My line officer was my first approved costume, but I had been working on my FO lieutenant for so much longer, so I'm gonna talk about that one instead.

I originally REALLY wanted to be Hux.
Loved the character, loved the big coat, and we have a good handful of Kylos in my area so I thought it would be fun. Got the process started, paid for the costumento be made, and one day decided to do a makeup test.

It took me 3 hours to get my eyebrows to be anywhere light enough to be ginger.

So that kind of put a damper on things because ain't nobody got time for that. And at the time the generic general CRL didn't exist. It was Hux or nothing

Then a friend of mine and I watched TFA together and she suggested the LT. After all, I looked a lot like Mitaka already and our mannerisms were very similar. So that kicked off several months of pouring research into a costume that was on screen for maybe 3 minutes total. And I loved it. Loved every second of it. I made dear friends and learned so much about costuming while putting this together, and it was just an incredible experience all around.

And when I got to put the completed costume on for the first time, it just felt right. In a way that none of my other approved costumes ever have. I love how it looks and how I feel in it, and it makes me proud.

It wasn't an easy process by any means, but the results were more than I could have ever hoped for. And it was all for a background character that no one remembers, but I love him all the same.

Grey uniforms... they have always been there, though they have meant different things and came different sources.  I am not about to say what is (because the shifting sands of what IS always changes), but will show how we got to this point and what happened along the way.

The first grey officer we saw was in the movie A New Hope.  He wore a 451 style tunic, but with black breeches and a black hat like the ISB.

The same actor in the same uniform meets with Tarkin prior to the destruction of Alderaan.

The first merchandised figure was the "Death Squad Commander" which was quickly renamed the "Star Destroyer Commander".  While this guy never showed up in the movies, he found himself in licensed material down through the years.  He is a special unit that can be built in the video game "Empire at War".

They also appeared in the comic adaptation of "Splinter of the Mind's Eye" as Vader's personal bodyguards.

The first description of who the grey uniformed officers were was found in the "Imperial Sourcebook" published by West End Games in 1988.  They were listed as the imperial Army.

The West End Games Death Star Technical Manual published in 1991 showed what Army soldiers looked like.  If you have seen the recent photos of the Mud Troopers in the upcoming Solo film, you will notice the similarities to the Trooper in Field Armor.  These were the books given out by Lucasfilm to guide new Star Wars authors like Timothy Zahn.

As the 1990s went on, grey uniformed officers showed up in the comics and in video games.

the early 2000's saw an Imperial Army general leading several officers in green while he was in grey.

General Zeiring ironically showed the promotion scale used today in the movies.  He promotes Lt. Sunbur to Captain, then commander...

2008 saw the release of The Clone Wars with Clone officers in grey.  Human officers wore the green.

they reappeared in the Battlefront II game.

The first official return of the grey uniforms came with Governor Pryce of Lothal in the Rebels animated series.  The grey choice could be said to be something different than the Imperial Navy, but the real reason for the color of her uniform and the style and color of her hair is to mimic Colonel Doctor Spalko, the bad guy from the last Indiana Jones movie.

Grey Uniforms started to appear in other areas.  Cadet Vanto in the Thrawn novel comic adaptation is shown in a grey uniform standing next to a green one.

The Imperial officers in Battlefront II are in army grey... and contrast with the green officers of the previous game.

I'll add to this over time.  The purpose was to show where all this stuff comes from.

As Kris says: Up to your local garrison.  And how formal the troop is, of course.

And as always, anything goes, at Cons.

Our discussion mostly concerns whether it could be added to the CRL as a formal, recognized accessory.  It's looking like we'll need more than just the one single photo to take it to THAT level.  (If added to the CRL, at that point you COULD bring it anywhere, even formal Canon events)

Your question on those specific boots was answered; but if you're already considering the idea of a cobbler, be aware then that any boot that has a back seam on the shaft can be brought in on the calf - if that's the main reason you can't go for other boot options, seek out a cobbler in your area with pics and discuss your options.

    -Bump-

When this was originally posted, Mark immediately then posted the thread re: no updates until staff changeovers etc were finished. As we are updating and discussing things obviously that timeframe was passed and I want to re-open this issue.

All the data and reference has been presented, as well as Hound's opinion as the creator/model of the existing CRL.

How do we wish to proceed on this matter?

I presented it as a generic change, as in all should be able to do this thing with the reference applied. We have since discussed a separate CRL as Hound's was intended to be specifically a singular character (I was not pushing a CRL here). If the former, then it should be a very quick change given all the reference material available. If the latter (and potentially with changes regarding how it was interpreted in animation versus comic form), then can we discuss to proceed? It was a purely theoretical discussion to open up availability of the uniform a bit; but now I have this cadet uniform in progress and want to know what to do with it - as it was intended specifically for Cadet Thrawn as seen in the ref.

I'd love to see this added to the CRL, but I think for the sake of both accuracy and creators/vendors/buyers spending time and resources on this article, we should do some legwork in contacting the Powers That Be to try to get a definitive size range on it, as its not seen on screen.

We included Hux's blaster as per TFA vis dic when it was not seen in use until TLJ, but in that case we knew that it was the blaster already seen on screen, painted differently, and could then know how to replicate it correctly. Vis dic pics arent necessarily to scale.

We see some really big data pads in TLJ, and in the other non-CRL thread discussion on this we had people supposing it could be small (phone/passport wallet size) and Nathaniel assumed A4 (which seems a good assumption imo).  I think we just need to clarify a vague size range -i.e. is it more iPhone or iPad- before we put it out there

However since it basically tells the whole plot of the book, I'm just gonna leave it as a link here and keep spoilers at a minimum for people who haven't read it yet

The junior officer outside of the elevator is holding something completely different. It's listed just above her photo in the visual dictionary, I think.
The little pointy arrow pointing at the thing in her arms lists it as: Operations Division status datapad.
The bigger top-down photo in the visdic just above her is the chunky thing called a First Order Encoder Pad.
They do look very similar, and not much like the datapad we're looking at in this post.

The security sealed datapad which has been so wonderfully recreated here, appears next to Finn later on in the visual dictionary. Unfortunately it's not in anyones hands so we can't get much of an idea of scale. It's also only listed as: "security sealed officers datapad" so no restriction on rank.

If we're going to see this anywhere, it'll be in the background of a scene, or possibly when Finn Rose and DJ are apprehended on the Supremacy? It appears on the same set of pages as the FOSB so that might be a good hint?
