Hi everyone, in order to help me understand the numerous variants of the black uniforms & what costume components could be used in other configurations, I created the Shared Components Matrix.  That black flight suit is quite ubiquitous!  I hope you find this useful.

It's not an official 501st document, just something I put together to help current & aspiring members.  The CRL is always the official reference which goes into more detail than I could include here.

(It has been pointed out that "Navy Trooper - Dress Uniform" isn't included; it would have made the matrix 3 columns wider due to all its own variations, and I had to stop somewhere...!)  So it's not

Thanks to @tristanuk and my garrison GML for providing feedback before being finalized, much appreciated.

Here in Australia, (likely taken from the UK regs) Navy can have a full beard only (not just a mo).

A tip: Any shoe repair place should be able to punch a hole for you, probably for free, or least a very small cost, as long as you mark exactly where to punch it.  A leather-working supplies store (like Tandy, here in the US) will often also have a tool handy that can do the same.

That said, a simple leather punch like the one pictured above can be had for under $10, and is a handy tool to have in your arsenal.

Personally, I trimmed to size, and prefer it that way.  I do have a little bit of extra if I gain too much weight, so I could add another hole and let it out more.  But if you leave the end long, what happens is this: On the right side of the buckle, you have ONE layer of leather going under it (the free end, with the hole in it).  On the left side of the buckle, you have THREE layers of leather, because the left side of the belt is already doubled just to loop around the buckle's loop and back to the rivet.  Plus the extra end of the free end.  This forces the buckle to sit at an angle on your front, since the left is pushed out so much further than the right.

If you trim the belt to end just before the buckle's loop on the left, you only have 2 layers compared to 1, which doesn't torque the buckle as much.

    Here's my belt, to illustrate:

(also do yourself a favor and put velcro between the belt and the inside of the buckle, because the belt pivots very easily on the center peg)

I just ended up using a power screwdriver, a drill bit the size of the peg, and some clamps.

    Daniel,
Nope that's a great way to do it. I have done this my my belt as well. I have it doubling over itself on the inside and velcroed to itself. That way it can be adjusted out as needed.

    Peter,
Just food for thought. When making your hole don't make your belt too tight. This will bunch your tunic and give it a sloppy look. Rather make it just tight enough to comfortably go around your tunic without squeezing. You can add velcro on your tunic and the inside of your belt to keep it up and in place. This will look sharp. Have fun!

There is a lot of great information and debate going on here. Thank you folks, to everyone, for keeping it civil!
I think that with decent images available this could be a simple set of modifications to an existing CRL. The Science Officer was created generic for a reason, it is not a Galen Erso face character for a reason. We assumed it was a form of dress that others in the wide range of the Imperial Military would have. We keep the shirt, open it up to any single rank bar, and keep the hat off. Basically we should be able to modify the title to Service Dress, add a black (staff) version, and have a nice, compact CRL that could have a VERY positive impact for IOC Recruitment. I have come to the conclusion that this is by far the swiftest way to get this canon uniform approved.

Hello again. Some more great news from one of the costume designers, David Crossman.  I asked him specifically about this type of outfit, and he stated the below...
I confirmed this the case for ISB, Staff, and Line.  All can wear this 'semi formal dress' and the hat is optional and they can ALL wear the single cuff collarless shirt.  And, rank doesn't matter.

I hope this helps.  I am just flabbergasted that he actually responds to me.  I've corresponded with him 3 times now (and he's responded quickly) and I told him I wouldn't bombard him anymore with questions... but it's so hard not to, lol.  He seems very friendly and open to the questions.  It was funny because I emailed someone else and they just happened to know Mr. Crossman and put me in touch with him.  I didn't think he'd even respond once, but he has and it's pretty cool.

For fun, the rest of the conversation was about fleet troopers (which is what well call all the Navy Troopers it seems).

The black tunics that were worn by the officers in ANH were borrowed form Bermans. Those tunics were originally used in the British movie Fahrenheit 451 from 1966. The movie was based on the novel Fahrenheit 451 from 1953.
