  1. My British accent is quite good ... though I am English, so that helps a lot ;)

I'm not brilliant at emulating accents but what I do is try and identify the differences in how the people pronounce the different words. Pick a word that's particularly strong sounding e.g. a Northern Irish friend of mine has a strong accent, he pronounces tower as tar so you take the word and try and see what makes it different. Then you can try applying those rules to other words.

I'd say pick an actor you like and try emulate their voice. Don't pick Sean Connery whilst British he's Scottish and they have a strong accent of their own, also avoid Manchester (pop group Oasis), Liverpool (Beatles), London (Blur or Michael Caine) which have strong regional accents. The stereotype British officer is upper class, and educated, as such no matter where they're from they are taught to pronounce their words correctly, without accent - which actually becomes an accent in itself.

I'd suggest watching British war films and listen to the officers, or costume dramas and listen to the rich people, or any of the TV Agatha Christie episodes.

Actors who have good accents Christopher Lee, Ian McKellen (Lord of the Rings), Hugh Grant and Colin Firth (in Love Actually), Rupert Everett (he does plenty of period dramas), Richard Attenborough (Miracle of 34th Street), Patrick McNee (the Avengers)

To be honest I'd find it hard emulating their accents, but you'll get the idea of how you're trying to sound.

My trooper American accent is pretty bad, I just end everything with sir and maam.

    Hope this helps.

AVOID THE DICK VAN DIKE ACCENT

  2. I was lucky enough to get my hat cleared, I have a large head, so that may have helped ... but I really loath it, it's terrible. In my mind the cap should tapper in at the top, so in two dimensions it looks like a trapezoid /_\ The CosplaySky hat looks more like a rectangle |_|

I'm in the process of replacing it, having got some extra material and found someone willing to make a cap with someone elses material.

I'm on the left, with pure CosplaySky. My girlfriend is in the middle with CosplaySky uniform and Museum Replicas cap, and the guy on the right is wearing pure Museum Replicas.

  3. I've really enjoyed my limited trooping experience as an officer.

Because no one seemed to be that interested in taking a photograph of me I hung back from the troopers and patrolled the perimeter. When the troopers moved I marched in front of them.

I maintained a look of total contempt for everyone around especially when I had my photograph taken - though I made sure I smiled and thanked the photographer after, to prove I was human.

I was pleased that people immediately understood I was in character. For me as a green officer I didn't have any props - so I used my disapproving look as my prop.

  4. When I was at university I did scuba diving, once we had our fins (flippers) on we were advised to walk backwards to get into the water ... this costume would make for an odd trooping experience, I assume you wouldn't be wearing the fins

  5. I've bought some Stephens Dosimeters recently, there seem to be a number of different models. Mine have a 'brass' clip, but don't have the gap in the horizontal part of the clip, oddly these do but are silver.

I had to add the blue tip on the top, a fellow garrison member managed to get similar dosimeters - with the correct clip, but also needing the extra bit on the top.

I was tempted to bid on these to get the right clip, but I don't want to get in a bidding war with someone from here.

  6. I know my wallet is quite fat, sadly with junk and cards in it as opposed to money, and I have a few keys on my key ring.

Why don't you put your unnecessary keys in your car and only carry your car key, and only carry the cash / cards you need, then you could wear a money belt. You wouldn't need to alter your costume - potentially ruining the accuracy, wouldn't bulge in the wrong places or make a noise with your the jangling of your keys.

    Just a thought.

  7. I just got some Saia Burgess rectangular lens for 16mm switches (manufacturers part number red = TH461412000, blue = TH461312000, orange = TH461612000).

All in all they measure 19mm by 13mm. In my humble opinion they look spot on.

This is TK Lee 's original post from 2007, they are a £1 each and come in packs of 5, very easy to use and look awesome!!

There easy to make,, here are some I made...

    impy-rank-pips.jpg

All you need is some 2mm (or close) thick aluminium, and the pips, these are available from RS ( http://uk.rs-online.com/web/ )

Now these lenses are 2 part, a opaqe white inner and the clear coloured lense bit,, remove the opaqe part cut off it's legs then superglue this part to the metal backing at the appropriate distances. leave the glue to dry plus leave it a day for all the superglue vapour to go, then just clip the coloured lenses back on in the right order. If you clip them on to soon after sometimes the glue vapour will mist up the lenses and they look icky.

I'm not sure about the orange, but 'RS online' no longer stock the blue lens. 'Camis Components' stock the red and blue. With the original manufacturers part numbers you maybe able to source an American supplier, as these are UK based.
