  1. 501st was pretty standard. I had made a Kylo Ren cosplay and took it to one of our bigger local cons. Ended up meeting a few members and they encouraged me to join since my costume was just about there. It then took me 4 months to actually join because my boots were lost in the void.

And I loved it, but Kylo is a bit of a beast to wear. And with my health not being the best, I started looking into costumes that would be a bit physically easier to wear. And since we had a few other Kylos in my garrison, I settled on Hux as my next build.

Found a lovely person to build it, paid for it, got a wig and all the needed things for the costume.... Then did a makeup test one day and it took 3 entire hours to get my eyebrows ginger. And I was not about that life. A friend suggested that I try Mitaka instead, since we had similar features and demeanors. I was here for it. And it required much less makeup wizardry.

@rattleandburn was an absolute gift and switched what she was making, and then I had to track everything else down.

Interestingly, I actually ended up getting approved in the IOC with my line officer first, and then submitting the first order LT about a week after, but that 100% was not the intention. Esp since I need to go back and remake that whole uniform.

That's disappointing. I have the audiobook and my plan was to start listening this week (after I finish this history podcast).

See, I tore through it in two days and had a grand time of it lol

It's definitely different (and throws a wrench in some of the older stuff, but I'll survive I GUESS)

They included some really fun throwbacks to the Hand of Thrawn dualogy, among some really enjoyable twists and turns

  3. Some of the best advice I was ever given for costuming overly serious/slightly intimidating characters.
"Head up, shoulders back, walk like you've just been sent to kill Captain America."

It worked very well for Kylo, but I found it carried over pretty nicely for officers as well (if not better. Apparently I have a somewhat intense face if I make an attempt)

The other piece of advice I can give is develop your officer's character! If you know who they are, what their likes and dislikes are, and how they behave, you'll have a way easier time and people get really into it. My First Order officer is really freaked out by Kylo. I've had small children try to fight him for me. It's adorable and they love it.

  4. Just poking my head in to throw out a few more vendors for First Order boots, mostly because the quality on the imperialboots is somewhat less than desired.

Gio at Crow Props has begun taking commissions for First Order officer boots around the same price point as IB, and are custom made to you.
Or, if money isn't an issue (I know it was somewhat for you specifically, but I just want to throw these out for anyone who might be lurking) Magnoli Clothiers recently released these

My wallet still hurts looking at them tbh.

    Also re. Gloves
They look good to me! The flair on the gauntlet might be a bit tricky to tuck into a sleeve, but provided the leather is soft enough, i don't see it barring anything approval wise

and forgive me if it has been mentioned already, but they're depicting both Thrawn and Vanto as having Blue over Red.

I actually had never noticed this before, but I had a second and flipped through the older comics and in issue #2 it has red over blue, then switches to Blue over red in issue #3. I haven't read the new issue yet, but the screencaps seem to indicate that it stayed that way.

    Colorist error maybe?
    Unsure
That's a really good catch though, I didn't even notice!!

If someone is willing to make an "ISB style" olive-green uniform, its definitely a possibility

Just popping in to toss in my two cents

It would be /extremely/ easy to modify an existing line officer uniform to the ISB style.
I have a spare cosplaysky uniform that I've had lying around for a bit to harvest for hat fabric (they messed up measurements and let me keep it)
I'd be more than willing to make a quick tutorial if there's interest?

  7. This is an absolutely incredible list, holy heck

I've also done a lot of body paint over the years and I really can't say enough good things about using Endura for chiss. It does take a bit of practice to get the hang of applying it right, but the fact that I'm not panicking about it rubbing off on clothes or other people is honestly worth the learning curve. Especially when there's a white uniform involved.

Question is, how on earth do I even begin trying to put this to the Powers That Be to suggest the idea of a twi'lek officer? I am completely clueless on how to proceed.

    Honestly?
Talk to your GML and your CO, see what they say. If you have any instances of twi'lek officers showing up, either in canon, comics, books, etc, use that to back up your argument.

If anything, you may not be able to wear the config for official troops, but could wear it at cons!
That's what I do with First Order DJ. He's not an established configuration by 501st standards, but cons are a little more lax. It really does just depend on your garrison's view on things.

Thank you so much for this! that is a lot of changes and no its relevant. I appreciate it. I kept asking and no one would tell me :P I also agree a board needs to be made.

We've been slowly working on compiling everything!!
I wanted to have all the references and such ready when we made a thread, I've just been pretty sick and have been slower than usual.
But that'll be happening in the nearish future, just gotta finish combing through the TLJ blu ray lol

  10. I honestly think that makes sense. The wording is very clear on the pictures, and there ARE pictures for the different items, which is nice. I think if there were not photo examples to show for the differences, it would be much more confusing.

Personally, I think it reads fine, but I can understand the worry.

At my first meetup with Garrison Titan, I was strongly encouraged to pursue a non-human Officer build - it was implied that there's a bit of a rivalry between a few garrisons for who has the most aliens. I think a lot of that focus is probably on the Saber Guild side, where it makes more sense, but I felt encouraged all the same!

Though my partner keeps saying, "You know you really just want to be Thrawn," and they're not wrong...

As one of the few alien Saber Guild members, always more aliens!!

The comics have helped a lot, I think
I'll wear Horrible Clashing Line Officer Thrawn and people get a kick out of it. And I can be ridiculously offended at the color combo. It's a good time

  12. I asked my CO about this when I was curious about the idea of down a lower ranked Thrawn. This was before the comics had come out, and there was some question about what color uniform he'd be in (I only have a line officer cleared at this point in time)

I know a lot of the lore around Thrawn centered around him being one of (if not the only) non human officer in the Empire, but I was told that since there was one, I could be a generic Chiss officer if I wanted to. I know RL holds the same views. there was one chiss jedi, so i can clear as my chiss OC.

This was just for chiss specifically, but I think the general rule, at least for my garrison, was if there was one, there could be others?

3.The case of the FO Lut was because there is  no difference between the costume Mitaka uses and the costume any other FO Lut in TFA uses.

I just want to clarify what I was saying, because there seems to be some confusion.

My issue was not that there would be a Face Character CRL for Hask when there wasn't one for Mitaka, I fully understand why that happened and my intent was not to push for that. Apologies if it came off that way!

My question was more regarding that the number of differences between the Generic FO Lieutenant and the Generic FO Captain are very close to the amount of differences between Hask and a Generic Battlefront FO officer, and the live CRL for the former seems to be doing just fine. I'm just trying to figure out where the line for combining CRL's vs splitting them apart is, if that makes sense?

Maybe the solution is to split the Captain and the LT and leave these two separate then?

  14. Figured I’d chime in a bit here, and maybe add a little bit as to why people are upset and confused about what’s going on here.

I will fully admit, I was somewhat upset that the Lieutenant CRL became a generic. I was upset that it added an entirely second rank. I was mostly upset that the face character spec was removed. But at the time, the references for Captain were near nonexistent, and I understood that while there were differences, the two costumes were close enough that there was no point in splitting them. And that the character I was trying to portray was so minor, that I doubted anyone aside from me would care.

The logic of combining them made sense, at the time. Same with the Major/Colonel crl. And while I didn’t work on or help with it, the Krennic crl combining the three different configs for the costume made sense. So did the work on the alternate Ysanne configs, or the debate to add a helmetless option to the Cadet after the Thrawn comic (which I don't actually know if anything was decided on that but that's neither here nor there). Even when TLJ came out and we started noticing differences in the uniforms, the gloves, the hats, etc. Everything seemed minor enough that it didn’t warrant a whole new crl for what’s nearly the same costume.

If this was the new normal and each CRL was held to the same standard, I would be more than willing to accept it.

    But then this happens.

I fully, 100% agree that the costumes have differences.

I do not, however, agree that they should have two separate CRLs while some of these other CRLs remain combined. Especially when the existing CRLs have just as many differences and seem to be functioning just fine.

The consistency is the issue here for me.

And maybe the solution is to split some of the other CRL’s up. I know I’ve been picking apart TLJ and have a sizeable list of updates for the Captain.

But picking and choosing like this is confusing. And it causes disputes like this, because from an outside perspective, it looks bad.
I know that's not the intention. I know everyone who is here cares for the Legion with their whole hearts.

But the handling of these issues is so blatantly different, when the issue, at it's core, is so similar.

This is based off of experience in the army.  You star at the bottom and work your way up.  It's like seeing a 25 year old general or admiral in a movie. It looks weird.

At the same time, we're costumers, not the actual army. We look weird anyways.

    @ OP
As a general statement, It doesn't matter. It's really whatever you're comfortable with. If you have fallen in love with the white uniform, be the best Grand Admiral you can be!!

I know others have mentioned developing backstories for their officer personas, and honest to god, I think that's the best way to go. Develop your character. Give them history, mannerisms, quirks. It just makes the experience so much more FUN for you and everyone around you.
