  1. Hello,

I’m brand new and working on my first costume. I was planing on an Imperial Security Services Officer (Non-Saga) version 1, and was planning on ordering my accessories from Bailey Builds based on recommendations from local garrison members.

My real question is how do people choose ranks? I’d like something in the middle of the range since if this was real life based on my age I’d be in the back half of my career. I’m also worried about guessing wrong since to my untrained eye the rank bars are very similar.

Would this work with my ISS costume? I’m still looking for a breakdown of the various colors and placement just so I can start to understand the logic like with IRL military rank badges. My thought was I have a couple of peers who are majors in the army so having someone in their 40s show up with the equivalent of oak leaves doesn’t seem too crazy. Or if someone can point me to the ISS equivalent of captains bars I would be grateful. https://ezrabaileybuilds.com/products/imperial-rank-badge-major-star-wars-officer-costume-push-button

    Thanks in advance.

  2. Hello,

Apologies if this isn't quite the best spot for these questions, but I thought the people who would know the answers might be here. I am still in the process of joining up, and working on my first approvable costume.  I've been building costumes and historic uniforms for over a decade so I'm feeling pretty comfortable executing this build from a technical standpoint.  Looking through the various reference guides I did have several questions that were not covered, and I'm hoping someone with the uniform might be able to answer them.

I decided on Costuming:Temp-Imperial-Staff-Officer (Non Saga) - Databank (501st.com), (version 1) as my first build.  In looking through the various guides it looks to be essentially the same uniform as Costuming:ID imperial officer black nco - Databank (501st.com) (version 2), and Costuming:ID imperial officer - Databank (501st.com) (in black vs olive of course).  Is my logic sound? They are contemporaries within the original trilogy era, and I was thinking like IRL military the uniforms within the same branch they would be pretty standard aside from some insignia. Or is there something different about them that is more obvious in person? I'm looking for reference photos and the more versions of the uniform I can find the better even if it is a different character.

I looked on the forum for patterns I didn't really find anything that was apples to apples--aside from the hat pattern.  Which, since I'm not a very experienced milliner I'm grateful for an existing pattern.  Did I just miss a recommended tunic or pants pattern? I'm a little overwhelmed since there is so much on here.

The reference does not specify material, is wool preferred, or do most people go with a poly, or a blend suiting? I have a light-weight black wool suiting already that I would like to use, unless there is a particular fabric from a particular source people are fond of.

For the jods, it mentions that they may have pockets as long as they are not visible. I was curious about placement and size--back pockets, in seam side pockets?   Also, do people typically make them with zip or button fly?

The jacket is going to take the most trial and error, but I've got a 19th century Irish Guards coat pattern I've made before that actually has about 80% of the same seaming so it will not require a ton of alterations to get me there--aside from drafting the front piece of course.  I am guessing the tunic has a load bearing closure center front, (hidden under the flap that snaps at the shoulder), for the center closure do people typically use buttons/snaps/hook and eye/velcro/zippers? If someone is willing to take a picture of the inside of their tunic that would be a huge help.

How difficult is it to get various levels approved? Looking at the tunic I feel like level two/three would actually make it easier to tailor the uniform to a female frame since it has the hidden waist seam and the center front dart. Also, just from a practical standpoint I was planning to line it anyway.  You need to apply for xyz level or is it just a matter of meeting criteria?

I'm sure I'll have more questions once I start mocking up the pieces. Thank you in advance for any feedback.

    Heather
