In this case, that is the rank worn by Moff Tarkin and it is on screen in ROTS.

Governor Pryce in Rebels wears the same rank plaque as Tarkin, but they are not the same rank, unless you count the two extra code cylinders he has.

Pryce's duties have taken her into space and onto other worlds and while she is not named "Moff", she sure has the duties of a "Moff" and answers to the Grand Moff....as well as the Emperor (who she visited all the first season).

  2. at least everything we saw on screen was given a name in Rogue One.  A lot of what we call ranks on the approved list comes from all over the place, not necessarily from Lucasfilm... but they did bless it back in the day.  I am certain that Pablo Hidalgo is trying for some grand unifying system, but Rebels will be the only vehicle that could give it to us.  I don't expect to see many officers in the Han Solo film as opposed to the one we just had.

  3. I generally try to tackle the rebel propaganda that is out there.

I remind them that the Emperor was elected chancellor and that when he declared himself emperor it was received with thunderous applause.
I remind them that nobody elected the Jedi and that they used their powers for haunting and mind control.

If they argue with me I ask them if they sided with the separatists, count Dooku and General Grevious.

At the end I remind them that there is only one detail worth remembering about the Jedi "that they are ALL DEAD.  EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THEM".  So you see, those people out there can't possibly be jedi.

  4. John Mollo tried to bring order to the rank system in the Empire Strikes Back.  There was a method to his madness with A New Hope, but it wasn't applied evenly due to costume troubles.  Some people had to put on the costume that fit them instead of the one that was intended for them.  That is why Motti wears a green uniform, when he was intended for another uniform.  Empire would be different.  There we would get a revamped rank system different from A New Hope that would make sense.

Called by name we KNOW what some ranks are from Empire: Admiral, General, Captain, Lieutenant.  And that is all we have.

Living in the real world we know that there are other ranks to be found and we try to fill them in... but they are not canon because they are only ever will be conjecture.

Mollo was and IS the most definitive authority on European military fashions of the past 500 years.  He was taken off of Star Wars and didn't participate in Return of the Jedi.  In that movie people either didn't wear ranks (for the black uniformed officers) or they wore the rank of a captain (for the green uniforms).  Jejerrod and Piett are the only two officers that have names.  Jejerrod is called "commander", though novels and other sources list him as a moff.  The reason why there is no differentiation in rank is that no one cared... sadly.  The man who cared was not on the project.

5 years after Jedi, West End Games tried to make sense of the Imperial Ranks from Empire with the Imperial Source Book.  The included conjecture ranks like "Colonel" and "Commander" and "Major".  But none of that is canon.

  5. According to John Mollo, he intended for Motti to wear a cream tunic and black pants.  He intended it to be the uniform of a Air Service... except what he had didn't fit Richard LePalmatier.  So he got a green uniform like General Tagge.  Only one guy wore what he termed the "Air Service" branch.  In 1995, the Decipher card company that sold the Star Wars Customizable Card Game identified the officer wearing the uniform as Colonel Yularen and that he was a member of the ISB.    Dave Filoni saw the same guy and thought he was some kind of Grand Admiral.  That is why he included him in The Clone Wars television series.  But with Rebels, the ISB is a canon part of the Star Wars universe.

All that being said.  Before the advent of the Starfleet when the Empire was still the republic, the forces of the Republic came from the Judicial Branch.  Their uniforms were the same as those worn by Imperial Officers 30 years later around the time of the Battle of Yavin, but they were senatorial Blue.

This blue color would be worn by many senators, senate guards, senate police and investigators and the officer corp that made up the judicial branch.  Yularen came from the judicial branch as did Admiral Screed.

Prior to the start of the Clone Wars, the Chancellor changed the senatorial guards that wore blue to the Royal guards that wore red with a modified version of their uniforms.  I wonder if when this happened, the remnants of the Judicial Branch of the Senate turned their uniforms red and became Imperial Intelligence.

And Imperial Intelligence is VERY separate from the ISB.  The two should not be confused.  The ISB is a very ideological organization that roots out descent.  Imperial Intelligence is more concerned with gathering information.

  6. Grand General Tagge appears in the Darth Vader series of comics.  He has been Retconned in the new canon as leaving the Death Star before it was destroyed.  Vader takes the blame for its destruction and Tagge gets promoted to Grand General and put over top of Vader by the Emperor.

Tagge wears straight pants, not breaches and he wears black dress shoes, not riding boots in the panels of the comic.  There was an officer in the Death Star control room dressed this way...a high ranking officer with no hat on in the film.  The Tagge family played bigger role in the old Marvel comics series back in the 1970s.  It was a wealthy and noble family that controlled a number of industrial interests.  General Tagge's family was run by his older brother who was a Baron.  I think they intend to bring that dynamic back to the comics.

As for the title of "Grand General".... it is a bit asinine.  The title "Grand Admiral" used by Timothy Zahn used the German Kriegsmarine (navy) rank.  It's army equivalent was Field Marshal.  I can't think of any major armed forces that had the title of "Grand General".  It shows that they didn't do their homework or try to find out the origins of the famous Timothy Zahn title.

  7. It is the fabric that makes this so expensive, the fabric.  $50 a yard

    http://www.britexfabrics.com/fabric/wool-fabric/mid-light-weight-wool/midweight-classic-khaki-wool-cavalry-twill.html

Color aside, this is the fabric they will use for the Premier line.  That is 100% wool, just like the ones worn by the Imperial Germans in their Cavalry units 100 years ago.

I know some people that got to inspect Tarkin's pants.  They came away saying that there was no difference between them and the material used by German army.

So that is $250- $300 for material right off the top.  That doesn't count interfacing and lining.  And the uniform is pretty complicated to begin with.

  8. It's a good book, but not organized very well.  It is a bit all over the place with how it arranges information.  It lifts some stuff from the original West End Games source books.  If you can get your hands on any of those books they were the ones that described the differences between the Army and the Navy as well as taking a stab at describing the black uniformed people in the films.  In those books they called those that wore the black Battlestation Operations.

It was the DK visual companion that first stated that black uniforms were Stormtrooper officers.

The first time we see a trooper out of the armor and wearing a cloth uniform was The Clone Wars Season 6 4th Episode: Fugitive.  The guy in the center here is a corporal.  The uniform is from that time period, though the hats are not the same as those used by officers in Revenge of the Sith.
