What part were you in?  I have some of the costume subgroup shots.  If you're in one I can send it to you if it'll help.

I'm in the main photo of all of us,  the one with just navy troopers, and I think one more.  We also had a goofy one.  I was the only one in navy trooper dress (tunic) uniform.

  2. It's been a very long time since I've been on these forums, so I'd thought I'd let everyone know what's happening in my personal life.  July 2019 I broke my back (T11 vertibrae) and have been on a very comprehensive rehab since Sept 2019.  Last year when the pandemic hit I could no longer go to the VA hospital rehab center or to the local rec center for pool therapy or treadmill.  So, I've had to learn to walk again on my own.  Sometime last March I started virtual walks with some online companies that provide medals and bibs.  I use them for inspiration and motivation.  Today I did 4200 steps in 1.2 miles in 35 minutes inside a mall, that's a record for me.  I've not been able to ski,  snowshoe, climb mountains, hike, backpack, or any other outdoor activities, but I'm working my way up to getting back to that stuff in about a year.  I've also been able to get back to sewing a couple months ago without crying in pain, and I've got a nice new CR10S pro v2 3D printer I've been using to make costume stuff.  I'm hoping to finish off my green officer hat soon since I've practically finished my AT-AT commander as well (I know, that's another detachment, but two costumes in one isn't bad either).  And the Firebird Quilt banner should be quilted and finished before my big trip to Glacier NP 4th July week (I've been working on that forever! it's finally time to finish it already!  LOL).  And I'm back to droid building!  For those that know me, that's a big step in my greatest passion, it's been almost 3 years since I've worked on any droids.

Another thing that has happened is my brother moved in with me back in Sept, which he's been a tremendous help to me.  I'm slowly cleaning out my house in anticipation of possibly moving at the end of this year (if my job allows it by then).  He also brought two amazing older cats into my house, and I think they're finally getting used to me.

I used to be very active on these boards, but with my job, my back rehab, my brother moving in, and very slowly getting back to as normal a life at home as possible, it's been hard keeping up with all the groups I belong to.  I just wanted to let everyone know I'm still alive, still sore everyday, still a bit wobbly on the right leg, but I'm making progress.  I hope to check this forum more often now that I'm back into doing some Star Wars-y stuff...  love you all, my favorite detachment.  (so, what's going on in the IOC?  LOL)

  3. Sorry I haven't been on the boards for a long time.  I've been dealing with a broken back since mid-July and still in rehab.  Getting better everyday, though I have those days when I'm in pain (like today, cold weather super sucks).  I'll definitely be at SWCA, mostly in the droid room.  After a week of fighting Disney I finally got my After Dark ticket (the one I ordered at 4:15am when they went on sale, long before they sold out, long story but a firm talking to with two higher supervisors to get my one ticket ordered properly, it's on it's way in the mail).   I'm hoping there will be an IOC photo shoot so I can wear my Navy trooper, I'll have the Firebird banner with me.  I'm actually really super excited about this one (strongly hated the Chicago one).  I'll be visiting Ventura and Channel Islands before the con, and visiting 7 national parks in Utah on the way home, ending at Iron Mountain hot springs in Glenwood Springs on Labor Day before the last three hours home.  I'm praying my back will be ready for hiking, walking, standing, and having fun (I'm tired of tylenol, lol).  See you all there.

Also:  for those that don't know already, I'm making a special gonk droid for mental and learning disability awareness.  GONK-MALD will be a table top gonk in blues and greens, the ribbon colors for mental and learning disabilities.  If you would like to add/contribute something to it email me at lynellephi@yahoo.com or pm me here.

  4. I missed all the IOC stuff this time around, so maybe I'll actually be in the photo shoot in Anaheim.  Yeah, as one of the active droid builders who do panels I think I kinda need to be there.  Unfortunately, I took a big loss on Chicago with the motorhome falling apart and a water heater in my house breaking a pipe, resulting in a slightly flooded basement and a $1000 credit card bill three days before I left.  If I can sell the motorhome and my utility trailer (and a bunch of other stuff), get a room with tons of people in it to make the hotel cost reasonable, find someone to drive my droids out, and convince my boss for another long vacation (I have 15 days combined PTO total including sick days), I might be able to come.  PTO and cost is what will keep me at home.  And I really don't think my feet can tolerate another 5 days plus a day of droid setup (6 very long days for me).  I grew up in Disneyland, so if they still have the after 4:00pm half price tickets, I might be able to do that just for Galaxy's Edge.  I just can't do this every year,  Disney should have waited a couple more years before springing this on us.  I can't finish a droid in less than a year....  I'm kinda angry at the whole situation, I see Disney killing Celebration in a few years.... just like Star Trek conventions are the way of the dodo, too....

  5. So, IOC photo shoot is at the same time as the 501st photo shoot?  that doesn't make sense.  Guess I'm out altogether.  Leaving all costumes behind now...

Edit:  me stupid!  the link was for the 501st photo shoot.  So, is ours still on Friday?  I'm soooooo confused....

  6. can't on Sunday.  I'm volunteering with the droid builders in the morning, then off to a Cubs game at Wrigley field.  Friday noonish is the only time I have left open from all the other volunteering I'm doing.  My schedule is full already....

I'm also leaving in two days with a motorhome full of droids.  Please have someone text me at 720-480-0038 to let me know what you all decide.  I'll be packing up my laptop early Sat morning and won't have internet access...  I got my navy trooper all packed and the Firebirds quilt banner almost ready...

  7. It's been way too long since I've been on these boards, got a new job and taking care of my health right now.  But I will be at SWCC all five days, droids, costumes, and Firebird quilted banner in tow.  I'm staying in my motorhome at the McCormick Place, have tickets for dinner and bash, and will be at trade event Thursday night.  I'm hoping we can all meet up for a photo shoot, however I'll be in the droid areas most of the time.  I'll be on the Backyard Budget Droid Building panel, so come say hi!

  8. Think Geek is where we all got our Vader umbrellas.  Unfortunately, they've been sold out for quite sometime.  Try ebay.  Being from Denver, half our troops are in "inclement weather".  We're used to it.  Sometimes we'll put snow cleats on our boots.  Unless I-25 or I-70 is shut down where we can't get to a troop, we troop!  LOL  And yeah, sometimes our garrison CS will make the decision to cancel a troop if the weather is super bad (usually when we see every school being closed scrolling at the bottom of our TVs).  Our garrison policy is to troop if you can, and if you don't feel comfortable then let us know your backing out.  It's a hobby after all, you choose the troops you want to do (unless they've been cancelled), whatever the weather.

  9. So, I haven't been on these boards in quite some time and looks like I missed out on a lot, but I'll try to keep up with you all again.  Just to let everyone know I hit a bump in the road of life.  My dearest closest friend/companion of 23 years passed away last Sunday evening.  I've been dealing with all the wolves circling his apartment for his stuff. I've been named the executor of his estate, but he left in heavy debt, so gotta sell all of his stuff to pay off his bills.  Please be patient with me a little longer as I get his estate taken care of.  I'm cancelling all my troops and board activity for a month. I'll be back to my old crazy self again soon enough, though.

I had dental surgery this past Friday.  Root canal, root extraction, and deep cleaning/scaling.  Eleven novacane shots and five hours later I went home with a very sore mouth (still hard to chew).  And I have two more appointments for a bridge (I lost a tooth on the road last month).  I've also been desperately getting R2-AL and his new buddy, R3-BT (the other bartender droid on Jabba's barge, the white one with the red vertical stripe) ready for SWCO.  Last night I got AL to the Rockies game but couldn't get his left leg to move (yeah, I think he was drinking or something because he kept going in circles).  LOL

Last month I had a long trip in the motorhome to Droid Con in Indianapolis then had a real vacation near a beach in Muskegon, MI.  I LOVE Michigan!  Did lots of hiking over sand dunes (Sleeping Bear Dunes is magnificent!), ate lots of ice cream, visited cool little towns like Holland and Empire (yes, I reached the Empire! LOL), did the 3-Dune challenge in Indiana Dunes, and saw the dancing lighted waterfalls in Grand Haven, home of the Coast Guard.  Unfortunately, my transmission broke (or a link to it) in Indiana Dunes.  Nothing like two extra days in a Days Inn with a 7-eleven across the street for food somewhere in Portage, IN.  And the cab air conditioner wasn't working on the way back (hot as hell coming home end of June).  I could go on about all my adventures, but all I can really remember is that darn side trip to fix the darn transmission!

Anyway, I haven't trooped much, haven't really worked on Fawxy the Firebird quilt since Feb, and my droids really need some TLC.  Lots of projects to get finished before SWCO.  I'll get it all done, but need some time to get my personal life together again (I didn't realize how much dependent I was on JDon until now).  Hope you all understand, but I'll be back to trooping sometime in Sept.  See you all in Orlando!

  10. Problem is we are not a military group but a cosplay costuming group.  There are tons of 501st/RL/R2/Mando Mercs who have never been in the military.  And the public that we cater to probably does not understand the details of military habits (like saluting).  This issue is not really a divide between military and non-military members but rather a Disney/LFL issue.  The above reference photo shows a Nazi-type salute.  If everyone in the 501st starts doing that type of salute Disney will shut us down in less than a heart beat!!  DO NOT DO IT!!!  Or any other type of military salute, just to be on the safe side.

I believe last year we came to a compromise to snap to attention.  That is all that is needed.  You never see any saluting what so ever on the Death Star, so why should we??  Let's make Disney/LFL happy by making all of our appearances rated G.  Saluting in the public is bad enough, but saluting at a military event might get you kicked out.  If you are at a military event, taking off your cap/helmet is good enough to show respect.  After all, we are part of the public, not the military.  And yes, Disney/LFL is watching us....

  11. Easy, you have to use a lining (I used regular ol' jacket lining) so there is no hem seam showing.  There are many tutorials on the internet (Youtube is your friend) to teach how to make a jacket lining.  Basically, it's the same as the jacket in reverse, sew on the lining to the jacket leaving one arm open so you can flip it right side out.  For the sleeves cut about an inch off the lining sleeve cuff (the end towards your hand) and fold over the jacket cuff to the lining cuff.  Carefully hand hem that in place being careful not to run the thread through the outside.  Again, many tutorials on the internet on how to do this.  If you figure out jacket linings you'll never have to hem again except the sleeve cuffs.

  12. SEE, this proves my point that Veers and other armored officers should be in the IOC, not the Armored Cav!  :D   Yeah, Veers has sage green snowie armor while Tarkin has the new style.  I'm still working on my Veers (backplate and hemming to go, along with putting zippers in my English riding boots because my darn stupid feet are deformed and just do not wiggle into any type of boots without zippers).

  13. I'm just reading all of this.  Under no circumstances should we salute since we are costumed characters, not an actual military unit.  Disney will frown upon it.  Even saluting to kids is not kosher, not all kids know what it means.  And as an ex-army soldier I spent my time saluting for real.  I don't need to salute to the public with a costume on.  I personally take it as a sign of disrespect to our actual military who do have to salute every day.  Please do not salute in costume in public.  No matter how much you think we are portraying a "military" unit, we are not.  Again, I'm going to say that Disney would not even allow it at this point.  I never will salute in costume.  And absolutely big fat NO to any "Hitler" style salutes.  If I see anyone doing that even as a joke you'll be meeting "Sgt Phillips", and you don't want to meet that gal ever.  Disney will shut us down in a big fat hurry if anyone does anything even close to that.  Be careful out there, and just don't salute (a nod of the head is all that is needed).

  14. I'll be taking measurements tomorrow, but these look promising to me.  This is for my green officer/Veers costume, which has tall english riding boots, not jackboots. Let me know what you think.  I'm thinking of offering $90 (I don't want to offer to low, should I offer $100?).  It's my size.

  15. I would like to anounce the birth of a six pound fibroid (we're having a naming contest on fb).  Surgery took longer than expected (4 hours).  I was sent home Saturday after having some side effects and nausea on Friday (they kept me in the hospital an extra day).  I've been on the toilet since yesterday.  Who knew pooping could be so painful?  And how much did I eat at the hospital?  I swear I've lost another 3 pounds in poop since yesterday afternoon!  I'm OK, but in pain, eating well, though.  Lots of visitors bringing me lots of chocolate (and food).  In the meantime after doing some research, I'm about to order six yards of army green gaberdine for my AT-AT commander.  I think it's too green but it's the closest I can find.  Someone needs to dye a bunch of white gaberdine the correct grayish green for us  (I don't know how to dye anything).  Helmet should be ready in a couple weeks, Will be ordering the armor soon.  Now, to find the right english riding boots to fit my odd left foot.

  16. I am posting this to all the boards/social media I belong to.

Most of you know that I have had some health problems (asthma, stomach, etc) the last four years.  Back in May I was sent to the ER along with six others from work for extreme vomiting and dehydration.  A cat scan revealed two golf ball-sized fibroids in my uterus and a very tiny cyst near my intestines (non-cancerous).  A few days later a trip to the doctor revealed some other problems like an over enlarged uterus (at first the ER doctor thought I was five months pregnant) that had moved to the side, creating all kinds of health problems.   At that time it was decided to do a major complete hysterectomy.

That time has almost come.  I am scheduled for surgery on Tuesday Aug 26th (next Tue) at Skyridge Hospital on I-25 and Ridgeway Pkwy (down south past Park Meadows).    I’ll be there for 3-5 days then at home on disability leave for another five weeks.  I won’t be able to lift/bend/etc  for at least 2-3 months after the surgery.

What does this all mean to you, my dear friends?  I won’t be trooping, displaying droids, partying, etc until after Thanksgiving.  I’m hoping that I’ll be better enough to enjoy a great Thanksgiving meal with some of you.  If I’m up to it I might be able to join some of my garrison buddies at the Oct meet-n-greet, and I’ll probably give my 007 panel at Mile Hi Con at the end of Oct.  Other than that, I’ll be taking a haitus from all activities until after Thanksgiving.

Thank you all for being great friends and understanding.  Anyone is welcome to come by the hospital and give me hell (or cookies).  LOL

  17. I've done two kids activity books for the droid builders. If you need help with the final product I have PrintShop pro. The R2 BC found a use for one coloring page, using it for "find this part on a real droid". It has proven to be very popular. We'll need a full front view of an officer and maybe a navy trooper (coloring pages can be used for this). I found many coloring pages, a word search program, a maze program (it can even do round mazes like a Death Star), and several other word game programs on the internet. If you want I can start making the maze and word search pages. I don't know if we'll find coloring pages online, except maybe a Death Star or other ships, but I'm willing to take a look for something we can use.

TIP: if you want to use this for CVII, LFL has a family room with kids activities. We as a detachment can probably get an hour with the kids. However, in order to use this book at CVII we will need approval from LFL. They'll ask us to insert a legal phrase, the official CVII logo, and probably the LFL logo. This is true whether we are in the family room, or just passing these out in the 501st room. The good thing was they printed enough for the family room, keeping the R2 BC costs down. Someone who has LFL contacts (Mary Franklin in particular) can make those negotiations for us. LFL loved the R2 activity book, and I'll be more than willing to help make an IOC one as well. Just let me know how you want me to proceed.
