  1. More posting from me.

I just had a major breakthrough moment.

According to IB's measurement .jpg, 14.5" is my shaft height for Jack boots.

And according to a (german language) product catalogue .PDF I downloaded from Trabert, the Becherling's have a "schafthöhe" of 36cm... 14.17"

An entire 1/3 of an inch too short. :):D:)

Still haven't heard back from Trabert themselves yet. Fingers crossed!

  2. The price got better

I created a guest account to check shipping costs, and once the site knew I was in Australia, it took the german VAT off, which is 19%! - not sure if they have international shipping.

Way better than the equivalent custom wesco boots (about 2/3 the price)

Don't get me wrong, over 500 AUD is expensive, but its the cheapest L3 Boot I've found to date (in a 15). I'm going to keep looking - but this is now the backup plan.

I realise I'm continuing my habit of talking to myself in my threads, but if I can help someone with feet as big as mine skip even half of the searching and frustration I've had to go through to get this far - that's another win for me!

  3. Oops! :)

European size 50 (Große 50 in German)

Roughly equates to a size 15.5 US shoe size

    I am 6'8" - observe:

Sorry for the confusion (they're more likely to be in the hundreds of €)

Not the right size, but I'm getting close, and they cost about what I thought they would (warning - in German)

(Link to German retail site deleted because they didn't carry anything above a 12)

  4. So, I tried something new in my nightly phone searches for enormous yet proper Knobelbecher boots tonight - I switched from Google to Bing... o_O ... And believe it or not, it think it might have paid off!

    Heavy emphasis on the "might"!!!

(Link deleted because their customer service Dept are a family-sized bag of D... Richards)

They just barely hit the magic number of 50 Euro (my exact size). Now, I haven't heard back from this Stockheim based shoemaker, and after my unsuccessful attempts to contact a Munich based shoemaker, I'm not getting my hopes up just yet!

If this pans out, I can't rule out sightings of a grown man doing the happy dance while making noises that sound suspiciously like the Swedish chef from the muppets!

If my bubble needs bursting, don't hesitate, do it!

(but please be gentle, I think this is as close as I've ever gotten to the boots of my dreams!)

(Also, at this point I have no idea what they cost, always fun! (they're probably going for the whole "if you have to ask" mystique).

  5. If neccessary, you can machine wash the trousers here and there, but you wouldn't want to do it more than a few times in the costumes lifetime - the colour difference between jacket and pants will start to show after repeated washings.

I also hang my jacket up inside out after trooping, to dry for a while, before packing it away in my suit carrier.

  6. Depends, if your talking about a Staff/Warrant or line Officer suit, then its strictly dry clean only.

If its the bridge crew or scanning crew flightsuit then you can wash it on a cold cycle turned inside out with the spin cycle either at minimum speed or not on at all, and then air dry it as far from direct sunlight as possible. You could get away with a warm tumble dry (never hot) occasionally (emergencies) if you still have the embroidered cogs on - vinyl cogs, never tumble dry!

Also, remember to check the pockets, I washed mine Friday night with a trading card in the chest pocket, and the resulting 2 x 1 foot squared technicolor patches front and back almost gave me a heart attack when I turned it right side out AT THE CON!... thankfully a lint brush took care of it (get a lint brush).

Bridge crew must be washed in some kind of black clothing specific detergent (I use "Radiant black wash" down here in Australia), I'm not sure what you'd wash the scanning crew in to protect the colour.

Don't wash a hat in the machine, you'll likely destroy its shape - spot clean where neccessary and use something like febreeze on the inside occasionally.

    Hope that helps!

  7. I had my suit modified slightly

Apart from adding elastic stirrups to the pants (which is incredibly efficient for keeping your pants from blousing). MammaSith pulled the collar in a little, put a bigger modesty panel with Velcro and replaced and reversed the hooks (waaaay easier to do up in mirror now), and replaced the dinky metal tooth inner zip with a heavier plastic toothed zip, (hopefully this one won't throw a tooth and pop open under the slider).

But those little plastic snaps still work their way loose eventually.

Mine gets its fully approved debut next Saturday at Supanova.

  8. Hello

Having large feet, my quest for a knobelbecher Boot in gr. 50 has lead me to many a dead end.

Someone on JRS suggested contacting a Munich based custom shoemaker named Bertl, because he made some excellent engineers boots recently.

I've tried to contact schuh-bertl.de through the contact part of his website (English version) in both English, and in my half remembered high school German/Google translate. I've never received even a 'no, go away!'.

If anyone has an opinion on his work, or could help me get in contact so I can at least cross him off the list, I would be grateful.

The next step might be to go old school and send him a fax? Because calling the front desk from Australia is a little extreme.

  9. I've only worn my Warrant Officer once, but while wrangling at a troop I got asked a couple of times which TFA character I was...

I was in jeans, Chuck Taylor's and a STAR WARS TSHIRT!!!

One kid asked which guy are you, my answer: I'm the guy who looks after that guy (points at TK), kid: ...boriiiing! (Muffled laughter from TK)

on my trial run at Oz Comic-Con I scared so many people (so I'm 2m tall! what's scary about that?), and one guy told me he loves me, I told him I love me too!

  10. Hoaaaaaaaaah, my feet feel positively dainty.

My kirzas have been in the Kiev international mail exchange since the 9th (according to ukrposhta anyway)

Eventually I'll have to go for custom-made.

There's a guy in Munich named Bertl that has made custom engineers boots, I haven't heard back about replica Knobelbechers (English email, or Google translate German email! - my half remembered high school German wasn't up to the task).

Sovietboots also has "juft" boots in my size, what's the verdict on those? The top looks a little too contoured (is that a word?)
