Aye. Generally its a Polygon issue

When we model characters in CG  we will usually make two (*more often in the past) the in game model had less polys due to the in-game model being live on screen.

The CG cut scene characters could be 100% different (yet the same) as they can have a ton more detail.

However Hask and another FO officer do not appear in the same scene which is causing an issue. If I could put the Generic FO model side by side we would see

However we can easily see the details pointed out in the photo prior even showing constriction on the tunic being completely different. Thats obvious and right on the chest :)

There's no doubt that Hask has more polys than the generic, you can see it in the edges of the costume (its super apparent in the curvature of the pants flares) but I still can't see them as being different costumes. :T

I appreciate that it was "intended" to be the Lieutenant, but clearly if you place the good shots we have now of movie Lieutenants next to Battlefronts officers, something got lost in translation.

If a character needs a certain number of differences from another uniform of the same rank, in order to warrant its own CRL, would this not then be applicable to the First Order Lieutenants and Captains from the movies? There is a far longer list of differences between TFA and TLJ grey uniforms, and yet not only do they have to share a rank, they all fall under one CRL rather than split between two CRL's. We didn't even HAVE captains available to us for reference when the CRL was published shortly after the release of TLJ and further analysis could be completed, but yet it got published anyway.

And I got it. I did. The costumes were -so similar- that yeah swap out the handful of differences and you're probably good. I was going to recommend or request a TLJ configuration to be added, since the list of differences is -so- broad, but there is ENOUGH THERE, for one CRL to do a vast majority of the work. Additionally, the Junior officer with one set of code cylinders could easily be a configuration. The vast majority is already there, configs are great and I love them, they work. Someone wants to be Canady? They'd use that CRL. Mitaka? Same CRL. If someone wanted to make and clear a Lieutenant and portray Finn in disguise! Same CRL!

I have to honestly ask why these two situations are being handled so differently.

As mentioned before LFL did not work on this game in any capacity. EA did. LFL licensed this material to them. If you guys can get that direct quote from EA it may have more cred? But the distinct differences in the models are intense.

Are Del Meeko and Iden the same model just cause ones a man and larger? If so should we have shoved that into one CRL? :)

Comparing the Infero Squad CRL's situation to this situation is like comparing chalk and cheese. There are massive differences in almost every single aspect of those character designs. They are individual and separate character designs. There is no argument there. Hask is the same guy in the same uniform as the generic. He's got more polys because he got the benefit of a few lines and didn't have the same ingame poly restrictions because he was fully pre-rendered. His textures are probably a vastly higher resolution as a result, too. It's still the same uniform. :T

I completely agree everything is scale. But that rank bar is freaking GIANT lol! Its hilariously giant! Because by all means the females would be smaller..

Ok lets go with this, im a woman I love making man costumes

and if a woman made a Hask would you not agree that...

I would need to change the design of the tunic and put the seam on the outside

I would have different code cils

I would have a rank bar twice the size of the other FO officer.

I would make my suit darker.

    Thoughts?

I've not cleared a female character yet so I know exactly where you're coming from!

My proposed CRL text specifies that the princess seam placement is -suggested- to be in that location for women. I'm saying allow both, since the same uniform appears and shows both locations. It appears where it does on a character presenting as female, because of breasts. It's a fitting thing, and it makes complete sense logically why Hask doesn't have the same seam placement. You move seams around a little to match the body of the wearer, but its still a uniform. The seams are still there.

Different code cylinders is a higher level of clearance I would say, I wouldn't put it in basic at all, ergo it's not important or required enough of a detail to warrant a different CRL. If someone wanted to use specifically cylinders without clips, it's something for a higher clearance level I'd say, since requiring that is going to require a fully custom set of cylinders, and adds really very little to the costume outside of a very high level of accuracy. Which is what higher clearance levels are for.

Rank bars I've already covered. References exist for both, allow both. TLJ black uniforms "admirals" until we know otherwise, use General stripes for whatever reason. XD Allow both! And if you wanted to make the suit darker for specifically Hask, that's fine too. Charcoal grey matching on screen reference, is charcoal grey matching on screen reference.

  2. Hmm, I definitely think that the differences in the references that someone could place side by side and compare will matter a lot. One set of comparisons could be entirely different from another set, depending on what you use.

    Differences

Color: Hasks color is slightly different. Darker. Almost all of him is just kinda a dull grey where as the generic has a very distinct color difference.

*You can visually see that the generic is much lighter in comparison to the belt and hasks looks opposite compared to the shiny belt.

Rank Bar: Hasks rank bar is tiny compared to the Generic

Belt/shoes: The rendering on Hask should be high gloss and the Generic should be medium shine.

Design: The tunic has different constriction.

Code Cils: There are hooks on one and not the other

Colour is a couple shades off. In footage of the generic officer running around Starkiller (The only time where both models appear in the same sort of lighting, cutscene or otherwise) the colours look similar. As with olive uniforms, and I foresee the same issue with grey FO movie uniforms, matching greys is going to be very difficult. It's a problem that will exist no matter the source of the costume. Especially depending on the references a person decides to use, it differs so wildly from lighting to lighting. Colour is already going to vary wildly from build to build. A CRL can only specify "charcoal grey" and as we've already seen from the Hask build thread, this can go all over the place. Unless we're going to require pantone colours which we've never done before. A person has to use their own judgement, based on what they see in the references they're working from, and their GML needs to clear it. I would put money on all future renditions of this costume, if lined up, would show an equal colour variance.

Rank bars are different, the generic appears to be stacked for some reason? Double thick? I covered this in my CRL proposal above. We've already had it suggested on the CRL thread for First Order Admiral (the black with the fold over at the front) that it contain both TFA and TLJ rank bars, since both are seen on that costume. How is this acceptable in that situation and not here?

Belt/Shoes - All of the leathers, whether they are shiny or not, or how shiny they are, is not really something I think should be adhered to for basic in any situation. Under that stipulation, the Hask CRL if he gets his own, would require a lighter set of leather belt, holster and boots (hat brim and gloves darker for some reason?) and if that is a specific difference between Hask/Generic that people want to point at when making a case for CRLs, I would want to very specifically see the specifics on leather in Hask's CRL. I feel that this is going to be subjective from person to person. "Belt/Boots/etc leather finish should match on screen references" should be enough? I also think that requiring a special, specific level of finish for Hask's belt, boots, and holster, is way above a basic clearance level. I'd even say Level 3. The difference in tone from his gloves and hat brim up there is enough to make the leather itself look grey, for example. That's a full custom set of boots, not just ImperialBoots Hux model, and a big ask.

Design - different construction? Aside from the fit of the uniform on the much slighter, smaller body of a woman, and the front princess seam placement (again, this is part of the tailoring and I can fully understand that placement decision from a design POV) I can't see where else it differs?

Code Cylinder hooks I'll admit isn't something I noticed, however considering the differences in Hask's code cylinders from First Order cylinders in general, and the fact that neither of the CRL texts proposed in this thread require the specific bent hooks that his have, clips or not shouldn't matter for basic. Not to mention I'd be concerned about keeping them in place since we'd have actual gravity to contend with rather than videogame magic.

We also have it from LFL that Hask is not special. He is a face character and he gets a few lines, but he is intended to be the same rank as the generics from multiplayer.

All it'd need, is this at the foot of a generic CRL with a front and back, just like Krennic's raincoat:

    Established alternate configuration:
    - Facial appearance, specifically hair, facial hair, and scarring.

    - Rank Bar is the thinner variant.

    - Front princess seams are to run around the outside of the code cylinders.

I think even requiring that a Hask spec have shinier leather components, or specific hooks on his code cylinders, is too much for basic. Unless configs could start having their own higher levels? Starts getting messy. You could go as far as specifying "- Charcoal grey fabric for the uniform should be darker" or something for the fabric here but I'm not sure it warrants it.

Four lines is all you need. :T

EDIT: In addition, that graphic there utilises shots of the generic under a vast array of different lighting situations. And one shot from character select where the model is a holo-projection so shouldn't count as a true ref for colour. Hask references utilise two from the same cutscene where he appears indoors, and one extremely high resolution render. It's not exactly the most balanced set of references to put next to one another. :S

  3. For the record, regarding removal:

It won't come off easy, because if you go Endura it's made to stay on. Try not to panic, try not to scrub yourself raw, but it's gonna take some time to come off completely so make time in your plans post-troop for removal unless you're fine being a bit blue after. The advice above of "spray remover, wait, rub", is solid. Even if it doesn't feel like it's coming off quickly enough, it does take time! In your removal kit, make sure you include q-tips (for your ears and inside of your nose XD) and cotton pads for towards the end (paper towels at the beginning for the majority). Also invest in a good moisturiser and rub a good dollop in everywhere you painted blue. Twice later in the day even. Your skin will thank you!

I'm no expert but I was painted blue to accompany a  Thrawn and Ar'alarni as Thrass a few months ago. Endura lasted the entire time (About four hours for me) and there was absolutely no transfer on any of the clothes I was wearing (and my shirt was a crew-cut collar jersey shirt so we had to paint down my neck and onto my chest a bit inside of the shirt, no transfer!)

Also, and this goes for anyone wanting to up their makeup game not just with Thrawn (although for Thrawn and Chiss it makes such a huge, huge difference!), learning to contour will raise your game from "oh hey a Thrawn!" to "oh my god, look at that Thrawn! Wow!" I promise you. <3 You don't even have to fully blue-up to practice. Applying and blending you can do just on your face as-is. :) It'll just look very weird. XD

EDIT: while you're practising makeup techniques, it doesn't hurt to get yourself used to having things touching around your eyes and wearing product around your eyes. Desensitising yourself to applying eyeliner or even just brushing clean q-tips around your eyelid area and waterline is going to really help ensure a solid coverage, right up to the eyeline. If the Endura is too intense to put that close to your eyes, work that area over with powders and blue makeups to get it as close as you can without rubbing alcohol paint in there. XD PLUS then you'll be able to apply that red eyeliner and it's another small detail. :D

While we are at it, I've always been wondering about this, would it be possible to add the dart on the front tunic into the CRL? Probably an L2 requirement. It's on every other OT tunic, but not Krennic?

It's easy to see in every image of Krennic. Example:

    Cp5gghM.jpg

Wait, it's been missing the whole time??? O.o
That's like, part of Imperial Tunic 101!

I’ve been playing Battlefront 2 every day since it came out.  This past month they are rolling out updates and new skins for even the regular troopers. Size aside for gender, I can see the first order officer being a generic character for men and women with face characters being level 3 just like line and staff officers for the empire.

That would be in line with what we already do

I'm pretty sure @Paggeldiwwer summed it up pretty well on an earlier post in the thread. If we do a CRL for every named character in a uniform, it starts getting out of control. I think unless we get some extreme circumstances it'll be how all iterations of a new uniform should probably go. Uniforms are called "Uniform" for a reason.

  6. Evening everyone!

As the build thread for this particular costume here on the IOC is wrapping up, I think it's time we resurrect the CRL discussion. I've been Kris' armourer over on his UKG WIP thread and have done a ridiculous level of research into the costume to make sure I could give informed and adequate advice and assistance. That in  mind, I'd like to make the following proposal on the CRL's text.

This text takes into account several things:
    - Kris' original CRL text proposed in the beginning of this thread.
    - A large amount of research undertaken by myself, of which I am happy to provide details and references of should any part of the text need proving, elaborating upon, or rewording. I've made several suggestions towards reasonable (imo) Level 2/3 standards but accept that things are moved around by LMO's as part of their formatting and overseeing of the CRL process. :)
    - The fact that I strongly and firmly believe that the Battlefront 2 First Order uniform should be a sole, singular CRL.

This would make the costume available to those who wish to make a generic, to those who wish to portray male or female BF2 FO officers, and to those specifically wanting to portray Hask. It is additionally worth noting that Battlefront 2 (the game) could at any point start to offer players the ability to customise their multiplayer "generic" FO officer further. A "generic" male body type may be made available. It's possible that they fully remodel another male body however my money is on them using Hask's, as it already exists. This would mean that both "male" and "female" versions of the uniform would exist. Yes the female model used as the generic multiplayer at present has differences to Hask, however there are two differences, and they are extremely minor. One of them is a fitting issue, regarding the location of the princess seams on the front of the tunic (you see the same differences between male and female First Order officers in TLJ). It's already come up in this thread previously, that Hask himself could easily be an appearance configuration for this CRL, which would then immediately open the costume up to all men, women, -and- those who particularly want to portray Hask.

Being as this has been handed over several times in this thread as "an LMO decision" I'd like to invite our LMO Liason to weigh in! :)@Hux

Without further ado, the text (I'm sorry it's mostly lumped to the left, I can't figure out how to copy it in and remove that without losing all my formatting!):

  7. Originally I walked out of TFA a complete and utter Kylo Ren fan. Kylo Ren sparked my interest in making a screen accurate costume from scratch (well, as much as I could) and it all sort of snowballed from there. Big time!

After going away and consuming most of what the internet had to offer with regards to the Kylo fandom, I noticed that Hux popped up a lot. He'd actually managed to reasonably pass me by on my first watch! A week or so after first seeing TFA, I went back to the cinema to watch it again, and was completely smitten with Hux and the First Order as a whole. The uniforms were slick, interesting, and I've always been a sucker for the villains. (Also that -coat-, and the entire speech scene ughh <3) I love the variety of FO costumes, even though all the variants and consistency (or lack thereof) also drive me completely insane. I went and devoured all of the canon backstory available for Hux and just fell more and more for his ruthlessness and ambition. His tenacity, cunning and ability to persevere are all traits I admire and aspire to emulate, even out of costume tbh. First Order costumes are also pretty rare around my neck of the woods and I love how the FO costumers band together, appreciate one another, and how crazy the crowds at appearances and troops go when they see a squad of us all together. The people love the First Order! :DEspecially now that more people know who Hux is after TLJ. >.>

I was halfway through my Kylo build and I at the time I'd wanted to switch tracks and start on Hux, but I saw Kylo through to the end. I cleared Kylo as my first 501st costume! From there, I was determined to make Hux my second costume and unfortunately for Kylo I've not worn that costume very much since! XD TLJ brought me some more much needed First Order (and Hux!) content and the costumes looked even slicker. A full remake is eventually on the cards to get my TLJ Hux-coat game on!

Hux was only the beginning. Eventually I'm hoping to get several Imperial costumes completed including the great white spacebat himself Director Krennic. I also want to get more First Order costumes under my belt! I'm well and truly in love with everything that the officers of the various factions throughout the Star Wars universe can offer, and I'm definitely here for the long term. :D

  8. I know this is for Imperial tattoos but. ;)

Just a small one for me, but I already have some really cool plans for new ink. :) I got this at Celebration 2017 (like AT the con :D), to commemorate all of the amazing, wonderful people that this crazy hobby has brought into my life. 20 years of the 501st Legion. 40 years of Star Wars. (And also the very recent clearance of my Hux costume which I'd spent the last five or so months making in time to troop alongside my 501stfamily at Celebration). So, it's small but it means a lot to me. <3

  9. Swapping around heads on helmetless characters was doable in Battlefront, so makes sense that it exists in BF2, nice to see it affecting armoured classes and not just the faces beneath (I think armour in BF only got to swap between a male and female preset of the same armour set?)

It's in there, so I figure eventually it'll come out? Either as unlocks in the loot crates that they say they are bringing back in, or through playing the game, who knows.

  10. Aye a Veers costume (or similar, if not Veers himself) is covered by an entirely different detachment. It's.. complicated, haha.

There are a handful of face character officers (Pryce, Tarkin and Thrawn specifically) who don the same armour in Rebels. I believe someone is also working on an "armoured officer" from Battlefront 2, so there mayyyy be some armour creeping into the IOC soon. Nobody has told the folks building these costumes with this armour that there will be any real issue or sent them elsewhere I don't think, so it's a "wait and see" for what happens for this armour regarding CRLs. :D

Whatever you decide to do, welcome! And good luck with your build. :)

  11. Oof, I'm genuinely impressed that the seams not matching up is how they've gone with this!

Rose's Major costume lines up beautifully. As does the FOSB. The two decent examples of the foldover we can see in the visual dictionary.

I mean. The only two upper body shots we've ever seen of the admiral include this wonky seam misalignment. Maybe it -is- legit? Urgh my kingdom for a costume designer to talk to about this!  XD

I'm still reeling over the lack of adherence to the given rank bar system in the TFA visual dictionary with his rank bars. I'm really struggling to believe that Hux was that special a snowflake that he got entirely his own uniform. But like, maybe? There are so many unknowns here. So many "why?!" questions!

Definitely!  They took the time to make the thing, and dedicated photos and space to it in the VG.  It would be astounding it it's truly not listed ANYWHERE else.

They did also make a special First Order tea mug which I don't think I spotted although I will definitely be looking in future. XD Will see what the 4k release eagle-eyed spotters can see!

VD is canon though -so while I understand this, if we go that route then anything not on screen (Comics for example) is out as well.

Scale is needed yes - but I haven’t sat down and watched the deleted scenes yet and I think that’s where they are.

Aye, I'm hoping we can spot it somewhere! Even just in the background or something. I do think that an Ipad cover size and shape is a good shout, it makes sense! But confirmation would be good. :D

  14. The junior officer outside of the elevator is holding something completely different. It's listed just above her photo in the visual dictionary, I think.
The little pointy arrow pointing at the thing in her arms lists it as: Operations Division status datapad.

The bigger top-down photo in the visdic just above her is the chunky thing called a First Order Encoder Pad.
They do look very similar, and not much like the datapad we're looking at in this post.

The security sealed datapad which has been so wonderfully recreated here, appears next to Finn later on in the visual dictionary. Unfortunately it's not in anyones hands so we can't get much of an idea of scale. It's also only listed as: "security sealed officers datapad" so no restriction on rank.

If we're going to see this anywhere, it'll be in the background of a scene, or possibly when Finn Rose and DJ are apprehended on the Supremacy? It appears on the same set of pages as the FOSB so that might be a good hint?

    Here we go!

It's saved my life several times with writing and getting things straight
The same person also put together this AWESOME timeline for the events of the book and how they interact with the rest of the canon

However since it basically tells the whole plot of the book, I'm just gonna leave it as a link here and keep spoilers at a minimum for people who haven't read it yet

    https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/11S71i6RiwC_yg6eueQ6AxKLJeSBgDZnuqP83iEUz-9E/edit#gid=223787102

Love this! I found it hard keeping up with Thrawn (and Vanto's) rise in rank through the book, so the timeline is super useful!

I think Thrawn is actually one of the few SW books I've read but don't actually own... I just stole @Tentayena's when he made me read it lolol and now look at what I've become.

I for one blame Ensign Vanto.

Seriously though, I've STRUGGLED with a lot of StarWars lit in the past. I really want to choke my way through Aftermath because of obvious ginger reasons, however thin on the ground they are, but its just such a bloody chew to read? It's so clunky? Thrawn just read like an absolute DREAM with minimal "you must be this much Star Wars to ride".

I need to get off my ass and finish the Heir trilogy... I'm super hyped for Alliance though and really jealous that you'll all get fancy B&N hardback covers as usual. :C

Aye. I'm just very adamant about it being called something else other than his 'rank'. ^.-

Thanks luvs for all your hard work,

    Dawn

While fair, since it's not a definite just yet, I'm just... uncomfortable with having one without a rank? If that makes sense? Since all the others for FO follow that sort of pattern!
