    That's really too bad, man.

Ultimately, what you do is up to you. Its your build. Id say if you were confident that you could make a tunic yourself or if its something that you've really wanted to learn and attempt yourself (i.e. if its been a goal of yours to become a better tailor), then take a shot. If its really not something you want to tackle yourself or if you think you're not up to the task, roll the dice again with CS. This time you know what to check for and you know that if there is anything wrong, contact CS asap. That's my way of thinking at least...

Very fair point. It’s pretty funny - everything I could have done wrong with this build I have done wrong. Boots, not noticing the tunic length in time... just have to laugh it off and keep going; I’m going to get this done.

Next step - pattern searching to see what I can find before making a decision.

  2. Finally heard back from Cosplaysky, and it was a no-go; just outside the window of them being able to do anything. So, the next question - do I bite the bullet and spin the wheel with them again, knowing that I run the same risk of getting short shirted (pun DEFINITELY intended) or do I try and make my own? I've looked into places like Magnoli and Clothears, and I just cannot afford them, so if I buy - it has to be CS. On the other hand, I am a novice tailor at best, so making would be a... process.

  3. Unfortunately, this is their custom size - I went back and checked, and they botched the length. I've been sitting on this costume for a while and while I've contacted them, I'm not sure that they'll care to do anything. I am hesitant to order another tunic from them, and may just go local if I need to replace. But, it won't hurt so we'll see what happens!

  4. I'm actually in the home stretch for my Staff Officer build!

I have a pair of boots being altered at the cobbler now, and I was planning on taking my CosplaySky uniform in for some minor alterations (sleeves, tighten the calves on the pants... you know, the usual), but now I'm second guessing the length on my tunic. The rest of the fit is great (surprisingly so, with the exception of the sleeves).

    My waist is here:

But the seam that runs all the way around the tunic is here:

    XvMcGii.jpg?1

It sits right below my ribcage. So, is the tunic too short? If I were to lengthen the skirt, it would make the tunic longer, but the seam would still be high, and not covered by my belt. Or do I just leave everything alone, wear the belt at my waist, call it good and not worry about it? Or am I just another CosplaySky story, and need to get a new tunic made? :)

Any help would be dearly appreciated. I'm bringing this project to completion to hell or high water (and learning LOTS of life lessons along the way) - and this board has always been invaluable in planning.

  5. I've a quick question about boot height - I bought a pair of Hispar Decent Dressage about a year ago, and they were rejected by my local GML (understandably so) because of the panel on the inside of the calf. I've been putting off my build due to real life and such, but now want to get this done - and the boots are really just my last block.

If I were to take the boots to a cobbler and have them cut down beneath the panel (which would also get rid of the Spanish flare top) the boots would sit about 2 inches below my knee joint pretty much at the top of my calf. Is that tall enough or do the boots need to go right up to the top, so to speak?

Sorry I'm just now seeing this. Just thought I'd give my thoughts on this.

I've never seen a stretch panel in that particular spot, so this is new to me. I'll have to start checking for those.

Stretch panels are specifically mentioned in the CRL because all the ones I've ever seen were on the back, side, or somewhere very obvious, making the boots look inaccurate. As mentioned, zippers on the inner shaft are allowed because they are basically out of plain sight. I think this detail might also fall into that out of sight category & we need to take a look at that. The thought behind it's placement is seemingly the same as having a zipper there, in my opinion. I would say those are fine for basic approval at least. If you can find better ones, or have this detail modified by a cobbler, that's great, but please feel free to quote me in saying I think these are ok for basic.

This is actually good to know, and maybe can help clarify the CRL down the line - these boots are actually really good quality and are incredibly useful for those of us with larger calfs (calves?).

I'm stuck with the boots no matter what - RidersMall said that there was nothing they could do. So, I think my plan is to modify them by having a cobbler cut them down to flat top/English style and use the now separate Spanish flare to patch the hole where the stretch panel will be removed by said cobbler. I would much rather play by the letter of the (current) law, and not become "that guy" who bugs the GML; plus, if I go back now with what BJ said, it'll look like I tattled. And I REALLY don't want that. :)

That being said - thanks for all the advice and discussion. It really helped immensely.

I hear ya. But it just burns my bottom because I've seen guys cleared with them, even though yes, letter of the law says no.

It's not like a jacket with top stitching all over, or Bic pens for code cylinders... Boots are the one part that we absolutely can not make ourselves.

The stretch panel mention in the CRL should be amended to say they work if they are on the inside, same as zippers.

    Okay, rant over.

I had a local cobbler cut the tops off straight starting at the very bottom of the stretch panel because the boots were just too tall. I don't  know if that's an option for you, but it worked for me.

    Best of luck!

If nothing else, I deeply appreciate the commiseration. :)

I'm going to take them to a cobbler - but if I go to the bottom of the stretch panel, then they may be too low; they are maybe a quarter to an eighth inch too high, and I was going to just get a good thick insert. I guess it'll come back to the CRL, which says "knee high"...

    ...crap, I'm doomed, aren't I? :)

How can it be a no? Folks with big calves have no choice but to have stretch panels.

I have those exact boots by the way, although I had to have a cobbler cut them down because they were too tall. Subsequently,  the stretch panel isn't there anymore.

But still, I've seen people hit level 2 if not 3 with them.

I can't fault them - the letter of the law (CRL) says no stretch panels; I was just hoping that the leather covering over then panel would have been enough to allow it, as it seems to in the past. The GMLs for this Garrison are pretty swamped, so I imagine it was quick decision - and I'm not going to be the jerk that argues with them.

I'm trying to see if it would be acceptable to cut the tops (essentially making them English style instead of Spanish) and use the extra leather to plug the hole where the panel is. It's not a great answer, but hopefully it's something.

I would be lying if I didn't admit this was a little disheartening. It seems that with the 501st, the mantra is that researching/assembling/making that first costume is the rite of passage that is admission to the group. Did that, and still got bit with this. Nothing to do with the CRLs or GMLs or anything specific - and I guess that's still on me.

  9. Hi all,

Just picked up a pair of the Hispar Decent Men's Riding Boots without zipper from Riders Mall; they arrived and there's a feature that wasn't in the pics that suddenly have me nervous.

    caHtXPC.jpgqcHHwnE.jpg

It's on the inside of the calf, and I'm desperately hoping it's still approvable. It appears that it's some sort of expansion panel. When I wear the boots, it doesn't really do anything, but I also haven't tried them with jodhpurs or such.

Also - just more to confirm; the CRL says Spanish Style is approvable. This is still the case, yes?

    Thoughts?

  10. I (like most others putting together an ID uniform, I would assume) am most worried about boots; specifically finding something that won't make my foot fall off. I've searched the forums up and down and investigated all the links in the resource guide, but I can't find anything that addresses my problem:

    I have super flat feet.

    I mean, like zero arch.

As a consequence, I wear a EEE width shoe - and even then I can't wear certain brands.

I'm not worried about calf circumference or height, since I fit in the charts for those - but nothing I can see talks about width; in fact, some talk about how they run on the narrow side.

Anyone have a suggestion for a starting place that doesn't involve a $500+ custom boot? Any brands to stay away from? I'd rather get good boots at the outset so that I'm not buying more later as I try and progress up the "ladder", but don't want to delay too long or have it hold up any potential approval timelines.

Thanks in advance for any insights! I just feel a little lost...
