So, I will say for me Krennic was something I fell in love with from the first Teaser Trailer.  I could give 3 ****s about being "first" or the model, I just wanted the costume.  When SWCE came and went and no one had started anything, I stepped up because I wanted the costume, and I wanted it to be official.

To be honest, that's the energy we need.  I've seen the Agent Kallus threads, and the Thrawn threads, and so on.  I've seen the people excited about the new changes in Rogue One to old costumes. (Hell, it made me want an olive green one finally, TBH.)

My follow up question is this:  If you want to create a team, how do you chose people for it?  What is their role?  And do they put a stop to the...  well, honestly, naysaying that occurs on every thread - the "well, we're not sure yet, you should really wait," or the "we're going to have to wait until Episode 8 to see if we get clearer pictures," and so on?  I felt it working on Krennic - and honestly, some of it was coming from staff.  I wanted to build the CRL - to me a CRL is a living, breathing organism.  It can and should change with new information - and they have as the years have gone by.  At one point FX and Rubies were approvable, now they're not - but we didn't kick out the people with FX and Rubies (though some might want us to) - so is some of the pushback coming from people who don't want "sub-par" costumes admitted before we get that one tiny little detail that will make it perfect?

I like your CRL Team idea - I have all the respect in the world for BJ, but as you said, sometimes this is more than one person can handle.  I just would like clarification on how you envision that team working, and how we prevent others, including staff, from trying to slow it down?

What I'm thinking of for a CRL Team would be an all inclusive team for each new CRL. Including anyone with a vested interest in that specific costume.  We will recognize each of the members that contributes the most constructively by a soon to be designed ribbon of banner under there posting avatar.  All the staff members can contribute as well, as long as it is relevant to the swift completion of the CRL.
I also propose a staff member Shepard and guide the team as well as award the banners to the deserving team members.    Cassandra (Centauri) of the Belgium Garrison NT, has accepted this position.  She would be a member of the IPM, Imperial Propaganda Machine and could aid in CRL construction, along with aid from other staff and team members.

    Question for all three candidates
how are you going to help brand new members who join .I have seen people join ask a question and get multiple answers some times from other members who haven't cleared themselves and it's not always good advice Do you think it's time to pair a new member with a experienced officer maybe a cadet program

A Cadet/Mentoring program is a great idea, one we have touched on briefly.   In fact, you have inspired me to start a similar program in the IOC as the Attache' program the FISD uses to encourage participation in the forums and to aid in costume approval and improvements.  It helps new members as well as keeping approved members active on the forums.  It is relatively easy to maintain and it's done by members that volunteer to assist.  Perhaps, you can be the first member when we get it running.

With the Q & A portion of the elections winding down, I would like to take a moment to make a few comments and observations, and then pose one last question to BOTH candidates.
I say "both" because lets be honest; The "third party" candidate we have - like many recent American elections - is effectively only there as a protest vote. He hasn't deemed it worthy of his time to grace us with so much as an introduction.
This is my first time going through elections with the 501st, but - and this may be against the rules, the norm, or logistically unfeasible but I would like voting to take place within the forums of the respective Detachment because:
It would encourage Detachment members to show up at least once a year. If even a quarter of the people who only logged in to vote actually stuck around, the boards - and by extension the Detachment would be made stronger. A perspective voter would have to make an effort to exercise their voting privilege. And if a voter doesn't bother to do their due diligence, we would all be better served if they abstained. I also think if a candidate DOESN'T bother to at the very least show up to publicly accept their nomination ON THE FORUMS, that they should automatically have their candidacy rescinded.
Although none of what I just said is a question per se, feel free to let me know if I'm off base or on to something.

    Now, on to my final question;
To BOTH candidates, you have raised good points in the Q & A's.  What, if any of your opponent's ideas would you like to implement during your run as our Detachment Leader and why.
If there isn't one that you would use, please pick one that you DON'T like in particular and explain why it lacks merit.

Thank you both for putting yourselves out there, there have been a fair share of awkward moments and it can't have been entirely comfortable.
Regardless of the outcome, I look forward to your leadership in the coming year, and if you're there meeting you in Orlando.

Thank for your questions and your appraisal of the current "lack" of our third candidate.

I will agree with Bob about the urgency of completing unfinished CRLs.  Maybe not all the ideas of implementing them, but definitely the spirit of it.  I'm not looking to disagree with everything that Bob is proposing.   This is supposed to be fun and a hobby.  If I had to pick one point that Bob has suggested, I'd have to choose the majority of IOC business to be conducted on a Facebook page.  I've stated before that even a closed FB page isn't as secure as we'd like it to be.  But the main downfall would be locating past information, it's next to impossible at times on FB.   However, and IOC "social" page would be a great way to alert members to new information and to direct them via a link, to the forums.

Thanks again for your great questions and I'll look for you in Orlando.

Mark, I'll take Hawk's question and turn it to you. How would you encourage discussions on new costumes to become making the costumes and then the CRL? I've seen too many comments of "I'll wait until the CRL is finished" - people unwilling to take the chance and maybe have to redo part of a costume later. And how do we recognize those took the jump - the CRL model is recognized, but what about everyone else who put in the work?

There is always a thread open for each  new costume as they appear.  Members do share ideas and progress for new costumes as they are made.  Some of the people try to be first so they can be the ones to write a CRL or use their pics for the CRL.  This can lead to the debating.  Competition can be good, but not all the time.  But it is correct the at the CRL can't be "finished" before a costume is made.  However, we could post the written portion but a CRL with no pics are harder to follow.

How can we recognize those that jumped at the task of making the first costumes?  I'm not sure yet.  Is that the only reason people rush to make the "first" costume?  Maybe for some.  What we need is a team.  A team whose goal is to create and maintain accurate CRL's for everyone in the Legion to use. A team that will share ideas and come up with the answers swiftly as possible.  It isn't a job for one person.  The IOC needs to achieve this as a team...and we will.

A follow up question for Mark (that dovetails with Katrina's line of questioning); Knowing first hand the duties required of a Detachment Leader, and the amount of time and energy it takes to execute those duties effectively - Would you commit yourself SOLELY to the IOC, stepping away from your FISD post, and if need be your role as a GML in your home garrison?

If, it does prove to be too much, then yes, I would cut back on other commitments.  As I posted earlier, I'm very comfortable with each position and they don't take up too much extra time.   The GML position is keeping new members informed and the new approvals.  I have a routine set and it works very well.  I have a lot of spare time normally and I spend 90% of it doing this, I live for the IOC and the 501st.

I want to add to my last answer.  I just found out that about a year ago, the LMO and DL's agreed not to post incomplete CRL's.  That has added to the assumption the CRL's aren't being worked on, they are, but not available as of yet.

We will still strive to speed these up.  The CRL's aren't the only function of the Detachment, but they are a priority.

    For Mark

First, I understand that you have been juggling multiple positions between your garrison, FISD, and IOC. Is it correct that those other commitments are continuing on? How do you plan to allocate and prioritize sufficient time and effort to run things here?

Second, what deficiencies do you see in the current state of the detachment? What improvements do you propose or best practices from other legion groups have you picked up that can be implemented? Thanks

I do plan to keep the other positions as well.  The main way I'm going to manage this detachment and the others is that I don't plan on doing all by myself.  I have a great staff to assist in the day to day workings of this detachment.  I have already been doing a bulk of it for a while now anyway.  As for my GML position, I have a proven system set up that makes my approval process fairly efficient.  The FISD position has assistance as well.
I've been multitasking for years and it just comes natural to me.  For example, I have 3 computer screens set up on my computer and I have tabs open for several sites at all time. It's just normal for me to keep an eye on multiple tasks.

The glaring problem is in the CRL process.  That will be the first priority for me.  I will get with the LMO and map out the remaining needs for each CRL.  Then we will establish a common CRL area for interested members can add there ideas.  As soon as possible, we will set up a poll to ratify the CRL's  and/or changes.  Believe me, I want to get the CRLs where they should be asap.

    Motoss asks:

Hello candidates!  Thanks you for accepting nominations.  Here are my questions:

    1.  As others have noted we are the second largest detachment - however, smaller detachments have had much more success in actually introducing new costumes and putting out CRLs.  What role do you see the DL in moving this process along?

    2.  Our main costume is commonly used as a backup or when handlers are needed.  Bridge crew is beginning to be the "go-to" low budget costume for recruits in addition to Staff Officer.  Do you have any plans to help get more members in the officer uniform or to wear the officer uniforms they have more often?

    3.  For members of the Detachment who already have their costume built and don't intend to add on any more costumes within our Detachment, what do you feel the Detachment site adds for these members other than merch?

1- Let try to give a brief outline in the CRL process:
        1. Someone has to actually make the costume. 2. Said person must approach the DL or LMO to begin collectively working on it. The person must be involved because they can explain the costume parts and materials probably better than say me. 3. DL and LMO team must compile a detailed description and all agree what it should look like as well as all wording. 4. High-res photos must be taken of the model, all costume items for their individual descriptions and be photoshopped to remove background. 5. Then it goes to the LMO and legion Web Team where it will be in queue for addition the the main CRL wiki and be visible to everyone.
This isn't the answer to you question but the process that is involved.   The hold up has been some excessive debating on details that can maybe wait for amendment at a later date.  There is also quite a few CRLs for the LMO to add.   I will be able to take a more active stance in getting these added.  Members need to remember that this is a team effort and that not everyone's draft or pics can be used for the CRL.  The best version for the Legion will be used and sometimes, the DL doesn't make the final decision.  Ultimately, the LMO has the final say.
All I can do is to promise to do my best to smooth out the wrinkles in the process and to create a forum for interested IOC members can add to this process.

2- Promote, suggest and lead by example.  That is how I get members of my Garrison to don an IOC costume.  I just make it look good, that makes others want to do it.  I will promote the Halls of Commemoration awards to urge members to wear and document IOC costume trooping.  I may even consider some swag awards.

3-  Some of the best friendships I have were started in the IOC.  We try to add information and to provide a platform to share ideas and triumphs.  We are an information source, a lot of members only want that but I try to make a welcoming and safe place to share.   But you have to admit, we've had some great merch too.

I am a strong believer in leading by example. To that end, I believe that the leader of any of our Detachments should strive for the highest quality possible in regards to their costumes and screen accuracy. The Executor/Imperator program is a great way to recognize those achievements, and I personally believe the system does very well. That being said, here are my questions:

    1) For Rob and Robert: I see that neither of you have any recognition in either of those programs for higher levels of costume accuracy. Do you have specific reasons for your lack of participation? Are your personal costumes up to a high standard and do they match what we see on-screen in an exemplary fashion? What are your likes/dislikes about the Executor/Imperator program, and what, if anything, will you change should you be selected to lead?

    2) For Mark: In contrast, you have multiple costumes that meet the standards of the Imperator/Executor program. Do you believe the program is working as intended? What, if anything, would you change about it?

Thank you for your time, gentlemen, and best of luck!

I think these programs are working great.  They challenge members to perfect their costumes and to present a better image for the IOC.  I do intend to promote these programs more, just the attract more excited members.

Question to: ID-4584 Mark C. Ryner (Northern Darkness Garrison)

How do you see the importance of the IOC forum?

The IOC forum a source for information.  A place of friendship.  It's the foundation of the Officer and the other related costumes.
The IOC strives to give the best possible information to those who seek it.  We enjoy a relaxed atmosphere and open forum to share ideas and to look for those elusive details to put the finishing touch on a great costume.
It is also a platform to hone that costume to the next level, to achieve that personal goal of Executor and even Imperator.
It is a place of fellowship, It is the IOC.

    Daetrin asks:

    All candidates:
    1. For new GML's it can be hard to learn the ins and outs of the costumes.  Do you have thoughts on what a strategy would look like to help new GMLs or existing GMLs not familiar with the costumes get up to speed quickly?
    2. For existing GMLs (yup, another years in the harness it looks like for me), given the explosiveness of new costumes that have come and are coming, what are you thoughts for keeping us informed of CRL changes?   Yes, I may be on IOC a lot because I'm the webmaster, but the truth is there is no way I can keep on top of all the new costumes in the detachments, and neither can any GML, so in this case I'm speaking for most GMLs who don't come here much.
    3. Let's say it's 2018 and your term is up. Looking back, how will you measure the success of your year?

1- We need to post any new information we have on a new costume in the appropriate section of the forum.  The forum is organized in categories to aid in fast locating of needed information.  We are also available to answer and questions in the GML forum section of the 501st message boards, as well as any questions posted on the IOC forum or via PM.

2- Any major changes can be announced on the same GML section on the 501st forum.  Also, we would make all new information available on the IOC forum in the correct section.

3 -  I plan on looking back on a year that saw many, if not all, of the CRL's updated and published.  A year that we welcomed many new Executors and Imperators.  Also, another year of smooth operation in the nicest Detachment in the 501st Legion.

    For all 3 candidates:

For many troopers, an IOC uniform is their first one in the 501st (it was for me!).  Unfortunately I've met some troopers that once they get that first set of armor done though, it's goodbye to the officer or crewman, never to be seen again.  What are your thoughts on keeping IOC members engaged with their costumes, to work to upgrade them or to build new ones even after they have other 'exciting' detachment costumes?  (Not saying my Staff Officer isn't exciting, that goes without saying!  )

Personally, I promote changing costumes and each troop, start with one, then change into one or two more.  It's a challenge to change when no one notices it.  Several members of my Garrison are starting officer costumes for an addition costume, some for comfort, some because I make an officer look so good...lol!  It's another instance of leading by example.  Go into a troop looking sharp and maintaining the Imperial Officer persona.  I makes others to want to do the same.  The best compliment I ever received was, "You really have 'Imperial Bastard' down don't you?"

Question for all candidates ; How will you ensure that high standards are consistently maintained at the 501st for IOC applicants and that they are guided appropriately when GML approvals can often be variable at Garrison level? In short, how will you keep the local systems in line?

The best way to ensure the standards are maintained would be through communication.  How?  Glad you asked.  There is a forum specifically for the GMLs and any updates or improvements can be discussed on that forum.  The Detachment Leader and Executive Officers are also made available on that same forum to answer specific questions from a GML that may not be familiar with one of our costumes.
We can also help maintain the standards by monitoring the CRL for each IOC costume.  There are changes made by people other than IOC members, so we have to help keep that straight.
