I haven't yet, I feel that'll probably end up making most of it myself (with help/reliance upon others for the leatherwork side.) The "Sniper Configuration: Cassian Costuming Group" on Facebook has a lot of references from RL members for it though, I'll try and keep you updated when I reach that stage

You should be set with the uniform and the hat.

The Cosplaysky Deluxe costume is the one you're looking for. The olive-green version, if it fits you nicely, should be approved to the highest level. So there shouldn't be a problem getting approved.

For the hat, get a yard. That should be enough. You can email Cosplaysky to ask them how to order the extra fabric

While wearing my bridge crew on a hospital visit last week, I split off from the rest of the group while they were getting changed to find a staff member. While I was in the elevator, a lady with a pram was watching me worried. She asked "Is that a costume?" and when I replied, she seemed very relieved and said "That's a relief, I thought you were from the bomb squad and there was a threat in the hospital or something" O_O

I got called Tarkin a bunch of times during a Christmas pageant also... do I look that old? Really!

Verfolger reacted to Fizilbert in Merr Sonn P5 conversion from Hasbro DL44
I started a topic before but I can't seem to find it.

I am currently using a Hasbro DL-44 as my trooping blaster.  Most people wont know the difference, but I always wanted to make one more accurate so I decided to convert an extra Hasbro blaster I have to resemble a Merr Sonn Power 5.

So this is the blaster as it looks out of the box.

My original intentions for this blaster was to just paint it black and give it to a friend to use as a trooping blaster.  That is why it has the black paint on it.  But plans changed.
I used a dremel to cut off the scope and then sand down some of the raised areas that were left.  This left a large hole on the top of the blaster where the scope was cut off.  I used some spare plastic I had sitting around to cover the hole on the top.  I also sanded off some of the writing on the side of the blaster.

So now I needed a scope.  I work in healthcare so I found a small blood vial that I thought would work well.  You can pretty much use anything you can find that is shaped like a tube and can fit on the blaster well.  A friend of mine also had some coiled wire left over from another build he was working on. This is rubber-coated, coiled wire as you would find from headphones or something similar.

I sanded the top of the blaster down some more and added another flat piece of plastic to put the "scope" on.  I also sanded a flat section onto the round vial so it would sit better on the blaster, and drilled a small hole onto the top of the blaster so we could put the wire down into it.

    Update
I got the hose adapters and cut it in half.  I glued halves together, end to end with some superglue.  I tried CA glue at first, but it didn't work, I guess the type of plasitc was not compatible.  After the superglue dried I put some E6000 on the inside seam for further reinforcement.  I then used the E6000 to glue the whole thing to the side of the blaster, as seen below.  I did not put one on the other side, this will allow it to be more easily holstered, since I have a left side holster, and will allow me to replace batteries as needed.

Thanks, I'll definitely have to keep that in mind!

I don't actually have an update on my build in this post, but I have been thinking though some things about the rest of the outfit and I wanted to see what the rest of you thought and what sort of precedents may come from the Clone Wars. Generally speaking, I'm wondering how much you stay true to the on screen look when creating an animated character's costume and how much (if any) adaptation or interpretation there is in that translation. I would assume that the goal is to stay as close to the animation as possible since it's about our only official source for his appearence. So with that in mind, I want to run down the list of things I've been considering.

There are certain things about Kallus' uniform that are clearly deliberate differences from film officers or even others in Rebels. For instance, his pants are clearly straight legged rather than the flared out riding trousers of your typical imperial officer.

I would assume we should also hold true to other design changes even if they just appear to be simplifications. e.g. The belt buckle. The disc in the middle is a much simpler design, almost looking like they just stuck a washer on a rectangular buckle blank.

There are a couple of design choices that seem less obvious to me however.

    1. The material. The character model has a very mottled looking color to his uniform. Should this be a similar grey suiting to the film officers, or should we go so far as to use a fabric with a similarly spotty, textured look?

    2. The rank bars. IN the show model, they look very much opaque. Should this be reflected in the costume to follow the official source for the character design as literally as possible, or should they be translucent like the film bars?

    3. The center flap. The lighter grey piece in the middle of his tunic. Should it be treated like a movie tunic just with the middle section narrower and a lighter color, or should it be a fully detachable piece that can snap onto both sides over the top of the closed tunic.

    4. The little details. There are some things in this outfit that look very plainly painted onto the surface of the character model, such as the arrow on the collar. Can these be represented somewhat differently as long as they convey the correct appearance, or should I break out the fabric paint? Same goes for some pieces of the earcaps on the helmet. A lot of the details on them in the show seem to be painted onto the surface, but they also seem to represent indented holes, which is how they show up on the action figures.

That's what I've got on my mind for now. I'd love to hear what you all have to say on the matter, especially anyone who is a part of the approval process for a new character like this.

I'm still not totally sure where I'll end up going with the helmet, but I did spend some time this evening mocking up the chest armor in a decidedly more old school fashion, with cardstock and lots of masking tape. I think I need to make some tweaks, possibly letting raised pieces come just a bit farther down the chest, but I'm happy with the general shape. As cropped awkward mirror selfies (sorry about the quality by the way) , these probably aren't the most accurate picture of what it looks like in real life, but they're all I have for now. I'm thinking I'll make the real thing out of lightweight cardboard which I'll fiberglass and bondo.

I think it looks much better when not poorly taped onto my shirt as well.

Well, I've started making a model of his helmet. I'm not sure yet if I'll try to get it printed or just use it as the basis for a scratchbuild. I'm pretty happy with it so far though. I think I need to tweak the faceplate and I'm having some trouble getting the holes in the raised dome sections to work the way I want, but overall I think it's headed in the right direction.

He looks awesome, but he also looks like he's going to be a pain in the @$$ to build, mainly because of the boots, you'd almost have to Frankenstein some together.

Well, without fully knowing who this guy is, or where exactly he fits in the empire, we can all agree that he is a cool-looking imperial officer & I'm sure we'll be costuming as this guy before too long. So, having said that, here are all the pics I can find of him for reference. I'm sure there will be more very soon.

I'm a little late to the discussion, but I thought I'd put in my 2 cents worth.

I am not (yet) a member of the 501st, but to me the 501st are costumers, and cosplayers. However, at the same time, the 501st is something else entirely. The 501st, is the 501st. Sure, as costumers, you make and design costumes to wear, and try to make them accurate to their source. As cosplayers, you wear the costumes, and let yourself become the character.

But, with the 501st there is a difference, just as with other similar groups. The 501st has a goal, and a purpose. We are dedicated to not just make a good costume, but to be part of something bigger. To create a costume, to wear it, and know that you have put in the effort, to not just make, assemble, or organise it, but to be part of a group. And as a group, the 501st, is not just about having an awesome outfit that you can wear to conventions, but it is also about helping people, and making people happy. Raising money for people, and doing what they can.

There is a distinction between a police officer, and people who try and stop crime. A police officer IS a person who tries to stop crime, but a person who tries to stop crime, isn't necessarily a police officer. Police officers have standards and authority. Rules, and a distinct purpose.

The 501st, are cosplayers, and costumers, but the 501st is also something in itself. Not just pieces of clothing, a uniform or armour, but a whole community that we are part of, with a goal, and a purpose.

If you don't like the phrase "cosplayer", that is up to you. Just as some police mightn't like slang phrases like "cops". But at the same time that you don't like it, it IS a term that defines what you are doing. You're part of the 501st. You do costuming as you put together your outfit to fit standards, yet you are also cosplayers as you wear the outfit to pretend to be a character in a costume. You are part of the 501st, as you do that as part of a larger community, for a purpose.

As someone who has been exposed to the costuming and cosplay forum (I was a costume design major) for quite a long time, I would like to describe how many of the serious costumers/cosplayers (and the professionals) see it:

Costuming is the art and act of creating a costume, usually from scratch, but in some cases by putting together modern clothes to create a 'costume'. Costume designers for stage and theater do not always have to create extravagant costumes. Sometimes a costume is just a pair of jeans, a nice shirt, and the accessories. Every movie, every stage production, broadway play, and even circus act has a costume designer.

Cosplay is a bit more specific. It is a mish-mash of the words "costume" and "play". That does not mean that cosplayers don't take it seriously. There are several professional cosplayers out there (Cupcake Cosplay, Yaya Han, etc) who make very high quality, top of the line costume builds. The clothing itself is costume. The act of dressing up and acting as the character you are dressing as is cosplay.

The way I see it, the act of making our uniforms, armor, et cetera for the 501st is costuming.

However, once we get into character (especially those who are playing specific characters, like Asajj Ventress, or Mara Jade, or Darth Vader) are cosplaying the character.

The words are not interchangeable, but are, in fact, quite symbiotic. I am a costumer, because I design and create costumes; in other words, a costume designer. However, I am also a cosplayer, because when I dress in those costumes, I am taking on the persona of the character I am dressed as.

Got a new one last night...
I'm wearing my new TX armor chest for my Gunner and a mom pointing at me keeps saying She this and she that.
I shake my head "No" at whatever she was saying and she was confused asking, "Oh, you're not from Star Wars?"
My reply was, "Yes I am from Star Wars but I'm not a woman."
She was shocked and tried to defend herself thinking the chest armor was there to protect my boobs...

The statue game can be good and bad. At a recent troop, I was standing very still in my Royal Guard, when a policeman smacked the side of my helmet very hard, saying "this one almost looks real". My reflex reaction was to smack the crap out of him across the chest with my force pike. It didn't hurt him because it's just hollow plastic, but it scared him enough to hopefully not go around smacking expensive props (alive or not) like a moron.

But not long after that I played the statue game (stood really still and waited for some people to try and poke me to see if I was real... I love having a bucket!)

As a stormtrooper officer I was reffered as "Police Officer" from a japanese tourist, who asked the way.
Once we were hired in a shopping mall, we entered the mall to the backdoors because it should be a surprise for the customers. Very conspirative action! After we leaved the changing room in costumes, one of the employees behind the scene, who also was not informed about our mission, looked surprised and ask me (whispering) if we are special agents from the german customs and looking for illegal workers. For kicks I said "Yes, of course, we are VERY special agents, but it´s top secret!" I asked her in which shop she´s working. She answered "housewares". I said "Oh good, first we start our investigation in the toy store, but later we also come to your shop too." She nodded her head, said "thank you" and disappeared. The whole day I never saw her again!
And a 501st-comrade of mine, also in black uniform, was called "russian submarine crew member" from an older woman. Further she told him her sympathy because of the Kursk-Disaster, because he lost so many comrades. Very weird situation.
