there is some deep jealousy against Hux by some older officers.  He has advanced far beyond their station when they have served longer.  They think it is because of his family, but all of them got to where they are because of their connections (and Hux did kill his father).  Hux is over them because of his performance and his service to Snoke.  Abuse him as he does, even Kylo Ren recognizes his utility.  Otherwise he would have got rid of Hux as soon as he took control and installed one of the older yes men.

I didn't see him as an idiot at all. I saw him underappreciated but rather capable, and frustrated by being underappreciated. He clearly doesn't like Kylo Ren and feels himself superior (and in some ways, he's right), which just adds to his frustration.

I also don't really see him as despised by other officers, but maybe I'll need to rewatch it with that in mind.

Snively is a matter of opinion.  Hux was effective in what he achieved.  He wasn’t a master tactician but a person that used emerging technologies to change the game.  Destroying an entire Star system and everything in it from across the galaxy is a game changer.  Tracking ships through hyperspace was a game changer. Leveraging new methods is a way to win, and winning gets you recognition.

The old old guard who lost the war against the rebellion may look like they had better military bearing but that didn’t win the war, nor did they spawn ideas to beat the republic.

History is filled with brilliant military leaders that didn’t fit what the expectation was for how a leader should look.

There is a difference between Hux being a fool and him being humiliated by someone else.  You come into close proximity of dark force wielders you can end up humiliated (Hux, Motti, Jejerrod) or you end up dead (Ozzel, Needa, Tagge).  Hux isn’t dead because he is of great use.

And I don’t think he will forget the humiliations he suffered and will get revenge for them.

Starkiller base was his baby.  That is why he got to give the speech to the troops.  They crushed the head of the republic government and destroyed their fleet.  The First Order swept in and took control of key systems with little resistance, blitzkrieging across the galaxy.  Even Leia was stunned when no one came to help.  The resistance has also been reduced to a few people in the hold of a single YT-1300 freighter.

Who could do all of this?  Armitage Hux.

Yup, it seems to be linked to rank. For example the Captains and Majors seem to have them, didn't manage to spot them on any other ranks just yet. In addition, the Black Series FO Captain figure, and Finn in disguise (he is in a Captain uniform) have these tabs. The Hux figure for TLJ, does not. Unsure on Rose, if someone can confirm?
Waiting for the Bluray to come out to confirm further.  As @Tutanchseth says its -very- reminiscent of Krennic's boot tabs, along with the pointed jodhpur flares there are a lot of links to his costume in TLJ!

the old visual guide said that.
West End Game's RPG called them "battle station operations".

The costume designer for Rogue One and the Solo movie calls them "security services".  They seem to be more skilled than your average stormtrooper as they do all sorts of things.  If we see them in any armor like that of Veers, it is going to be a definite nope.

I am excited for the movie.

That facebook page belongs to Antje Walzel she is a master seamstress. She is also a member of the IOC ID 36663. I have seen some of her work and it is awesome but I do not think that she does mail orders. As far as I know her costumers visit her and she takes their measurements. Her costumers also come back for test fittings.

according to Glyn Dillon he said the black uniforms are the "security forces".  As he is the costume designer for this movie, I expect more of the same.  At least he is proceeding with that nomenclature.  We DO have a new mustached line officer rank with a single bar 4 blue, 2 red.  Who knows if he will have a speaking part.

This is my proposed CRL originally posted in the Spec Ops forums under the Imperial Army sub-forum for the original trilogy Battlefront II Officer (link). Since this character falls into both detachments - the character is part of the Imperial Army but is also a junior officer - I think it's a good idea to post it here as well. Perhaps it'll be an dual-detachment CRL.

    Required Costume Components
The following costume components are present and appear as described below.

    Helmet
    For 501st approval:

I think we should try to keep CRLs as simple as possible. We are an international costume club and not everyone understands English on the same level. I think if there is enough interest in the different versions of this costume there should be separate CRLs for the TFA, BF2 and TLJ versions.

Question: Can't the CRL for the darkgrey/charcoal FO-uniform just be handled as easy as this:

    Basic Approval: All FO-Captains, Lieutenants/Commanders
Level 2: you can optionally go for the movie-uniform or for the Battlefront 2-uniform
Level 3: specific face-characters (which would cover all the Hask's, Peavey's, Mitakas and others with this tunic)

    ???

This is how it was done before with the imperial officers and it works

Hi there, I'd like to make these requested changes:

    Tunic II, Red
    For 501st approval:

    • Tunic II, replaces Tunic, listed above.
    • Similar to the Tunic, with the following differences.
    • Standing collar, open, no modesty panel.
    • Front opening lies hidden beneath a bib or flap.
    • Bib/flap is closed at one side with snap buttons.
    • Bib/flap lower section hangs loose, and is roughly 4 cm longer than
the rest of the Tunic II.
    • No code cylinder pockets.
    • No parting seams in front.
    • (2) Darts point up from the waist seam, hidden under the bib/flap.

Based on her portrait from the New Essential Guide to Characters

I added a front opening under the flap/bib part to make the jacket wearable. This seemed the most suble way to me to get an opening in without altering much of the design.

I started off by using chalk holders.  Philo hadn't started yet and finding a real honest to goodness british style dosimeter required luck and money.  I work in the nuclear industry and we knew that was a diminishing limited supply not easily available.  I now own five real ones with a calibration device, but it was more luck than good searching that allowed me to find it.

Eliminating chalk holders would be a very limiting thing.

    Hi all,

new to the IOC, not so new anymore to the 501st. I have to armor/bucket costumes I am extremely happy with and working on my ANH TK at the moment. I would however like to also have an officer costume, simply cause they look awesome.
My preference goes to the Lieutenant Lyste costume, not high ranking, not extremely outstanding or special, but I really like his cap
Yes, that is all why I intend to go for his costume.

Being based in EU I would like it if you can give me suggestions on where to get fabric, who potentially makes a good, approvable animated officers costume. The hat I intend to make in collaboration with Nikki Powers.

My initial idea is to sew everything myself, with the never ending support of my awesome wife, who is brilliant with a sewing machine.

Any help, tips or pointers what to be aware of, look out for etc. while making an animated costume are more than welcome!

btw, I am in no hurry to do this fast btw, I plan to take my time, calmly research everything as I still have plenty of work to do on my TK and my son's shore trooper (at 80% of full size)

    Afternoon all!

After running this past the tailoring and First Order knowledge of @rattleandburn, @Tentayena and @DarkJedi, I think we're in a really solid place with this draft!
I took the CRL draft provided on  page three of this thread by @Tutanchseth and used it as a base to build on. A lot of the structure and highlighted changes were  highlighted there, so I elaborated, standardised where I could, and ensured the text was as accurate and technically correct/worded correctly as I could. @rattleandburn was a huge help there for technical wording.
While working on this draft, a few standardisation issues across all First Order officer CRL's either currently available or in the works were highlighted, but we can discuss those elsewhere.
    Without further ado:

    --------------------------------------------

First Order Major and Colonel CRL Draft:

    Hair and facial appearance
    For 501st approval:

If hair is worn short, it should not extend past the top of the collar at the back of the neck.
If hair is long, it should be neat and worn up in a military bun. Hair should also be kept neatly tied back away from the face.
    Costumer is clean shaven.
If the costumer is wearing makeup, it should be subtle and appear “natural”.

Note: I’m adding apprarance guidelines for generic officers because I believe officers should be neat and tidy/presentable. Possible character specifics for Kaplan and Datoo have been given below for those looking to specifically portray those officers:

    Colonel Datoo:
    Costumer is clean shaven.
Very short, neat, greying (???) hair. Either the costumer’s own hair or a suitable hair appliance such as a wig.

    Colonel Kaplan:
    Costumer is clean shaven.
No visible hair, either through removal of costumer’s own hair or through suitable bald cap application.

    Tunic, First Order Major, Teal
    For 501st approval:

Fabric is a medium weight suiting material exactly matching the pants.
Fabric is a medium-dark blue with notable green tones similar to ‘peacock blue’ or specifically ‘blue teal’
Fabric is twill, gabardine style weave is most accurate.
Tunic is fitted to the wearer.
Tunic is double-breasted and has a left over right closure. It ends atop the right seam as seen in reference pictures. The fastenings for this closure should be completely hidden.
The top edge of the front closure continues downward from the left-hand side of the collar in a 45 degree angle across the upper chest where it fastens into place.
The collar is not separated from the front panels, nor the back, by a seam. The only seam is that which follows through from the shoulder seam to the neck, separating front and back of tunic.
Collar is draped so that it lies neatly against the neck, snugly fitting, with no noticeable bend or wrinkle. Overlap of collar portions is at a noticeable angle, forming a visible V-shape at the center throat - no rounded shape.
Sleeves are long, and without decoration, folded cuffs or buttons. A visible seam line separates the sleeve from the straight cuff portion, which is approximately 4.5 - 5.5”.
There are two vertical seams - straight princess seams - running the full length of the garment, on both front and rear of the tunic. These seams meet each other at the shoulder seam, approximately halfway between the neck and the sleeve seam.
Tunic has a waist seam spanning the full circumference of the waist, hidden by the belt.
The tunic does not feature epaulets, a center-back seam, nor a First Order insignia patch.
There should be no visible hems or top-stitching on the sleeves, collar, tunic opening or along the bottom of the tunic.
For level two certification (if applicable):
Tunic is fully lined in a suitable colour.

Jodphur Trousers, First Order Major, Teal
    For 501st approval:

Fabric is a light to medium weight suiting material exactly matching the tunic.
Flared jodhpurs have sharply pointed, semi-stiff flares in the hip/thigh area, below the tunic and above the knee. The shape of the flared pants at the thighs should be slightly rectangular as per reference images. This flare should follow the flare of the bottom of the tunic. This angle should not change.
Pockets and waist belts are acceptable, although should not be visible with the tunic on.
Stirrups may be attached to the leg bottoms to keep material tightly tucked into the boots
The fabric below the knee should remain fitted to the leg and tuck tightly into the boots.

    Officer Boots, First Order, Black
    For 501st approval:

Knee-high, black, lace-less, smooth non-textured, leather or leather-like material, with moderate to high-gloss shine.
Rubber rain boots or wellington boots are not acceptable.
PVC or synthetic material is allowed as long as it gives the appearance of leather.
There are no stretch panels, buckles, snap tabs, or decoration.
Boot seams must closely match screen-used boots.
Boots have conservative or no heels at all. Flat soles are most accurate.
If zippers are present, they appear on the inner part of the boot shaft only.
The toe of the boot is rounded, not in a square, rounded, or pointed style
The top of the boots are flat style, not Spanish, Cowboy, or Superhero.

For level two certification (if applicable):
Boots have a zipper on the inner shaft.
Soles are flat, similar to FO TK and TI soles.
Seams and design must match screen-used boots.
     Gloves, First Order, Black
    For 501st approval:

Gloves are constructed of a non-textured, black leather or leather-like material.
    Enclosed fingers.
Gloves are gauntlet length, fitted, and worn underneath the sleeves.
    No buckles, straps, etc.
Gloves may have stitching detail on the back of the palm similar to First Order Lieutenant for basic approval.
    Belt, First Order
    For 501st approval:

The belt is constructed from a black, non-textured leather or a leather-like material.
Approximately 2-2.5" in width, by 4.5-5” in length is acceptable. Belt band is not at all wider than buckle.
Belt must fit snugly over the natural waist of the wearer.
There are no loops on the belt.
No sizing holes should be visible.
The buckle is constructed from a horizontally brushed metal, or metal-looking material.
Buckle is free of decoration, greeblies or insignia.
    Buckle is rectangular, with sharp-angled edges, approximately 5 1/4" (13.3 cm) long & 2 1/2 high (6.35 cm).

For level two certification (if applicable):
    Belt is made of leather.
Buckle is made of a brushed metal such as aluminium.
Buckle has a slight horizontal curve.
    Rank Insignia, First Order
    For 501st approval:

Rank consists of one black band sewn down to the sleeve with white piped/embroidered edges at the top and bottom.
Aurebesh text dependant on rank is to be embroidered, hand sewn, or applied via vinyl transfer to the center of the band. The text options are:
    “Tarkin” for Major
    “Kaplan” for Colonel
Bar should be worn on the left side of arm, just above the wrist cuff seam and below the elbow.
It should be invisibly stitched down to the sleeve in full, or adhered securely using iron-on patch adhesive. The bar should not appear loose.
Major and Colonel costumes do not have a First Order emblem patch on their sleeves.

For level two certification (if applicable):

Aurebesh text is machine embroidered in white thread matching the edge piping/embroidery discussed above.
    First Order Officer Hat, Teal
    For 501st approval:
The hat's brim is a black leather, or leather-like material protruding from the front bottom of the dome. It is slightly curved in shape and does not obscure the wearer's eyes.
The dome fits snugly on the head when worn and should cock slightly back like a baseball cap.
It is fitted to the head and does not cover the ears.
There is a tall flap which runs around the back of the hat, snugly fitting around the dome at the back and at both sides.
The flap piece is not higher than the dome of the hat, and does not overly flex outward. It is effectively vertical in respect to the rest of the hat, and when viewed from the side, it's edges are tilted slightly back at an angle.
The First Order emblem is centered in the front of the hat's dome. It is black and silver. The silver areas should have a metallic finish.
The hat is made of the same teal fabric as the tunic and pants, with suitable interfacing or buckram as to give it the correct shape and stiffness.
The dome has a subtly curved seam separating the front panel from rest of the hat, with a similar seam on the back section of the dome, with one vertical seam running down the dome's back.
For level two certification (if applicable):
First Order insignia is a silver/nickel metal pin with a slight brushed finish and black enamel paint. It should be centered in the front of the hat's dome. It is approx 1 1/2" wide & 1 3/4" tall.
The hat’s brim is leather. Its finish matches that seen in reference images.
Hat features topstitching on either side of seams on the side and back panels of the hat as well as on the panels at the seam where they meet the dome, but not upon the dome itself. The front dome features top-stitching only at the lower edge where it meets the brim.
    Optional Accessories
Items below are optional costume accessories. These items are not required for approval, but if present appear as described below.
     Officer's Blaster, First Order
    For 501st approval:

    ·        Based on a replica Glock 19 repeating pistol, scratch-built with added greeblies, or a modified commercial replica is acceptable.
    ·        Details to be painted black and silver per reference photos.

Yes.  Keeping them here is ideal.  They still use all the other officer accessories (rank bars, code cylinders, same tunic and trousers).

One of the big problems I had with Galactic Marines moving to Blizzard Force is that half the pieces to make the things were heavily researched and had vendors available at CTN (because they were Clone parts).

The LMO team is right on this one.  No need to send people to ACD to try to make this costume and then just get people pointed back here to build 90% of it.  This is a really good jumping off point to add another standard accessory to multiple costumes for us as well.  More options means more people doing the version of the costume that tickles their fancy.  Hopefully we can see some black versions of this as well (one can dream).

Veers to ACD made sense.  From a pure military point of view, ACD (Armored CAVALRY Detachment - emphasis on the second word) Veers was commanding the Empire's "Cavalry" - AT-AT and AT-ST walkers.

Thrawn, Price and Tarkin are not commanding Cavalry.  They are effectively Generals on the field.  And a General is a commanding OFFICER.

Tarkin is an Officer if he's in armor for field work or bunny slippers because he doesn't like the feel of his boots.  Sorry, but I'll ride and die on that hill, "feelings" be damned.

I'm making inquiries to see if we can rustle things along. Regardless of if they looked at an AT-AT one time, officers in armour are -Officers- in armour. We've got Rebels cadets with helmets, Kallus in his gear (who pilots a lot more vehicles than the other higher ranking dudes). Put a different hat on an officer, especially a high ranking face character officer, it's still an officer.

Battlefront 2 also have armoured officers kicking it with deathstar troopers http://battlefront.wikia.com/wiki/Imperial_Officer/DICE so there's scope to adding armour to staff and line officers too.

At the very least though, additions to Pryce/Thrawn/Tarkin (would we need a Rebels Tarkin?? urghh)

buckrogersbarker got a reaction from trencher in John Mollo's Passing
Just received word of the passing of John Mollo, the costume designer of Star Wars, The Empire Strikes Back, ALIEN and a bunch of other movies.  The word came from the owner of Starwarshelmets.com on the RPF.

John Mollo created the costumes we wear here, most of all, the imperial officer uniform.  He was the formost authority on European Military Fashions of the last 500 years and could tell you not just the configuration of the uniforms, but the purpose behind them.  He wrote the definitive text on the subject.  He will be deeply deeply missed.
