  1. I managed to find some boots on Etsy that worked for me, but they're always so tight that I'm looking to get new ones soon. I was debating between Crow Props and Hessan (though if Hessan is hit or miss for custom that's concerning!)

I was wondering if there could be consideration to Crow Prop's hidden zipper being acceptable for L3. He has the zipper completely hidden under a panel in the back. Does anybody know if that would meet the intent of the CRL?

One correction: There is no need to retire your original costume, unless you alter it somehow to the point it can no longer be configured.  Which shouldn't be necessary... the differences are mostly just accessories.  The soft parts aren't different, other than maybe the hat pin, which is simple to swap back and forth.

When you submit a Bridge Crew with a flightsuit, and use that same flightsuit with other accessories to apply for Reserve Pilot, you don't have to retire your bridge crew.  It's still a viable costume.

Awesome, thanks! Seems like a good option... Even more motivation to fit back into the costume :D

I will also go back through your earlier submission photos on this thread (tomorrow though) and get you a line by line list of what you would need to change to bring your costume more in line with the requirements in the non-saga CRL.  That way, if you have to get your costume reapproved by your GML it should go quickly, and then your subsequent L2 resubmission should go quickly as well.

Finally, as the owner of a staff officer costume with a red lining myself, allow me to compliment you on your excellent choice there. :D:D:D

Thanks! I will appreciate knowing for sure what the deltas are. Even if I am grandfathered in to go to L2, I really see myself wanting to update to the new standard. If I'm going to make the effort to have all the details right I'd rather do it with the more accurate/updated standard.  (Unless you tell me something that results in starting the tunic over, then I'll happily be grandfathered :))

And thanks, I felt like the red looks so sharp with the black I couldn't resist!

  4. Thank you! I really appreciate you reaching out. Sadly, I got suited up for pictures and realized my quarantine weight was impacting my uniform fit :( I have been putting off updating pictures until I get back down to the size I made the uniform for. I am probably a couple of months away at this point. If it is easiest for me to withdraw and try again later I can do that.

I did have questions though about updated standards. I was approved with the old Staff Officer standard, and I know these are being updated to more accurately reflect the costumes. What would I need to update if I'm going for L2 in a couple of months? I was thinking disc on hat, belt with ridges, Rogue One style rank bar.... Is that correct?

Thats great to hear that you've made some really good progress on the hat during this time.

Could I request that you take front, back, and side pics of you wearing the hat (not with the code disk on or anything) just so I can see how the shape of the hat looks. I just want to make sure that the hat is conical. I suspect it is, but want to make sure. If it looks good on, then you should be good to go with finishing it.

    Cheers,

Appreciate interim feedback! Here are some pics... Please note I do intend to nicely press it all and tack down the middles of the flaps as I finish it out.

  6. Ok, this upgrade as been a quarantine adventure!

    - Out of sheer luck, a friend who I split a bolt of gabardine with years ago decided to make a different costume, and in the interim years moved a block away from me, so she dropped a couple of yards on my porch! (She is IOC bridge crew now).

    - I used up all of my black thread (foolishly) on face masks. All future masks will have yellow or pink thread, I swear! Same friend gave me her last spool of black in a socially distanced sidewalk exchange.

    - another 501st friend from across town shipped me some 3D printed bias tape makers in exchange for masks. This was totally necessary, because I did at least have the sense to look at my black bias tape before using it for masks... no match. Really needs to be the same fabric, the off the shelf tape didn’t look good.

    - In a stroke of genius, awhile back I bought some extra discs just in case.

I would greatly appreciate feedback on this before I take the effort to E6000 the disc to the front and hand stitch in the lining. If the bias tape (and hat as a whole) look good I will finish it out. Thanks in advance!

  8. Wanted to share some pics of the ladies of the Star Garrison and Kessel Base from Comicpalooza last weekend :)

    ladies group photo

Someone had an idea to do a group photo of "pinup style" costumes- started out as officers but as you can see also included some Imperial and Rebel variations, and even got Younglings involved.

    Jedi, pinup officer

Me with my rebel scum husband (NOT Rebel Legion approved- work in progress!)

With a couple of good friends who have actual officer costumes in work, so getting some use out of their accessories in the interim :)

Hey Sherry, it's me, Eric!   We met at Lucy's Christmas party (over Cards Against Humanity)!

I'll be at ComicPalooza, and in unform, pending my CosplaySky order arrives in time for me to get it altered/pressed.  That's all I'm waiting on.

Tanya got me a nice sewing machine for Christmas, replacing my dying one.  Hoping to tackle sewing my own uniform at the end of the summer.

Oh hi :) Cool, I'm sure I'll see you there!

  10. I'm not sure about the screen accuracy, but I used this black gabardine from Fashion Fabrics:

    https://www.fashionfabricsclub.com/p73418_wg0009c1blackgabardinebolt

I see that you're not far from me! Are you going to Comicpalooza? If so you can see what the fabric's like in person.

I drafted my own pattern so that I could have a nice tailored female uniform, but I've heard that people have good luck with off-the-shelf patterns for men. I think maybe this one?

    https://www.amazon.com/McCalls-Patterns-M4745-Costumes-SML-MED-LRG/dp/B000L5R4QM

You'd need to double seam placements (princess seams, arm seams, etc). and add code cylinder pockets, but that's not difficult once you have your base pattern.

    Hello Sherry,

I have now reviewed your request for an Executor promotion for your Staff Officer.

Overall, I think you have a sharp looking uniform. However, before I can clear your uniform, I would like to request the following:

    • Could you please provide a picture of the modesty panel, showing that it contains 2 eye hooks
    • Could you please provide a picture of the front of the tunic, showing that there is a circumference seam
    • Most importantly. Your uniform, although impressively made, is a bit too wrinkled for my liking for an Executor promotion. I would highly recommend giving the uniform a good ironing/steaming to try and remove as many of the wrinkles as possible
    • Your jodhpurs are quite good, I especially like the flares. However, there is quite a bit of bunching at the top of the boots. If you haven't already, I would highly recommend adding stirrups to your jodhpurs to prevent this bunching.

If you could provide the requested photos above, along with new front, back and both side pictures with your newly ironed/steamed uniform, that would be most appreciated.

If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to ask me. Good luck!!

    Cheers,

Thanks! I do have stirrups already- I'll see what I can do about the bunching, and I'll take an iron to it and take some more photos.

  13. I have  an awesome pair of Lekku... but I feel like based on the history of Ryloth I'd have a hard time pulling off a Twi'lek Imperial :-P Honestly I've always assumed that the non-diverse representation in the Empire was purposeful, that there was discrimination against non-humans. Thrawn has a back story that explains how he overcame those prejudices. But all that being said, could make for some fun informal costumes.

  14. 5 hours ago, PArmstr said:

Yes, part of it is definitively terminology. Until a couple of months ago I thought that only the roundish seams that go from the waist seam to the armhole were called princess seams. Then an IOC member posted a link that showed how you could turn the waist and bust dart into a princess seam that goes from the waist seam to the shoulder.

Wow, you can draft you own patterns. I can only change an existing pattern to some extent. I tried to learn how to make my own patterns but the books that I have were not much help. :-(

I HIGHLY recommend online classes on Craftsy! I started with zero knowledge. In fact, I was so overwhelmed trying to modify existing patterns that I followed the advice of someone else on here to start with a sloper. While it's a ton of work to learn and get set up, I feel like once I finally finish I will sort of know what I'm doing.

I did a bodice sloper class (and it took probably 8-9 iterations of adjusting it until I got one that fit- but it was worth it), and I think there was also a jacket class. I just finished the pant sloper class because after trying 3-4 different patterns for the jodhpurs I realized I didn't know enough about pant construction to feel confident modifying those patterns.

The sticker price is high for Craftsy classes but there are always promos so just wait for those and then it's worth every penny.

  15. Awesome, thanks!

My boots are SUPER tight even after taking to a cobbler for stretching... so I'm thinking my next (hopefully final!) mockup I'll see if I can squeeze them on... if I can get by with just the pants I'll just sew elastic for stirrups on the final product.  Of course, laces probably won't help me if calf circumference is my limiter :| (

  16. I think maybe it's a terminology thing. To me- "princess seam" = a vertical (ish) seam along the front- adjusted to how it's needed based on darts for women. I've never tailored for a man but I'd assume you just don't really need darts, so the pattern pieces would be shaped a bit differently.

Maybe what I'm working on is similar to what Wombat is referring to....

Early mockup that sort of illustrates what I'm talking about.... "princess seams" are bordered by the front middle panel in the implementation for this tunic

    Pattern center front:

    36133024761_4cf56d92a2_k.jpgUntitled by sherrythax

Pattern outside front (includes fold-out for code cylinder pocket), topmost piece:

    35462985663_016121e6ac_k.jpgUntitled by sherrythax, on Flickr

If you look closely at that outside front piece you can see that I've cut the side dart and folded it out, so when I cut it in fabric it's not necessary to create an extra seam to get the shaping for the bust.

  17. I'm honing in on a final pattern for my pants, but I'm having trouble finding any pictures or detailed explanations of how people implement stirrups and laces on pants. Do you install grommets down the calf to lace up? Is the stirrup just a wide piece of elastic at the ankle? If anyone has any pointers I'd greatly appreciate it :)

  18. Maybe I'm missing something here, but... the reference picture for staff officer looks like it does have princess seams on the front. They just go to the shoulder rather than the armpit (which is what the ones in the back do). In order to accommodate for the side darts that an armpit princess seam would take in, I extend the vertical darts up to the shoulder and fold out the side dart, resulting in a curvy tunic that doesn't have extra seams. Maybe it's a terminology thing- CRL doesn't call them princess seams in front, but I think you should be able to account for all of your darts within the standard seams in the front of the tunic. Does this make sense?
