  1. Of course facial hair is acceptable! The only exception I can think of is where you are portraying a named character, like Tarkin, where you would need to match the characters facial hair style.

Facial hair was generally not allowed in the military as it prevents gas masks from sealing against the skin. However most military forces now allow their personnel to wear beards unless there is a likely situation of them having to don respirators. An interesting exception were the British Army Pioneer Corps who have always allowed their Sgts to wear beards.

So grow that beard and be proud of it!

  2. That's a question that has no exact answer.
As an Imperial Officer you should act in character wherever the situation presents itself. And that is the key. It entirely depends on the situation.

I've known Imperial Officers to quietly ask, "you're going to be arrested, sir. Would you like it done nicely or nastily?". Of course most choose the nastily option, at which point the officer bawls his instructions and orders TK's around. Now this might be fun, and the subject might also enjoy it, but what about the 90 year old grandmother casually walking past minding her own business? So always think about the entire situation.

As open faced costumes we are the voice of the squad we are with, so think about that as well.

Generally, start with some courteous, add a little pompous, a hint of supremacy and lot of being really scared of Lord Vader. You'll then have the perfect mix.

But always, always give a smile at the end.

  3. Just as a reminder for us oldies and as information for you young-uns, the old compad would still be clearable for a period of six months after the CRL is published, so there's no need to panic.

It's worth noting the exact date of the change somewhere (like here) for clarity. Plus a copy of the old CRL in PDF format for any GML that wishes to see old CRL during this time.

Another point to note for costumers is that if you wish to upgrade any item on your costume, you must also seek approval with your local GML.

  4. If you have a comm pad that passes for the newer TIE Reserve requirements, however, it should definitely also be permitted under the Bridge Crew CRL.  The TIE changes were pretty minor, and the CRL text does not have a level of detail that would prevent that.

I would disagree. The TIE compad looks very different to the crewmen compad now, including colours.

It would make sense to have the same compad between TI and IC, but understand the reluctance to simply blindly flow.

Was it decided that the three lines are acceptable on the gauntlet?

I've looked and really can't find any evidence of the three lines being on IC gloves.  The closest we get to the three lines is in ROTJ when Moff Jerjerrod greets the Emperor with his crewman *cough* sorry TIE Reserves on the parade.  Here you can clearly see the TIE Pilot/X-Wing Pilot three line version of the gauntlet.

The remaining reference for IC is either with no gloves, or the shot is not good enough to see whether lines were there or not.

It would make sense to allow the three lines pilot version, but we can't really make changes without some form of evidence.

  6. Hi Lorenzo,

I am so sorry that it has taken me so long you respond, but real life has certainly taken it's toll on most our Legion members recently. Also whenever I receive a submission, I like to spend some time and give a proper inspection.

As you currently stand, there are a few things that will need to be changed before I can award you a certificate.

    Boots

The boots are similar to German Knobelbechers but unfortunately they are not similar enough.

They are not similar enough for the following reasons

    • Sole - the sole is too think and you can see the tread marks
    • Material - it could be the lighting, but they have a look of faux leather or plastic
    • Fit - they appear to have a loose fit
    • Loops - they have loops on either side, which shouldn't be there

    Hat

Looks a little too tall, but this could be because of camera angle and camera distortion.

I am finding it difficult to see the stitching and pattern of the hat.

Could you post some more photos please?

    Flight-suit

The compad pocket is sitting a little bit high and ideally should be halfway between the wrist and elbow, whereas this pocket seems closer to the elbow. That said, your flight-suit will be good for Level 2. For Level 3 the pocket should be moved towards your wrist.

I must say that you certainly have the "look" of an Imperial Crewman, and I do encourage you to strive for that extra level. You'll look like you have just stepped off an Imperial Star Destroyer, when you achieve this.

If you wish to talk some more about your submission, then do feel free to contact me. I am always happy to help.

  7. Hi Caroline,

I have now given your costume a thorough review, and here are my comments

Flight-suit - This is an okay fit, but there is excessive material around the bottom of the legs, the back of the knees and the lower back. Could this be tailored a little? The screen used flight suits weren't highly tailored, but they were a little bit less baggy in those areas.  I would also suggest considering adding stirrups to the legs of your flight suit to help keep everything tucked into you boots. There is some ambiguity in the CRL concerning whether the mandarin collar should be flat or have a chevron for L2 CRL, so at this stage I accept that your collar is correct.

Cogs - I can't really tell looking at the photos, but the cogs look like they are material and are attached with hook-and-loop? The L2 requirement for cogs is for them to be printed Vinyl.

Belt - Could I please see a larger more detailed photo so that I can check to see whether the leather does or does not have grooves?

Boots - they do look the right type and fit, but the photos don't show enough detail. Could I please have a larger more detailed photo?

Cap, Code Cylinders, Belt boxes, belt buckle, greeblie - again, all look okay from what I can see, but I would need to see a little larger and more photographic detail

Hair - please wear "military style" e.g. pony tail, bun

You're not too far off and with a little bit of tweaking you should be there.

I hope that all makes sense, to you? If not, then do please contact me.

  8. You'll be good. The only thing to watch is 501st membership. If you're deployed, especially overseas, you might not be able to get your 1 troop a year to keep your membership from lapsing. Fortunately there is a rule for this and your CO can override the lapse. But you do need to be active with your Garrison, so keep in touch.

  9. Hi Eric,

I have finally given your costume a thorough review. I apologise for the length of time it has taken me, and I do thank you for your patience.

Your costume is indeed of a high level.

Your flight-suit cogs are vinyl and proportionate and placed correctly.

The flight-suit pockets are all in the correct places. There is a little bunching at the top of the boots which could be made to look better by either adding stirrups, or tucking in your trousers a little more.

Your boots are not the genuine knobelbechers, but they do certainly look "jack boot" style, and added top adjustment strap is adequately replicated.

Your helmet does look to be in the right dimensions and proportions, but like has been mentioned earlier, the helmet is pressed too close to your forehead.

This is an easy fix by adjusting the padding in the helmet.  Whilst doing this, also try and get the flare to be a little more horizontal, like in the reference screen capture.

Your gloves, belt, bucket and greeblie are all accurate.

Your chosen ANH option of beltboxes, compad and two code cylinders also look to be of the high standard required.

To summarise, please adjust the padding in your helmet, and tuck in your trousers a little more. If you could take some more photos I will review them and let you know quicker than this response took.

    Many thanks for your efforts.

  10. I love this idea! I really want to see photos of Scanning Crew from around the world scanning stuff.

Also the merch possibilities like, "You've just been scanned by the 501st IOC Scanning Department".

Start a thread and encourage other scanning crew photos to be added. If it takes off then we can think about forming a costume based IOC group like the already mentioned Firebirds and Regional groups.

  11. You'll need to use some sort of filler, then sand it, then paint it.

You can get a metal filler. So I would suggest nipping down to your local car repair centre and see whether they can help you.

It might be worth seeing if they can actually grind off the words as well, whilst you are there.

Alternatively the local cobbler should be able to replace the buckle with something more suitable.

  12. Hi Martyn,

I've now reviewed your costume, and require a little tweak.

The CPS flight-suit requires a number of modifications, including re-positioning of the pockets.

The hip pockets need to be moved slightly inward and upward, then the thigh pockets need to be moved to be in-line and closer to them with a gap of < 1cm.

    Here is a picture.

    flightsuit.png

Also, the compad window will need to be opened up as it is too small.

If you are thinking about the next level, then you will need to have vinyl cogs and not embroidered ones. I thought I'd mention this now as you can make the changes to the flight-suit at the same time.

I do like your belt, boxes, curved buckle and buckle-greeblie.

Your hat is very good with high-end greeblie.

It's fantastic to see Knobelbechers, so very good find.

With a little unpicking, re-positioning and careful stitching you'll certainly be ship-shape.

Do feel free to contact me with any questions, as I've made these flight-suit changes personally.

    -Tristan
