  1. Unfortunatly there is no master reference page to find all the level specific details. The CRL is the basic reference page for the basic requirements. If you want to get more accurate details they would be more based on your specific character and not just the basic requirements.

I have been working on a costume break of the main officers in the original trilogy. This is a long process as I have to watch the film numerous times, freeze framing. I then try to find the actor and character name (very few are credited in the film). So far I have done ANH I'm currently working on ESB.

    http://www.imperialofficer.com/forum/index.php?/topic/4698-officer-uniform-configuration/

My usual recommendation is watch the film yourself, identify an officer you like and build your uniform around what you see them wearing. The simplest Staff Officer is Lieutenant Chilsden.

  2. From my study of the films. The belts are different in each of the classic Trilogy films. Personally, I think it would excellent if you could replicate the belt for the film, but that's just my OCD.

ANH : Plain, undyed / scuffed upper and bottom edges

    ESB : Plain

    RotJ : Belt groove

This appears to be true on a general level. For me it's all about studying the costume and understanding it. In Executor and Imperator clearance I have been quite lenient, because I don't think my level of OCD is for everyone ;)

And as Mark says we have some excellent belts available here on the forum.

  3. For me I always try and replicate what you see on screen. Someone who isn't well versed with the costume may question your decision, but you will be able to show your reference. I believe the CRL would be confusing if it tried to go into too much depth. As BJ said it's a guideline for all occurrences of the costume. If many people wear that costume in the film, with different configurations it will become more generalised. This is why a number of items have been shown as being optional.

  4. For me I try to think of clearance submission pictures as the best possible pictures of your uniform you can get. For a WIP it's fine to be rough and ready, but your final submissions should be as if the Emperor himself was inspecting you ;)

Thanks for the positive response to my feedback, I'm pleased you've accepted it as constructive. Putting your uniform up for additional levels of clearance is an admirable thing, and daunting especially as your progress is visible to fellow 501st members.

  5. Cameron,

Thanks for your request. There are somethings you will need to address before I can grant you Imperator level. I'll break down the uniform by part, commenting on it accordingly.

    Cap

I'd like to congratulate you on your cap, it's got a nice shape to it, and fits you well.

Can you please provide me with a side picture of your code disk to confirm it has the necessary detailing to match the screen-used prop.

    Tunic

This could with a little pressing and pulling down to provide a crisper appearance.

The arms appear to be a little bunched up where you're wearing the gauntlets. Either they're not tucked in properly or they're a little long, it's hard to tell which.

    Rank bar

Can you please straighten this a little. Ideally the bottom of Praji's rank bar is in line with the top of the code cylinder pocket.

    Code cylinder

Can I please have a close up picture of the top of the code cylinder, I cannot see evidence of the blue tip. From what I can see you have a modified dosimeter, which should suffice. We have a supplier here on the IOC that produces excellent replicas which will pass Imperator level clearance.

    Belt

Can you please provide the following measurements:

    the height of the belt

    the dimensions of the buckle

the distance from the edge of the buckle to the snap on the belt

    Jodhpur trousers

Your trousers look a little baggy and rumpled. Hopefully this can be remedied by pressing them and adding elastic stirrups to the bottom and bracers to the top. The flares are especially rumpled as you can see in the picture below, they've actually folded back in on themselves.

    Officer boots

These look to be of a high standard.

    Belt boxes

These look to be of a high standard.

    Black gauntlet gloves

These look to be of a good standard, and include the correct back of hand detailing.

    Merr Sonn Power 5

Looks to be of a good standard, there are a couple of nicks and glue residue, but I'll put these down to battle damage. You have the appropriate greeblies and detailing, so I'm happy with your submission.

    Merr Sonn Power 5 holster

This looks to be of a high standard, I particularly like the colour.

    General appearance

This is awkward bit, whilst not mentioned in the CRL we also judge the appearance of the person. At Imperator level you and your uniform are meant to be as close a representation of an Imperial Officer as seen on screen as possible.

We are quite lenient, with the exception of certain face characters (e.g. Grand Moff Tarkin): we do not expect people to look like the actors on the film. We do however expect them to have an 'Imperial look'. Whilst bearded Imperial Officers do not appear in any of the films (it's fine if you want to do a rebel) we do allow beards at Imperator level if they are neatly trimmed.

    Overall

There a number of points which need to be addressed, whilst there are a few none of them appear to be insurmountable.

  6. Thanks Gary, your post made me chuckle. I was on my way back from parents and have only just started to catch up with the forum.

Push buttons have a cream coloured inner button which gives the button a little more depth. Looking at high resolution screen grabs we've concluded push buttons were used on the original rank bars in A New Hope, and The Empire Strikes Back and probably the Return of the Jedi. Return of the Jedi is a little unusual in the fact that all of the rank bars have 3 red buttons and 3 blue buttons, regardless of rank.

It is a personal choice, we have an excellent supplier of plexi glass rank bars here, who has served a large number of officers, and are perfectly suitable. Personally I prefer, and encourage people who are producing costumes to Executor and Imperator level of clearance to have a look and consider push buttons.

  7. From my perspective I'd say watch the films, and look at the modern day armed forces with regards to hair. In the films you never see an officer with a beard, a couple have neatly trimmed moustaches. In the armed forces you do see officers with neatly trimmed beards, so I'd go with that as a push. At the end of the day think about what you're trying to replicate / represent, and think about what your audience will be expecting. Imperial officers are meant to look maticulous and well kept.

I don't think a scruffy beard suits an Imperial Officer - a rebel - fine.

  8. I have a degree of underlap, you don't want it too short because it won't sit right.

I haven't found I need any velcro to hold my belt up, my belt is so tight it's not moving. For my staff officer it has to be tight enough to support the weight of my Merr Sonn Power 5 (based on a Denix Mauser - quite heavy).

  9. I've done a break down of the uniforms from ANH here:

    http://www.imperialofficer.com/forum/index.php?/topic/4698-officer-uniform-configuration/#entry53635

I've cleared to Imperator level with the Malcolm Weaver costume - unidentified gantry officer. There is some debate as to whether the officer had 2 or 3 buttons. Even on the bluray it's not clear. I cleared with 3 buttons, and the boss says 3 so we're going with 3.

  10. I've heard good things about Magnoli but I have no direct experience with them. Clothears does a very screen accurate ANH black officer uniform (451 version) from what I've heard and seen on some threads here. Also heard they have a considerable wait time though.

I'll vouch for Clothears. Based on research undertaken here I commissioned her to produce the Fahrenheit 451 style ANH screen accurate Staff Officer. I was very pleased with the result and a number other people have purchased it since. They do have a long wait time, but it does help you spread the payments. Also if there are any problems with the uniform they are quickly resolved.

  11. Amanda,

On the whole a great submission. I'd like to see a couple of alterations:

I'd like to see the belt moved down a little, I think it would look better if it sat over the center of the jump suit, covering the elasticated area.

I think your sleeves are a little long, on one of the pics I can't see your hand. If you can get those altered that would be a great improvement.

If you have a look at the example picture in the CRL you should be able to see what I mean.

    http://www.501st.com/databank/Costuming:IC_imperial_bridge_crew

Could I also have some additional pictures, the costume does not need to worn for these:

The cap from the front, so I can see the stitching on the peak is correct.

I can just make out your compad and tools pockets, can you just provide me with a clearer picture of them.

The cargo pocket on the right sleeve.

The pointed collar on the back of the neck.

As silly as it sounds when you submit your revised pics, I'd like to see your hair arranged little more of a military style - pulled back a little more. I understand Juno Eclipse is a little 'free and easy' but that is more due to the fact she's special operations. When she wore her standard officers uniform she's more military looking. I understand bridge crew aren't as formal as officers, but you have to imagine you are on Lord Vaders Star Destroyer - what would he think ;)

As I say nothing here is major by any stretch, on the whole your uniform fits you well. I particularly like your boots, it's getting harder to find boots which have that vintage look.

Good luck, I look forward to seeing the tweaks.

  12. lol, thank you so much. The officer rank bar is very interesting.

I assumed the rank bar was from a RotJ costume, so I was interested to see if it was plexi glass or push button. This is definitely push button, but we don't know if it's screen used. Personally I think it could be actual Star Wars props are less likely to be fake in this kind of exhibit. Yes they might dress the costume with the wrong belt (or holster) but the end of the day it still came from a costume, even if it wasn't the right one.

Myself and a fellow Officer from the UKG have been promoting the accuracy of push button rank bars for ANH officers, and those can be clearly seen. I'd like to think they used them also for ESB, as it was filmed in the same country. I'm not sure about RotJ as it was filmed primarily in the US. Sadly I can't get a clear enough picture of the rank bar in ESB and RotJ to prove what they used either way.

  13. This is a little odd, but no one would accuse me of being normal ;)

At the moment there is a Star Wars costume exhibition in Times Square.

    http://www.discoverytsx.com/star-wars-exhibition

Unfortunately, living in the UK, this is a little expensive for me to attend in person. Amongst the costumes on display there are two particular costumes I have a specific and personal interest in. I would like to ask if someone could take some high resolution photographs for me, not on a smart phone ... sorry.

The first, understandably, is the Imperial Officer Costume.

    22941837909_e89cbbed01_h.jpg

In addition to a nice head on picture of the whole costume, from the sole of the boot, to the top of the cap. I would like close up pictures of the following parts:

    the cap

the collar and rank bar in the same shot (so I can gauge the height of the collar based on the size of the rank bar)

    the belt buckle and fastener

    the belt boxes

    the flare on the jodhpurs

    The Xwing pilot

    23013949180_d3fd916f39_b.jpg

Again, firstly a nice head on picture of the whole costume, and close ups of the following parts:

the helmet, as much as humanly possible

the tools in the upper arm pocket

the belt buckle, and the surrounding webbing (to get an idea of the weave and width)

the flares on the side of the belt

the compad on the left forearm

the gloves, ideally to show the back of the hand

the leg flares on the left boot, trying to get the whole lot

the right boot, to show if there is a buckle like the Tie Pilot

I understand this is quite demanding. Since this has nothing to do with the 501st or the Imperial Officer Corps, and is a personal favour I will reimburse you, via paypal, the cost of the ticket, on receipt of the photos.

Thanks in advance, this would be a great favour to me.

  14. It's a shame, for where it does well - the piping on the upper peaks, it's a little let down in other places - the top stitching and detail on the peak. But for those troopers at non cannon events who like to wear berets with their trooper armour, or officer caps with the garrison shirts this is a nice alternative.

    Great find though.
