooks if you need them, or a boot jack to get your boots off after the troop is over too. Some people have much tighter boots than mine so those extras are even more important for them.  I started with a regular garment bag and carrying my boots separately, but that got old quickly and the garment bag was too flimsy to also hold boots in it without damaging the bag.

Only thing I transport differently is my TIE which I take in a solid plastic tote for protection.

  12. I generally nod to salutes unless a kid is really enthusiastic about it and then I will return the salute because ultimately it doesn't hurt anything and makes them happier.  :)

A Captain upgrade to Admiral is not that odd a possibility within the context.   Simple Vader promotion process.  Ozzel screws up and the fleet comes out of hyperspace too close to Hoth.  He gets choked and Piett goes from being in command of the Star Destroyer to being in command of the Fleet in one easy step.  His rank could already be higher than Captain, but since he was in command of the destroyer he was called "Captain" since it is his ship.  Who knows?  :)

Of course YMMV because we are dicussing a made up military from a set of movies.  :)

  13. Megan if you measure while you are seated the straps won't do much to hold down the pants in your boots.  Looks like you've already gotten some good responses. It is rather hit and miss because everyone has different body sizes/shapes.  I did a brainless move and just "assumed" the size of my straps was good and made the same sized straps for my IN dress uniform pants forgetting that the thrift store pants I had bought were about 4" shorter than normal length for me since they were going to be down in the boots anyway.  Didn't even think to try them on and the first troop I put them on the straps liked to have pulled my pants down.  Hahahahaha.

One thing I tried was the clip on stirrup straps that they sell to kids in military schools.  THOSE were a pain.  They would be on fine when I put them on and was standing, but as soon as I would bend my leg enough to get it into the boot one of the clips would immediately pop off.  :P

  14. If someone asks what you are or identifies you incorrectly a simple, "I am a _____________" statement with "staff/line officer" or "commander/general/rank" in the blank suffices just fine.  Not everyone is as anal about Star Wars as we are so won't always know what we are.  Nothing to really get too worried about.

  15. Be sure to order the deluxe version of the officer which is listed only in black.  They will make it olive or another color if you request though.  Two things on the cosplaysky unis is that the jodphur flares are often really big and as Ben said you can ask them to make them a little smaller, also for some reason when they put the hooks and eyes on for the collar they put the eyes on the privacy panel, but this can lead to the collar not sitting correctly when worn so moving the eyes to the opposite collar side is often a needed step so that the collar ends meet up properly.

The hook and eye problem is a quick matter of simple hand sewing to make happen.

Cosplaysky has been good about improving their officer and this is the 3rd incarnation of it to get it even closer to our requirements for approval.  I have 3 uniforms from them, and some other non-star wars related work as well and have been pleased with all of it.  :)

  16. Some of the pics the belt looks black.  In others it looks green.  Hrm... as for the rank bars it looks to me in that specific comparison between the officer and Kallus that the buttons are on some type of aluminum backing plate and then on the armor.  I am certainly hoping for a "generic" version of this character too.  If not then it will be keep the helmet on unless you've got the proper muttonchops.  :)

  17. ARGH she said she will modify the ISB costume assuming the new 501st arrangement.... and that's the result. Well, I'll spend time to explain ,this time. This costume can just go to thrash, seems like :(

I'll look carefully, but thanks for this first return! I would have never seen it!

I had a similar problem trying to get some of the new improvements to the officer incorporated into my ISB tunic.  In the end they had to completely redo it because what I was sent at the time was a standard line/staff officer tunic in cream.  There is a bit of a language barrier and before you just order another contact them and explain the situation and try to sort it out.   They remade mine in the correct style, with a privacy panel and hook closures on the collar of the ISB tunic which is what I had been trying to get done originally.  I did agree to pay for shipping to have the replacement tunic sent out.  I've found the folks at cosplaysky to be very accomodating and easy to approach with issues, so don't worry that it will be a bad experience.   :)

The ISB tunic does not have the shoulder flap on the front, as it goes straight across instead.  It also does not have code cylinder pockets either.  If you compare the ISB and Line or Staff officer CRLs with each other you'll find the differences.

We do need to work with cosplaysky to start getting the newer features added to the existing ISB tunic they make so that it is more accurate as well.

Edit: Helps to read the whole thread first.  Hahahahahaha  :D  In the end my new tunic for my ISB was right and it is approved and in my regular rotation of costumes.

  18. A consistently defined and usable system would be cool, but is tough to replicate from a source that never had a consistently defined and usable system to begin with.  :-)

There is a thread on the forums where BJ lists all of the rank bars seen on screen in the original films with some ranks included based on how the person wearing the bar was addressed.  That is really the best way to do it.  Just turn on the films, find scenes with officers in the uniform you are working on and pick a badge/cylinder combo to use.  I generally try to stick with something from the screen, but have also lived to the letter of the CRL a few times as well.  When I first got my 6 red tile general badge I wore it with my Staff officer because it was a single bar rank.  ;)  Never seen in the movies, but I wanted to use the thing when I first got it.  Now it pretty much stays on my line officer uniform unless I feel like a change in rank.  :)  I've never worn my ISB with anything other than 3 red/3blue on the rank bar and never will.  We've got 2 ISBs in the garrison and one of us wears 3 red/3 blue and the other wears 3 blue/3 red.

Edit:  BJ's onscreen rank list can be found here:

  19. With extra large calves often custom boots are really the only option available.  We have a new officer in our garrison.  She has small feet, but larger calves so paid $600 for custom made boots.  The end result is fantastic and was well worth the price for her, but your mileage may vary on cost.  :)

  20. Ok that makes a lot of sense, cosplaysky a good source?

Cosplaysky keeps improving.  Be sure to order the "deluxe" Imperial officer uniform and then specify the color your need if it is different from the listing.  They are not updating all of their uniform listings to the deluxe version for some reason, but they can be had in black, olive, red and white to cover different needs.  Also be sure to check out the Cosplaysky related sticky post at the beginning of this forum which provides a list of all the measurements you will want to send to them to make sure that the uniform you get back fits properly.  You can order a straight S, M, L or XL option, but the custom option providing all of these measurements works the best.

  21. I use standard tie tack type clutch pins, one near each end of the bar.  I haven't had a particular problem with magnets not holding, but quickly got tired with rotating rank bars.  Pins at each end mean once the bar is on it doesn't move at all.
