When we are so beholden to this stuff, we quench any and all hype for the costume.  I’ve seen it many times (also in our active CRL library I’m sure you could pick out dozens of costumes with worse references than this one).

Yes we may get a back reference in the future.  MAY.  But if we do it will be way too late and this will be a single digit costume rather than one that could result in a new crop of people getting approved.

Let members make this costume, and if we ever get references that contradict the CRL, update it at that time.  We are losing an entire generation of costumers interested in First Order and Sith Eternal costuming by being overly dogmatic on our CRL process.

Hi, bargain basement SWAT team Lt. Sunber here.

For what it's worth, under the "Character Approval" in the "CRL and New Costume Survival Guide", it states:

The way it's written, it sure sounds like some leeways can be given. A full back reference is not required as some have stated on this thread. Legion costumes have had a track record of getting updated over the years as more reference materials emerge. A "complete ensemble" costume and CRL has been developed closely following available reference images. Just my two cents - when there are conflicting opinions I like to draw people back to the original text (to take feelings and assumptions out of the equation).

Can’t agree more. Being in the same garrison as the one who has been working on this costume, I was super excited for it and would have followed as soon as the crl was greenlit.

    Now?

Well I guess I’m staying with my bridge crew as my ONLY IOC costume.

Disappointed in the lmo’s for this. Disappointed in the sheer ridiculous nature of the call.

I applaud the update but PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE on this and other Officer CRLS (but especially this one since the reference I’m talking about is specifically from Rogue One) - make the hat optional!

There are officers with black, olive, and white uniforms on screen who do not wear their hats.  Making it required instead of optional only makes us GMLs punish people for trying to replicate a specific character or specific look with verifiable on screen reference (that’s even ignoring all the comic references of officers without hats).  Tarkin’s attaché in Rogue One is just one example but there are plenty of others.  We don’t have “Face Officer” CRLs in IOC and instead do that in the Level 3 so saying “you have to be doing this officer specifically to not need the hat” doesn’t make sense at the GML level.

Black uniformed officers have been seen in the comics a multitude of times with double stacks (and in official artwork as seen above).  No, they aren’t seen in ANH...but they exist, there’s no denying it.  To be honest if you can match a specific comics officer configuration I don’t see why those can’t eventually be accepted for level 2 and 3 as well (I’d say the same for Rebels with the red code cylinders and interesting ranks, but it seems those will be a different CRL).

Although I joined the Legion as a Tusken, the officer was the first costume I had (and the only one I wore for many years) that I actually enjoyed.

For me it’s the officers in ESB.  They are very professional even in the face of Vader’s short leash and their failures.  Helps that the uniform is slick as heck if it fits right!

Motoss reacted to buckrogersbarker in The History of Moffs
Moff is military and political title for a sector leader. It originates from the days of the Old Republic.  As the Republic would expand outward and incorporate new systems they woulc occasionally encounter warlords or kings that would control entire sectors.  These leaders were given the title of Moff to help them integrate into the Republic.  Eventually as time passed the leaders would die and the sectors would elect representatives to the galactic senate.  As the Old Republic settled into its established borders, the title fell out of use.

Flash forward to the last year of the Clone War with the conflict appearing to have no end in sight.  Chancelor Palpatine started to appoint Moffs to work in parallel with their respective sector senators.  The Moff''s would oversee resources such as planets for the war effort, not just direct fleets and armies.  In areas where territory was conquered a moff was used rather than the previous senator that had proven traitorous to the Republic.  This was captured in the online Starwars.com Holonet news which gave a week by week account of the Clone Wars leading up to the release of Revenge of the Sith.

The first time the rank for a Moff is seen is in Revenge of the Sith on Governor Tarkin.  In the Tarkin novel, there are 20 moffs established at the dawn of the Empire.  Tarkin convinces the Emperor to create a special oversector leader for a combination of other sectors.  This was done making him Grand Moff Tarkin.

Grand Moff Tarkin is the leader of the Outer Rim Territories made up mostly of conquered territory from the Clone Wars and Hutt territory acquired during the war.  Here far from prying eyes of the Core Worlds, work is undertaken on the imperial war machine including the Death Star.

The rank of moff becomes the defacto sector leader after Palpatine abolishes the senate.  And the number of moffs by then equal or exceed the number of senators previously in the legislative body.

Replacing the bureaucracy are other ranks in the imperial structure.  The rank depends on the importance of the world.   In many cases, a world has a simple governor.  Sometimes the moff picks a favorite world to rule from and adopts the title of "governor" to go with Moff.   Other times military officers are used to govern worlds.

Captain Sturn is the governor of the occupied world of Kashyyyk.  Styling himself as a big game hunter, Sturn wore a sash made of wookiee fur.

Baron Tarko had the rank of Moff, but also the title of nobility where he governed on the world of Cato Nemodia, homeworld of the former Trade Federation.  He adopted the local fashion aesthetic into his uniform dress.

Governor Pryce had no record of military service before becoming appointed the leader of the world Lothal.  Her uniform was strictly that of imperial officer.

Captain Supervisor Grammel was the officer in charge of an imperial mining operation of Circarpous V.  Portly and more of a sadist in charge of the miners.

    His rule was not long.

Lon Isoto of Brental IV, who had the decency to at least wear his rank...

    and not much else.

Even Queen Amidala's Captain Panaka became the moff for the Naboo sector serving his old friend the former Senator Palpatine.

How many moff's are there?  As many as there are senators.

The Star Destroyers.  I love the look and sound of a Star Destroyer coming out of hyperspace.

Close second the whine of TIE fighers.  Imperial hardware, uniforms, everything is just more "cool" than the Rebel equivalents.

Chalk holders look perfectly fine for level 1, especially if they've had the clips replaced.

The clips are both more available, and easier to make yourself than the full dosimeter replica plus it's the part that people actually see (unless they are tall and looking down on you - not to pick on James lol).

Chalk holders are also dirt cheap compared to replica dosimeters (especially shipped from Philo in Italy).  The fact if they want to upgrade later they will have "wasted" the money on the chalk holders doesn't hold water.  They didn't waste the money, it got them level 1 approval.  Just because I've upgraded all the pieces of my costume over time, doesn't mean I wasted cash on my initial code cylinders, rank bar, belt, boots, and hat.  I trooped happily with all of those things for years and upgraded them when I had the cash.

    [/END OF MODERATOR NOTE]

This the official guide to illustrate all canon officer ranks recognized by the IOC. It is compiled with reference from the original movies, and official EU sources. It is created from a costuming point of view, and not meant to explain every rank's importance or how they differ from movie to movie (that's what fan fiction is for). It is just a simple chart that shows what rank officially goes on what costume. Code cylinders are intentionally excluded, and can be referenced in the CRLs.

Note Rogue one/Solo ranks are only compatible with Rogue one uniform style

Sorry Kris but what we do is cosplay.  We exist in the costuming community just like any other group or costumer does, there's nothing special about us that makes the word cosplay not apply.  When Legion members get upset about this word being used I never understand it.  Our costumes are better than the average con-goer but that doesn't make the word not apply.  If anything our units that emphasize in character behavior are actually cosplaying more than the rest of us.

To be honest this attitude that we are somehow special is why we have the bad rep in the rest of the costuming world that we do (along with unwelcoming behavior earlier in our history and in some places even today).  It turns away recruits and breeds antagonistic rival groups.  But you're right, that's a debate for another time (and one that's been going on ever since the term cosplay came about).

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

As far as the ranks go, this is excellent.  More ranks and better understanding of what the actual term is for each rank is nice.  I can now get rid of some of the various charts I've saved once the updates are made.  Maybe one day the dream of having a complete and comprehensive chart of the whole rank structure confirmed can actually be a reality.
