Dimentex reacted to Centauri in Director Krennic CRL Discussion
Those are quite fine gloves !
They're not entirely accurate but close enough .
I really do have the feeling that those gloves are going to be suckers to find .
Like some stated before , they were most likely made for the movie , so there's little chance we find identical gloves in stores or online , the position of the snap on the glove is unusually high .
Maybe , just maybe Imperial Boots might release a new pair of gloves ... If the movie proves that all Officers wear the same gloves as Krennic , then they may consider making them if enough people show interest .

IPB would be perfect to make good ones. They did the same with TFA TK gloves and pretty quickly the original ones sent out with ANOVOS were replaced. For sure if they are more than just Krennic they will produce them. Good point! I'll ping IPB today..

Not yet. We thought they were just standard black leather gloves like... ANH I believe - forgetting which one had unmarked backs, ANH or ROTJ - but then the Japanese poster came out (few pages back if you want to look) and we saw the snap. I don't believe we will see them close enough until at least the VD, and maybe not until the Blu Ray comes out. Someone up earlier thought they could identify them as a german officer glove (which would fit, half of his costume is german officer parts), but then the issue is finding them in proper condition - and that may be where we work with Imperial Boots or Wampa Wear (or both, whatever) to make them. I'd say screen accurate gloves probably would be L2/L3, at least for a while until we can get makers making correct gloves.

Daetrin - Many thanks for clarifying and for sharing some of the inner workings of the IOC and 501st, now all makes perfect sense.
Hopefully this crl discussion thread just further confirms to all how passionate we are about what we do and the costumes we build

Dimentex reacted to Daetrin in Director Krennic CRL Discussion
Hey everyone – I think it’s time to step back and clarify a few things. I don’t see this as a debate, just a discussion, as we are all on the same side. If it’s not clear, I’m actually pro-accuracy and I think my track record working with CRLs in this detachment stands on its own. Anyone who remembers how the CRLs looked before BJ & I re-wrote them wholesale knows what I mean.
However what I do want to ensure is that there is a logical process applied. It’s highly inefficient to not have standard language and components on CRLs, as everyone has ideas but putting the time in to keep them all consistent is not practical. Secondly, the vision from BJ who has been the DL for many a year since these were last rewritten was to ensure that common items like boots, rank bars, etc. are consistent in accuracy levels across all IOC costumes.
A case in point is code cylinders/dosimeters. There is a staff discussion to no longer allow chalk holders for them. At the time the CRLs were last written getting accurate code cylinders was hard or expensive or both. Allowing modified chalk holders was a good solution until better items became more widely available. Now is the time to make that move, but we need to ensure we are able to communicate this out effectively. One needs a plan such as:
Write up what the new standard is.
Show a comparison between the old and new, and where the old is deficient.
Get the proposal passed by DL/LMO
Publish out to the GMLs in the Legion what the change is
It’s not effective change management to simply declare a change and fumble through the rollout. When we made the change to have only accurate x-wing tools for crewman costumes, there was a lot of work behind the scenes to map this all out, and then we – that is me – had to run through every CRL to clean things up.
So with rank bars, the logic makes sense to up the accuracy at this point in time based on what I’m reading, but what is missing is a clear summary of 1) what the problem is with the current standard 2) what the solution is 3) impact on current/future members and 4) clear language that will accompany the CRLs.
A picture is worth 1000 words and having side by side pictures with notes can remove much of the confusion and uncertainty of what people describe, as it’s not practical to assume that every GML who will read the change understands the terms, vendors, etc. Or even rank and file 501st members.
Krennic for sure is a “face” character just like Tarkin is, so you are right in that regard. However the standards for Krennic should be in line for what we use with Tarkin, Daala, and other face characters in the detachment is all.
If I seem to harp on these points, it’s because I’m looking at it from the point of view of a GML who may not visit the detachment often. Also, I’d like to ask no private PM’s. IF there is a good visual showing the difference between the current low standard rank bars and the correct ones, just post it for all to see, as well at least one or two easy to access vendors. If it looks good, we can make this change across *all* IOC CRLs, which is a better way to go about it.

You might find a lot more help from the Armored Cavalry Detachment. They're the official wardens of the General Veers outfit armor -- http://forum.armoredcavalry.net/
As for the rank, you'd just have to see if the people making the chestplate are capable of changing the rank for you. I'm not sure if the rank tiles on the chestplate are part of the chestplate or an addition over the top of it-- I'd hope it's the latter.

Dimentex got a reaction from skelitor120 in Are these gloves good?
Here ya go:
http://www.toughgloves.com/fit.html
So I bought 3 different pairs for Krennic (don't ask, I returned 2), and what I found was while I measured at a 9-10, the 10 fit in the Patrol gloves, but anything with a wrist required an 11 (and the Marksman actually needed a 12 for me).
My best suggestion is follow that guide, then size up if you're at or near the top number - and order from somewhere like Amazon first. Try them on, if they fit, awesome, if not, follow the return policy, and order a size or two higher depending on how they fit. Just don't try to force your hand if it doesn't want to go - they are leather, but you still can rip leather.

I think I mentioned somewhere that I wasn't planning on buying from that seller specifically, but rather just that brand of gloves. They seem to be from 60-100$ no matter where I look, so that's why I wanted to check before shelling out that much!

Ok we have given our opinions and rightly so as this is a discussion but lets not let it get anything more than that Im still however on slippers for Tarkin

Actually that's not quite right. The Legion has ever been about as accurate as we can get, spare no expense. AP suits were available back in 2005 when I started, but it took years and years for the Legion to get to where the FX helmet was not allowable, and the FX suit was not allowable unless modifications were made.
We have known for a very long time that Tupperware back packs were not accurate either, but it was only until more accurate parts became easily obtainable that the CRL standards were updated to reflect them for the sandtrooper.
As someone who has written and re-written dozens of CRL entries over 10 years across 3 different detachments, I realize that we can't please everyone with the process. I also realize that some garrisons really want to push the accuracy bar, and others resist every step of the way, but the reality is that we are a worldwide group and some things just take time to achieve.
You may think we don't go far enough, others think we push it too far. We have to find a common ground that works for everyone, whether they are the super trooper who does dozens of troops a year and will spend top dollar on their kit, and also the person who just wants a good-enough backup costume.
Lastly, prop replication != screen accuracy. Especially in the OT. Else we'd have to support all manner of costume flubs, which I don't think anyone wants to do (unless they are on RPF ).
In the end, detachments simply make recommendations. The final call will be at the DL/LMO level.

Dimentex reacted to Daetrin in Director Krennic CRL Discussion
You are missing the point Kris. This is not unique costume like a Vader, Boba Fett, etc. where your logic may make sense. No one is saying it "should be cheap", but having standards for these types of characters that are unusually expensive isn't what the 501st is about either.
Else we wouldn't have L1/L2/L3 standards, and every Legion TK would have to meet Centurion.

Dimentex reacted to Daetrin in Director Krennic CRL Discussion
Guys - just remember that L1 is basic acceptance and isn't meant to be perfect screen accuracy or prop replication. Also, when BJ & I did the IOC CRLs, we were very careful to do a lot of standardization on common parts like rank bars, boots, etc. for numerous reasons. So, let's focus on the main parts for now. L1 should not be perfection - it should be a pretty good representation of the character at a reasonable cost/level of effort that is consistent with other L1 costumes in IOC.

Well, and now Rogue One has grooved belts - so apparently they all went to wardrobe after the plans were transmitted to Tantive IV

Dimentex got a reaction from bdh1138 in Director Krennic CRL Discussion
You misunderstand me. There is no one on IOC or Legion boards that makes a completed rank bar with push buttons - at least not that I have seen. And having priced them out, even if say I or you or Kris were to start making them, they wouldn't compare in price to the plexiglass.
For comparison - are we going to require screen accurate boots for level 1, given there is exactly ONE maker found ad they're $450 a pop? That would immediately exclude probably 90% of the people working on this costume from submitting for quite some time.
I don't see it as a margin of inaccuracy - I see it as looking like the character to the average joe's eyes, and L2/L3 is looking like you walked off the screen to OUR eyes. We already have fairly detailed requirements anyway - demanding absolute screen accuracy for even admission on this character, simply because... what? We want the elitist label back?
I respect your opinions, and trust me, I'm working to get accurate rank bars - but I currently have neither the tools nor the talent to make them. I'm a computer tech, not a costume designer. And I don't feel that Tigg's bars are that far off - not one single person looked at my costume this weekend and said "those rank bars are wrong."
Do I know they can be improved? Hell yes. Same with the boots. But again, if you're going to demand 100% screen accuracy on this ONE part, why not on all parts? Why even have levels? You have to have 100% accurate stitching, you have to have the belt with the notches and the right code disk, you have to have the gun and holster (sorry to anyone who lives in a country that doesn't allow it), you have to have the right boots, and so on.
I feel like we're being a little ridiculous here.

Dimentex got a reaction from DAK72 in first Troop - Children's Healthcare of Atlanta Christmas Parade 2016
Cool Admin around here decided to make a larger heading, "Star Wars Galactic Alliance" - the parade on Thanksgiving down south in Houston used that title - they mentioned all the clubs, but that was the banner on the screen (we were carrying one of each club, the vertical types). There was just a little bit of, shall we say, "butthurt" over everything being labeled 501st, so we try to make sure everyone is recognized to keep the natives from rioting.
We're pretty close knit here too - MOST people have costumes in multiple clubs, though not all (I'm one of the outliers, seeing how I just dumped a crapload of money into Krennic, but I promised my wife we would get Jedis next year, so... eh. )

Honestly, I wouldn't be surprised if we didn't see more First Order materials until after the 2nd or 3rd movie in the trilogy. As it is, we only have solid footage of Finn (as a Trooper) and Hux (as an Officer), everything else is, for the most part, background stuff.

Laughed at your last line. "Replicate THIS, suckers!"

Its not unusual for the costume designers to do that, the costumer designer on Dredd for example deliberately did certain things because he wanted costumers to work for it

Dimentex reacted to bjsavage7 in Need help with boot question
Sorry I'm just now seeing this. Just thought I'd give my thoughts on this.
I've never seen a stretch panel in that particular spot, so this is new to me. I'll have to start checking for those.
Stretch panels are specifically mentioned in the CRL because all the ones I've ever seen were on the back, side, or somewhere very obvious, making the boots look inaccurate. As mentioned, zippers on the inner shaft are allowed because they are basically out of plain sight. I think this detail might also fall into that out of sight category & we need to take a look at that. The thought behind it's placement is seemingly the same as having a zipper there, in my opinion. I would say those are fine for basic approval at least. If you can find better ones, or have this detail modified by a cobbler, that's great, but please feel free to quote me in saying I think these are ok for basic.

Dimentex reacted to DAK72 in first Troop - Children's Healthcare of Atlanta Christmas Parade 2016
We are a pretty tight knit group here in Georgia. Lots of crossover between the groups. So many people have kits in two or all three clubs and swap out wearing different kits depending on their mood. Everything always seems to focus on the 501st, but we always have RL and MM on hand at each troop.

So, there's one SS of him somewhere with the Director Rank and the hat, again in the rain - could be flash back, could be something else, hard to say. But every shot of him with the hat has also had the poncho - so I don't know if we want to have 2 CRL's, "regular" Krennic and "rain" Krennic, but I think the rain parts need to wait at least till the 16th for the movie and VD.
Cape - I went back and forth on this. In my (albeit perfectionist opinion when it comes to this costume), I wanted L1 to require the cape to have all the details. Like, ALL the details. But I took a step back and realized that requiring the specific stitch patterns was probably something that was a higher level - we allow pleather boots at Level 1, so why would we require ABSOLUTE screen accuracy on something like a cloak?
That being said, I haven't reworded for the panels of the cloak, but yes, having had mine made (and gone though the process with my tailor, who I'm surprised didn't stab me with scissors numerous times when I wanted to change something), requiring the 6 panels and the yoke is not out of bounds IMHO. It makes the cloak sit correctly and look correct.
