  1. I have purchased two uniforms from CosplaySky (Line Officer and Staff Officer).

I have purchased an Museum Replicas Line Officer.

I'm in the process of purchasing an Officer uniform from Clothears.

I did research purchasing a Line Officer costume through a professional tailor (produces outfits for musicians and tv).

My experiences with Clothears are through the purchase of my girlfriends Boushh costume.

    CosplaySky

    Pros

    Lower price, and great value

    Changes and repairs maybe possible.

    Quick turnaround.

    Cons

Costumes sizes seem to vary. Will require custom tailoring, unless you're incredibly lucky.

Communication is a little awkward due to a language barrier.

    Cheaper, less accurate material.

Less attention to detail - though they will perform bespoke alterations as long as you're very clear with your instructions

    Museum Replicas

    Pros

    Communication is good

High quality of material, had access to the original costume

    High attention to detail

The pricing is fair for the quality of material.

    Cons

    No longer produce the costume

The costume is in standard sizes, no deviation from their standard packages

    Returns are possible

There's a waiting list (approx 6 months), but this is communicated up front and an estimated start date is given

Though I had to spend almost the same amount again with customs fees and bespoke tailoring (about three times the cost of CosplaySky in the end). I was unlucky and due to the CRL requirements I had to go to an experienced tailor to have the jacket taken in - required taking the jacket apart and reassembling it. They did comment it wasn't as well made as my CosplaySky jacket - though the material was superior.

    Clothears

    Pros

The costume is made to measure

Changes and repairs are handled very professionally

    Communication is spot on

High quality of material, exact materials used in the original costumes where possible

    High attention to detail

The pricing is fair for the quality of material, research and time taken to produce the costume (double the price of CosplaySky - after alterations)

    Cons

There's a waiting list (approx 6 months), but this is communicated up front and an estimated start date is given

    Bespoke tailor

    Pros

The costume is made to measure

Changes and repairs are handled very professionally

    Communication is spot on

High quality of material, exact materials used in the original costumes where possible

    High attention to detail

    Cons

The pricing is high, paying for someone not familiar with the costume, who would be producing it as a one off (double the price of Clothears)

The choice is personal really. It's down to how accurate you want your uniform. CosplaySky are great for Staff Officers if you can source a good hat. Museum Replicas were great for Line Officers. Personally I believe Clothears is the way forward for high costumes, once she cracks the colour of the Line Officer costume - if she hasn't already.

  2. It depends on the size of the buttons. I haven't seen either of these buttons in person, to me the dimensions sound a little large.

I swear by the push buttons, I believe they are more accurate - and look smarter, though I was lucky to get enough when they were more readily available. But this depends on size, if the proportions are wrong I'd recommend acrylic.

  3. I was discussing the officer uniform on another forum - when Peter Briggs a screenplay writer who's currently developing Panzer 88 with Gary Kurtz made this comment:

"I remember that John Mollo told me that his intent with the "Black Officers" was to make them Vader's personal troops…they were Vader's very own "SS". I was surprised at that, as I always assumed they were simply a standard Imperial rank. Likewise, John told me that the white/cream uniformed guy in the Death Star conference was modeled after Goering, and he was meant to be a sort of Air Field Marshall of the Imperial Fleet. John took his job very seriously. I think it showed!"

I couldn't think where to put it, but I thought it was worth sharing, for those who hadn't heard it.

  4. I originally started with a CosplaySky cap, at first I couldn't sell what all the fuss was about ... then I stood next to an officer in an accurate cap. My cap didn't look quite right, so I purchased the material separately and hunted down someone to make me a custom cap - it wasn't easy but I can provide you their details if you wish to go down that route.

Before you even think about whether the material is good or not, the shape itself is wrong, from what I can see the main faults are:

    It's one size fits all

The main part of the cap is cylindrical, the top of the cap should be narrower - so the cap is more trapezoid in shape

The peak is too big, this fault is compounded by the fact the cap sits wrong on the head

The cap on the left is a CosplaySky cap, the cap on the right was custom made using CosplaySky material:

Due to the cap being cylindrical it doesn't sit on your head properly.

CosplaySky, not bad when you're on your own - the main trick is to look miserable ;)

But when you troop with others, who have accurate caps, it doesn't quite hold up:

Here is what my custom cap looks like:

This is what you're aiming for:

Saying all this, if you wearing a black uniform there are plenty of good cap makers (sadly CosplaySky isn't one). The problem I had is that I was going with the Olive Drab uniform, and I'm a bit of a perfectionist.

These are just my opinions, I'd recommend checking out a couple of pictures from vendors, and compare them against what you see in the film. You interpret the caps differently to me :)

    Hope this helps, good luck.

  5. I paid £107 for 2 Type A dosimeters ... and a charger. I thought £50 was a high but standard price. If you consider how much you'd pay for a replica, I thought it was acceptable ... though I was a bit gutted when it jumped from £47 to £107 21 seconds before the auctioned ended.

  6. From a personal point of view I'd say it's not impossible. But you have to look at the economy, and accuracy. You can get a reasonably accurate costume from CosplaySky, for a great price. It's possible to improve on this - but how much would that cost you. You need to find patterns and experiment. Would you spend more money experimenting and perfecting your costume? Can you afford the time and money? You have a degree of time, so you could do it. If you pulled it off, you'd have a uniform to be proud of and a better set of skills - everyone's got to start somewhere.

  7. Whilst looking for an actors name for Hurst Romodi - bald officer with orange rank in the boardroom scene - I found a high resolution picture of Chief Bast - with another blue haze over his right pocket dosimeter. This has got to prove his second dosimeter is the standard officer blue tipped dosimeter and not alternative dosimeter.

I know I need to get a life ;) I think it's Leslie Schofields impressive sideburns - I think he's a great officer - right up there with Julian 'General Veers' Glover.

  8. When you said you'd "be happy to buy these to forward on," what exactly does that entail, Phil? Did you mean like what Strongbow was talking about? If so, I might be interested in doing something like that, as long as the process is not too complicated.

Yes, I'd buy them (only 2 left now), get them delivered to me then post them to you. You'd pay the original cost, then a second amount for my postage costs. I wouldn't add any extra, but it'd be something like an additional £3-5.

It'd be cheaper to get the guy to relist them for international customers and purchase them directly, but if this isn't an option I'd assist

  9. I've seen one of the UKG officers (who inspired me to get an officer uniform) uses the Lobot hand gesture, as an indication to move, after quietly ordering troopers to form up. That worked quite nicely.

When I'm at a large event and with a squad I loudly ask the troopers to form up, then march. When I get to a suitable place to stop, I order them to secure the area.

  10. I thought the hat sizing was down to different head sizes, though the peek was raised or lowered for different actors ... though I could be wrong. Now you say it ANH and ESB do look a little different. People have always said ANH jackets have a taller neck than RotJ.

  11. Does not Veers have eight concentric lines stitched on the bill of his cap, or am I seeing wrong?

According to the CRL, they must only be six or seven and they have only been six or seven on other caps that I have seen.

Edit: Found large scan of the Veers picture on Flickr. They are eight!

Piett has two darts from the neck of his jacket. There are a few inconsistencies with the CRL, but the CRL is based on the typical officer - and designed to standardise the look of officer uniforms.
