Star Wars Galaxies (or SWG) was a Massive Multiplayer Online Role-playing Game produced by Lucas Arts and Sony Online Entertainment. It existed from June 2003 until December 2011 when the game was "sunsetted" or shut down. It still exists in it's early form (before SOE practically destroyed the game with the New Game Experience - but that's a whole other story) by way of the Star Wars Galaxies Emulator or SWGMeu. It also gave us a glimpse into the Star Wars universe that wasn't all hero story arcs, flash points, and front line combat like we see in the movies. Of course the game included faction warfare between the Empire and Rebel Alliance, and faction rewards for faction missions and faction player versus player combat. Each side had strong holds and player run cities, which included garrisons and garrison personnel. This is where the Imperial Army Trooper comes in.

Upon joining the Imperial side you are given the rank of Private and granted access to Storm Trooper armor pieces which are purchased using faction points. By the time a player has enough points to reach Sergeant a new set of rewards is unlocked: the Imperial uniform. Note: the separate pants and jacket (not the one piece flight suit from the SW:RPG) and soft hat, all in grey. This is similar to the way the Imperial Navy Trooper is represented in the CRL: as two different entries - one with a flight suit and one with a more formal officer's uniform.

This is the same uniform worn by the Imperial recruiter you talk to when you first join the Imperial side, and the same as the low cost reinforcements you can call in (at the expense of faction points) to help during combat. These include various ranks of damage dealers and medics, all in the grey Imperial Army uniform. Furthermore, it's clear these are garrison troops and cost the least amount of points to purchase.

This alone might validate the general look and feel for an Imperial Army Trooper CRL, as precedent has been set with the Swamp Trooper who also appears in this game and this game alone and has a CRL in the Spec Ops detachment. Below are two pictures of an Imperial Investigator and Imperial Warrant Officer.

(I didn't have time to play the SWGEmu yet, so all images courtesy of the SWG Wiki)

To be continued as I play more of the SWGEmu and grind up Imperial faction points...

I might be wrong, but weren't there Imperial Army Troopers in one of the Star Wars online games? If so, maybe we could use them as a color reference.

I've uploaded a number of pictures of Imperial Army Troopers from Grenadier Miniatures for use with the Star Wars Miniatures Battles by West End Games. These are badly painted 20 year old miniatures I've had sitting around for a while, but you can still make out the details. The pictures below are thumbnails. The entire hi-resolution album can be found here.

    Imperial Army Trooper with DLT-19
Note: You can see there is no webbing or harness of any kind along the shoulders or back.

    Imperial Army Trooper with DH-17
Note: This is the only figurine to have a holster.

Imperial Army Trooper with DLT-20a or E-11 Sniper Rifle
Note: This trooper has three ammo pouches along the back of his belt. The rest only have two.

    Imperial Army Trooper with E-11
Note: This trooper seems to have a different pouch on his left side with a V shaped cover and snap.

    Imperial Army Officer with E-11
Note: This figurine is the only one with body armor similar to the AT-AT Commander / Snow Trooper. He is wearing the tunic and jodhpurs of an officer. There are very few discernible greeblies on the armor although the figurine itself is very highly detailed. I believe the armor is intentionally plain.

    Imperial Army Trooper
Note: A shot with better detail of the standard issue helmet. Notice the helmet has the six screw caps found on the AT-AT commander and not found on the AT-ST driver.

From Star Wars Rogue One: The Ultimate Visual Guide (page 104) we find this picture. It's obviously missing the half-moon antenna found on the AT-ST driver, and seems to have a small cylindrical antenna in it's place. This matches the details found on the Imperial Army Troopers pictured above from nearly 20 years ago. One possible explanation, for the sake of continuity, would be this: Rogue One and the original Star Wars RPG take place just before and just after the Battle of Yavin (ABY 0) while the Battle of Endor, where we get our first look at the AT-ST driver, takes place years later in 4 ABY. Sometime between 1 ABY and 4 ABY the Imperial Army upgrades it's telemetry receiver unit from a nub antenna to a better half-moon antenna, maybe after the Battle of Hoth. This is why we don't see any half-moon antenna detail on any of the Grenadier Miniatures which are modeled on troops fighting around 1 - 2 ABY.

    Obviously just a theory.

Last post for tonight. I ordered a Wampa Wear grey flight suit used by the AT-ST drivers which (according to the data I posted above) should be exactly the same as the one used by the Imperial Army Trooper. I already have the standard Imperial belt, black gauntlets, and jackboots from my TIE Pilot / Imperial Navy Trooper build and which match what the SW:RPG describes as those used in the Imperial Army Trooper. I also ordered three sets of helmets and armor to model the regular trooper, assault trooper, field officer, and combat medic. Those should be in by next weekend. I strongly believe the ammo pouches used by the army trooper are either Mauser or Moisin-Nagant ammo pouches from WWII, although in one illustration they are clearly MP40 magazine pouches like those used on the sand trooper. I'll mix and match them to see what looks best. Hopefully by this time next week I'll be able to take some photos of a mostly complete and accurate kit.

Sample CRL - Imperial Army Trooper

    For 501st approval:
Open face helmet consisting of a dome (with rim) and helmet skirt. Helmet is based on the shell of the Snow trooper, Snow Cmdr., and the AT-ST Driver. The helmet is painted a Gray color. A "Rangefinder" is attached to the helmet dome. This is centered to the right side of the dome and aligned to the rim. The rangefinder consists of : Rectangular box about h/l/d 1.85" (47mm), 1.65" (42mm), 0.4" (10.16mm) with a slight bevel and details on. The box is the same color as the helmet. 1 screw cap or cylindrical knob approx. 0.4" (10.16mm) in diameter in the upper left corner. 2 cylindrical pins lined up in the lower left corner of the box. 1 cylindrical pin in the upper right corner of the box. 1 Rangefinder main detail (originally created from a Revell V8 carburetor), aligned at the lower right corner of the box. Antenna Ring shaped antenna on top of the box with about 1.5" (38.1mm) in diameter and 0.35" (9mm) depth being cut at the top. Alternatively, a small cylindrical "nub" antenna, silver in color, can be used instead. Imperial Code Disks are positioned on both sides of the helmet skirt. There are 6 screw cover greeblies positioned equally around the bottom of the helmet skirt (3 on each side). A black trim is covering the edge of the helmet skirt and forehead of the dome. Sorry to hear about your problem with the flight suit, maybe you can find a buyer for it on the Forums or on Ebay. Wampa Wear or Pilot Bay are 2 other Vendors that have a good reputation for their wares. Right now Wampa Wear only has XXXL black flight suits in stock, but they have plenty of gray if you want to go for a Scanning Crew build.

I've been doing research on this topic for a while now, and will have a costume done for at least two different variants by the end of February. Here's the research I'm basing my costume builds on...

    - The base uniform is the very same grey Imperial flight suit that AT-ST drivers wear. According to the Imperial Sourcebook (pages 45 - 46) the AT-ST driver is referred to an "Army Assault Crewman" who drives many different types of surface attack vehicles including the AT-ST and AT-AT. It says in the ISBv2 they are regular Army Troopers with driver training (like an MOS). The Imperial Sourcebook has different stats for two variants of Imperial Army Trooper: Army Trooper & Army Assault Crew

    - According to WEG Star Wars Miniatures Battles (page 98) the Imperial Army Trooper can be found with no armor or any armor.

    - According to WEG Star Wars Miniatures Battles Companion (page 56), the Imperial Army Trooper uniform is described as "The basic uniform of the Imperial Army is a grey coverall reminiscent of a flight suit. The boots and belt are black, and black gauntlets are worn. Army troopers wear a grey helmet which provides protection to the head and neck by means of an extended brim along the back and sides. The helmet is also provided with protective and vision-enhancing goggles, which can be worn over the eyes or placed up on the brim when unrestricted view is desired."  It further states there are no individual unit marking on the uniform and elaborates, "Only one emblem is displayed on the uniform - the emblem of the Empire itself. This overarching symbol is ubiquitous in every branch of the service. In the army, the Imperial emblem is worn on both shoulders of the uniform."

    - According to WEG Star Wars Miniatures Battles Companion (page 56 - 57) there are some exceptions in regards to unit markings. For example, "On planets where it would be easier to subvert the armed forces than to conquer them, for instance, forces which are raised or appropriated there may sometimes be allowed to retain a unit identity and display specific ornamentation." The book goes on to explain, "Some special missions forces that are particularly successful are allowed to have their own emblems."

    - According to WEG Dark Force Rising Sourcebook (page 48) "Army troopers make up the vast majority of the Empire's ground soldiers, especially in light of the dwindling number of stormtroopers. Army troopers wear grey uniforms, protective helmets and partial body armor." The book describes Imperial Army Assault Troopers specifically, "In addition, the army deploys many specialized units and soldiers. Assault Troopers, for example, are trained to work in tandem with assault vehicles such as walkers and hover craft. Like the vehicles they fight with, they are heavily armed and armored, carrying maximum fire power into battle with them." Stats are provided for regular Imperial Army Troopers and Imperial Army Assault Troopers.

    - According to Star Wars: The Essential Guide to Warfare (page 125) "Army troopers piloted most of the Empire's ground assault vehicles, and sometimes served aboard warships as marines. In battle they wore partial body armor and helmets over gray jumpsuits."

    - Based on the design of Imperial Army Troopers by Grenadier Models for the WEG Star Wars Miniatures Battles game...
The helmet worn by the Imperial Army Trooper is the same as the AT-AT commander style with the six screw caps around the lower edges of the helmet   Its hard to say if there is a range finder antenna, but there's definitely the range finder block greeblie on all helmets. No armor is worn by regular troopers, only the officers have body armor. The regular troopers appear to be wearing a flight suit, jack boots, gauntlets, and belt with Imperial style buckle. The officers appear to be wearing a tunic and jodhpurs pants. They have body armor similar to the AT-AT commander and Snow Trooper. Regular troopers have blaster rifles, blaster carbines, or blaster pistols. Only the units with blaster pistols have "Han Solo" style holsters. The others have no holsters at all. The Imperial Army Officers are only seen with E-11 carbines. They do not have grenades, holsters, or ammo pouches. The Imperial Army Trooper with the DLT-19 has two ammo pouches in front and two in the back on his belt. The Imperial Army Trooper with the E-11 long rifle variant (or possibly DLT-20a) has two ammo pouches in front and three in the back on his belt, and two grenades. The Imperial Army Trooper with the E-11 carbine has two ammo pouches in front and two in the back on his belt. The Imperial Army Trooper with the DH-17 pistol has two ammo pouches in front and two in the back on his belt, and one grenade. There are no Imperial Navy Trooper style drop boxes on any of their belts. There are other pouches, probably Vietnam era in style. There are no harnesses worn by any trooper variant - all have the standard Imperial style belt.
Hope some of this helps. I have a mountain of material available to me although I haven't gone through it all. I did an internship at West End Games while in college in the 1990's and have a copy of almost every book they published and hundreds of their miniatures. I also have access to tons of molds and pieces to put together most variants. I'll be at Industrial Light and Magic and LucasFilm in mid-March and see if I can get any info about these troopers in future productions, but they're pretty tight lipped about this stuff.
