  1. Joseph,
I'm sorry to inform you, your ISB officer uniform has failed to reach the requirements outlined in the costume reference library (CRL).

Your tunic has two seams in addition to those outlined in the CRL, and are not permitted as they do not match screen references.

This does not detract from the quality of the uniform you have created. I particularly like the choice of belt boxes, belt, buckle and boots. The weight and colour of the fabric used for the tunic is also high quality.

  2. I went with a similar style cap when I first started the costume, without doing enough research I couldn't see the problem. Whilst reasonably well made they're not very accurate. The peak is a little too long, the peak should really be more like an ellipse than a circle. The main part of this cap is cylindrical instead of conical.

It's taken me a while to find some of my early pics, believe me when I say I'm not proud of them, and cringe when I see them.

I worked with another lady, who sadly no longer produces custom caps to identify the differences between the inaccurate and onscreen cap.

As you can see my black cap sits too far back on the head, the proportions of the peak are wrong, and main shape of the cap was more cylindrical than conical.

Here's a pic of what we came up with.

This is my current cap (Museum Replicas, sadly discontinued)

This is the look you're aiming for

  3. My buckles are 1/8 or 3/16 thick. Unless you're really keen on making your own buckle, I'd recommend a Tandy blank buckle, with a bit of elbow grease you can remove the scratches. I've bought a couple of these, some are more scratched than others, but I managed to clean them up with a little perseverance.

  4. Whilst I'm not sure how rank bars where attached in the films, I wasn't aware of the ANH or RotJ rank bars having holes in the corners. I've noticed a hole on one of the rank bars in ANH (can't remember which, maybe Lieutenant Chilsden), but this wasn't in the corner, and assumed it was just a mark or crap piece of metal. I know a number of ESB rank bars have holes (Ozzel and Sheckil), I never thought this was because these were used as a method of attaching them, but it seems logical.

Personally I wouldn't attach a rank bar with anything that permanently marks the uniform (sewing being highly accurate or not). I'd use earth magnets, one glued to the back of the rank bar and the other loose on the inside the jacket. Yes you may nudge the rank bar and need to adjust it, but it allows you freely change which officer you wish to emulate (I vary between Captain Khurgee, Lieutenant Sheckil and General Veers - depending on whether or not there are other officers at the troop. I find it nice to have a mixture of ranks at the troop - it would look odd if everyone turned up a Grand Moff ;) ). Also as someone pointed out to me "it's nice to see an older person costume a senior officer" ... thanks, I find it a little odd if you have someone in their early twenties playing a Grand Moff ... but I digress ;)

I attach recommend attaching rank bar with earth magnets, add the holes and maybe some fake stitching to imply the rank badge was sewn on - for that real attention to detail.

If you can supply evidence of this stitching in the way of photo's I'd love to see them, I'm always looking to improve the accuracy of my costumes.

  5. Yesterday I received an email to inform me I'd been nominated for the Imperial Officer Corp Detachment Leader position. Needless to say I was flattered by the nomination, I'm an Officer Armourer in the UK Garrison, assisting people with their Officer costume builds and offering constructive criticism in ways they can improve their costume to make it look like they just stepped off the movie set.

I'm pleased, using reference found here, to say I was the first person in the 501st to clear with the movie accurate 'Fahrenheit 451' style Staff Officer uniform, and have both Imperator standard Line and Staff Officer uniforms.

I've been a member of this forum for a number of years, and have supported the current detachment leader Mr Savage.

Sadly, after a lot of thought, I've declined the nomination. I believe Mr Savage is doing a great job with the detachment, I would like to offer him my support and am looking to assist the Imperial Officer Corp detachment staff where possible.

    Thanks,

    Phil Riches

  6. I think this picture, (some of the UK Garrison officers), helps to illustrate the difference in colours, even within the same company. I don't think it would be right to have a Museum Replicas olive cap on a CosplaySky uniform, but Staff officer works well.

  7. For a new Outpost these guys are pros. I spent four days with them trooping at the Russian Comic Con (the first one) and enjoyed every minute.

They were excellent hosts, what they lack in membership (I imagine this will quickly change) - they make up for with enthusiasm, passion and community.

If you get a chance I'd thoroughly recommend trooping with them.

  8. Turns out the project manager for this is an acquaintance of mine from the reenactment world. I can ask about the comparison, but I doubt that a side by side shot exists. They only finished the prototype last week for SDCC. My guess is that the research was done well before the uniform was made. I'll ask though.

Cheers, it'd be great to see. It'd also settle a lot of speculation over the colour of the uniform.

After seeing the pic from SDCC I'm excited about these new uniforms.

  9. On the whole I like it. I'd be interested to hear how accurately the colour matches Tarkins, I believe the ANH uniforms in real life were greyer than they appeared on film. But from a screen accurate perspective it looks nice - once they fix the collar.

I hope they correct the peak of the cap, in my opinion it's too long ... it's one of my pet hates on fan made Officer caps.

  10. Well worth the two hour drive each way. It was great seeing the guys. As soon as I saw Kenneth Colley (Admiral Piett) had signed up for the convention I booked the date, I haven't seen him sign up for any other conventions, and Michael Culver isn't as frequent either. I had a good chat about officer uniform material with Alan Flyng, and touched base with Chris Muncke - the real Captain Khurgee (getting my first picture of me in costume next to him). Great day - "I love the core!"
