Clones kept doing it after the war.

    The clones saluted old commanders.

    The rebels would offer salutes.

    Imperial officers would offer salutes.

    Imperial pilots would offer salutes.

The First Order would ju....... you might want to use your discretion with this one.

Opened up some books on customs and courtesies.  While there are minor differences between armed services and services across the world, many of the same basics are the same.  I'll offer some here and if you know some, please share what you know.We have a number of prior military people here that know it better than any book.

Not just Prior service a lot of currently serving (18 years in and still loving it) our Outpost has a large number of service personal the Troop on Saturday was 2 Navy and 2 Army 501st members. You are right in saying all military's salute the way and style differ but the mark of respect still remains.

The curious case of Colonel Yularen.  First named in 1995 for the card game.  The card game decided that the white uniforms were ISB, an organization first named in the West End Games Imperial Sourcebook.

This guy was never meant to have a name with a simpler costume than Tarkin, Tagge or Motti, he was meant to be seen from the background.  The style of uniforms were intended to be of an Imperial "air force" variety that Motti would wear, but the actor couldn't  fit into it.

Fast forward to 2008 when Dave Filoni decides to use the character in the Clone Wars animation.  He briefly thought this was a Grand Admiral and decided to have Anikan's personal admiral to be this guy.  Until Filoni realized too late that he would later be a colonel.  Oh well, Filoni said he would make it work... and he did.

There are not a lot of names used in the original trilogy. Governor Tarkin is named, but none of the other officers by name in the film.  They would get names in the novelization like Cass, Romodi and Tagge.  With Romodi taking Motti's lines in the film.  They didn't even have ranks properly assigned to them.

In 1978, there would be an attempt to expand on Tagge by showing his family in the marvel comics run.  The general's family would own a wealthy business conglomerate and his elder brother would even  be a Baron that would spar with Darth Vader.

The first real delving into who they were came about in 1988 with West End Game's first expansions to their popular role playing games.  The character profiles from A New Hope would give backgrounds on who they were, their ranks and what they did.

The rank and name game would take off in 1995 with Decipher's Star Wars customizable card game.  For the first time ever,  everyone was given a name.  Near everyone was given a rank.  If it was a person, ship, location or piece of equipment, it was made into a card.  Tarkin, Motti and Tagge would appear, but now we had Chief Bast, Colonel Yularen, Captain Kurghee Commander Praji and others.

This was awesome because we got background and story that has continued to today.  The problem was, there was no attempt to make sense of the rank structure when they assigned ranks.  At the time Lucasfilm really didn't care.  This was all part of the marking plans to bring Star Wars back... and what would be brought back would not be original trilogy, but prequels... so who cares right?

The thing is, the cards immediately contradicted one another.
Commander Daine Jir is listed as a commander.

All the others of the same rank are called Lieutenants.

But that is also the danger of calling someone "commander"  Tagge is called commander, Praji, Igar and many others... all with different rank bars.

But this was the start.... it became something that immediately entered into all of the visual guides.  It quickly started to be adopted by authors everywhere.  Moreover, Lucasfilm started to note there was a story behind every name and going forward, instead of someone else naming these characters, it would come directly from Lucasfilm.

This is a cool thread!  I never quite grasped before that the names of many background characters weren't named until the games and books came out.  Now I noticed the modern movies try to give every background character a name beforehand, and Lucasfilm seems to be trying to make sure the First Order ranks are consistent.

they come from the a branch of the imperial government organizational chart in the West End Games Role playing game.  But they got the white uniforms in the card game.  And then people started to add to them as time went on.

So see, not everyone knows everything. As long as everyone is open to collaboration I think this is going to be a huge hit!
I think citing the source (like I just did) is a great idea. Name of the source (comic, show, movie, book, etc.) year it was published, maybe who published it (dark horse comics, del rey books, marvel comics, etc.)
