  1. We are looking into all of these things, but recognize that the cornerstone of costuming for the legion and three different detachments was shared resources.

A belt and buckle was the same among several costumes.

A flightsuit was utilized by JRS, Gunners and the IOC and lead to other armor being added like the Navy trooper.

I have no intention of taking what should be the same things and making changes that will make these costume ineligible to cross over to other detachments when it should be the same thing.  This costume should be similar to the ones used by the JRS.  It should be similar to the ones used by the Gunners (non saga).  And there will have to be clear delineation as we move from production to production.

Yes, TIE pilots can help us fill in the gaps for other costumes.... but in the face of photos of the costume that is under question, we would like that to take precedence.... if possible.

This will likely lead to a confab of the LMOs and other detachment leaders. to sort out details and have ALL ships and stakeholders head in the same direction together.

  2. that is not an ANH Staff costume.  ANH Staff has the collar close on the side and the princess seams in the back do not come from the arms.

That is a security services officer uniform.  https://databank.501st.com/databank/Costuming:Temp-Imperial-Staff-Officer_(Non_Saga)

It should work for them, but do take care checking what they get.  What is advertised and what they actually get can be two separate things.

  3. I need to just get this out. I am not going to be able to attend Celebrations London in April. It is not going to be possible. My father has cancer. He has a pretty bad one (not that there are good ones). We have known since Thanksgiving and he completed a very aggressive regimen of chemo and radiation a couple of weeks ago. He had and still is having a rough time of it. I stayed with my parents during the last week of treatment to help out as I could. He is getting better now and every day some of his strength returns. But he has a very serious surgery still ahead around the time of the convention. I plan to be there with him when this happens.

Everything that was planned for Celebrations will still happen. I have very good people working on the staff of the IOC Detachment that have everything covered. They will see that everything happens without a hitch. Things I planned to bring to people will still get to them, either in the mail or hand carried by friends. The only real loss is not seeing people that I love dearly. I had hoped to go to Celebrations and for a week in addition in the rest of Europe, but that will have to wait.

I am only giving the reasons for this now as people have been asking and wondering. I want to thank everyone who has been thinking and praying for my family. Knowing that helps immensely.

  4. we will definitely take a look at it in the next term.  I just want to make sure we are not assigning a specific length to something that could be variable given the size of the wearer.  Most darts (in other parts of the uniform and business suits and general) are tailor tricks to get a suit to conform to the users irregular shape.  A set length of a dart for one person may not work for another person.

  5. Good to meet you Lewis.  The best fabric I have seen was a run made by members of the German Garrison a few years ago (they may have another run coming soon).  It was a mostly wool with some poly blend for body  The original OT costumes were a Feld Grau cavalry Twill made of wool, though gaberdine has been used on many costumes.

There are no established patterns that are openly available, but many were modified from a McCalls Civil war pattern if you can find it.

That fabric you have shown is a good color!!

  6. You  can read the entire history and development here chronologically starting with page one here.  The thread and initial posts was created by an LMO at the same time the visual guides were released with the Rise of Skywalker premier in December of 2019.

In March of 2020 a cadet (a person not a fully approved member of the legion) was announced to be working on a costume.  The cadet started showing their work and progress taking direction and advice from members, the staff and the LMO who started the thread.  By July the body of the costume was mostly finished.  Only a few items remained.

By October 2020, the costume was finsihed and the Cadet was ready to submit.  They were not aware of the process of getting permission from the LMO office prior to starting and no one had explained this to them.  The LMO clears a costume to proceed.... it gets made by the applicant.  A CRL is written and if it is written well and the costume is of sufficient quality it is published as a CRL.

The first visible pass of a CRL text is in February 2021 by the applicant.

A full CRL text is posted by the applicant in March 2021 when my administration came into office.  That is when the questions started about the back seam of the tunic.  Ironically, a German garrison member at this time pointed out the back seams on the Lego minifig of the character (which turned out to be right).   The final CRL text was shown at the end of March 2021.

In April I brought in one of the head LMOs to see what we could do to get things started.  He came in and stated that the LMO office now voted on if costumes could proceed.  This was a new development.  The second thing was he wished we had involved the LMO office from the start (the thread was created by the other head LMO and mostly commented on by him up to that point).  We were then involved that there was not enough views for the CRL to proceed and it was placed on hold.

And the entire thread went bananas including the previous detachment leader calling foul.

Was the LMO in the right to make this decision? Yes, they are the final arbiter.  Was it right.  I didn't think so.  A lot of people didn't think so.  And there was really no indication that this would be stopped until I came into office.

Another LMO who is active in the detachment made a statement of support and a suggestion for getting it cleared.  They took down their post and resigned their position.

Over the next month into May a number of members and staff that had been very pro creation for this costume, came out against it in the same thread.  The blame for this decision was placed on the entire LMO office that voted.  It should be noted that this team is different than this past year's LMO team.  Other detachment leaders that do not have IOC costumes created accounts and came in flummoxed at the decision.   There was arguments over the people that were for the CRL being paused as they were involved in the publishing of CRLs that didn't have the same references.  Old wounds got opened over that and that is why some bring up some CRLs periodically and ask if they can be removed for a lack of references.   Promises to check sources and find out conclusively what the detail of the lower back of the tunic were made, but nothing was revealed.

The following year in 2022 I reached out to our Legion Commanding Officer Justin Sonfield and told him the history of this CRL's development.  I said it was outrageous that this one detail would prevent it from being published.  I stated the cadet was prepared to make any change that would be revealed from finding out this detail.  I asked them if they would speak to LFL about it.  Justin did and explained the situation.  LFL was not able to provide a reference photo, but Justin was able to show them a line of of many tunic back seams.  It was something of a police line up, but LFL fingered the one they said was correct.  It turned out to be the same seams on the LEGO minifig.  The cadet made modifications to their tunic and we were able to submit.  The LMO office accepted it and it was published.  That happened under @mrrikki LMO administration and I have admired his commitment to get things created.  Both him and Justin Sonfield are committed to a pro costume growth platform.

(totally a side topic, but since I keep seeing it come up here)

I'm just a cadet trying to get an Imperial Bridge Crew approval right now.  As outside eyes coming in fresh, a strongly-gendered name for a job is a huge throwback to when I was a kid.  It rings in my ears to read "crewman" and "crewwoman".

I think it makes sense to un-gender the term to "Crew Member."  People of all genders (and none) can crew a starship all the same.  The costume is the same on everyone who wears it.

NASA dropped the term "manned spaceflight" for "crewed spaceflight" over 22 years ago.

It might be time for the 501st to do it as well.

i don’t disagree.  And that could be something we could do here and with other non saga crls going forward.
