I read the comic and the cadets never wore a helmet. We could discuss wether it's something only army recruits wear, or it's special to a certain academy e.g. Coruscant without and Lothal with helmet. But in the end we have different sources with different results. I don't see any reason to give Rebels a preference and dump the Thrawn comic, especially when the optional helmet would allow both versions.

I get what Jeff's saying, but I agree that it should be optional - or a separate CRL if we can show it's only for STs - but then who would it fall under, really?

I like the idea of more add-on uniforms, in the way that TIE Reserve Pilot leads to TIE Pilot, or a Line Officer can also become an AT-AT Commander. I'm not sure that's entirely analogous, but I think there's sufficient evidence here to make the helmet optional at any rate.

xAlpha reacted to GDMorti in FO - Tunic clasp/closure amend
    Hi guys

Please can the closure information for all current First Order tunic CRLs be looked at when possible? Just a few small wording amendments.

Lieutenant/Captain/General/Hux - Can "Buck" clasps be replaced with the correct word "Busk"? "Buck clasp" is a typo from what I can tell. Technically, they should just be hook and eye closures, and not busk at all. If you google busk, it's very difficult to understand what exactly you need to use for these uniforms. If we want to get super technical, "Wide hook and eye closures" will bring up the most accurate results if googled without needing to specify sizes, brands etc.

Major/Colonel - As this is so reminiscent of the Imperial tunics, is there no reason why hidden snaps could not be used here? It's a foldover tunic, hook and eyes would probably be unhelpful. Use of hook and eyes were not mentioned in the submitted CRL draft, only that closures, whatever they were, be hidden. The CRL tunic actually uses snaps, too

The closures on LT/Cap/Gen/Hux are super specific and really important to the look, they're seen on screen so many times, so I think any and all help we can give makers and GML's in "what is correct" will be very beneficial. As for the blue uniforms, specifying hook and eyes is incorrect and unhelpful, when they should be using hidden snaps I would imagine. Placement and number is entirely at the whim of the builder so long as they're hidden, much like all the other foldover tunics should be.

    Thankyou!

That was exactly my thought. They're training to become armored troops, and quite specifically in combat training in that episode. I'm sure Striker Academy has some kind of cadet flightsuit that's totally different, too, based on their purpose.

Same (I do a Red Army impression for WW2 reenacting). If nothing else, I've been drooling over the pics of the actual uniforms in here.

    Hi there everyone.

I just want to make a quick announcement about the CRL process.  Since we have a new LMO rep this year and a New LMO in charge of the LMO office, there will be a brief delay in any updates for new CRL being finalized or published.  Hopefully by mid March, things will be up and running.  However, that doesn't mean the preliminary work in this forum needs to stop.

Thanks for all the great input.

I've been lurking your research thread (which is fantastic btw), and I'm glad to see this put up for consideration. I have some familiarity with the Russian source costumes from university and historical costuming adventures, and I think you've translated both source materials into a CRL very well.

xAlpha reacted to Riviate in First 501st Convention
Just been to my 1st convention as an offical 501st member.

It was at SciFiWorld - The Scandinavian Sci-Fi, Game & Film Convention, a convention I've attended to for several years now, enjoyed greatly and had the chance to pick up signed photographs from various actors while they've been there as guests.

So it was, of course, very special to attend this year not as a visitor but as part of the convention itself along with my unit: Nordic Garrison, as well as having the chance to meet more fellow members. We also had none other than Daniel Naprous (Darth Vader, Rogue One) as guest this year, which was a great moment for us.

Happily providing a link of the Sci-fiWorld in case anyone happens to be going to Scandinavia soon: http://www.scifiworld.se/index_M2018.html

And of course, cant have an Imperial garrison around without a little internal drama among Officers. So here's ID-10587 and ID-19013 in a heated argument about....something.

Here are some changes I want to make to my CRL proposal. First I want to take out the fabric suggestion on level 1 because it is wrong. On level 1 and 2 the fabric choice should be up to the costumer. We know that that the NY police tunics were made out of blue wool, which looked black on screne,  so that should be stated in level 3. I am also taking out the exact height of the collar because everybody neck has a different length. I made the changes in green.

    Tunic
    For 501st approval:
Fabric should be black or a very dark blue Tunic is double-breasted with a left over right closure on the tapered yoke. Yoke comes straight across from the collar center not coming up to the shoulder seam. The standing collar has square corners and should cover ½ to 2/3 of the neck. A modesy panel can be present. Sleeves are long, and without decoration, cuffs or buttons Tunic shall not have the standard code cylinder pockets. Darts and princess seams on the front are permitted for a better fit of the tunic A seam running the entire circumference of the tunic, dividing the top from the skirt is permitted
For level two certification (if applicable):
There is a seam down the center of the yoke There is top stitching down the yoke about 50mm from the edge There is a slit on both side seams that goes up about 1/3 of the total length of the tunic Sleeves have two seams, one along the bottom and one along the back. The point of the yoke comes across and slightly up.
For level three certification (if applicable):
The fabric should be dark blue wool. There are princess seams on the back of the tunic There is a seam down the center of the back There shall be no seam running the entire circumference of the tunic There is top stitching on the top of the yoke running from the middle seam around the yoke down the hem. The top stitching is about 10mm from the edge. There is top stitching around the wrist area of the sleeve. The top stitching is about 10mm from the edge. There is top stitching around the bottom hem of the front and back of the tunic. The top stitching in about 10mm from the edge. There is top stitching around the edge of the collar. The top stitching is about 10mm from the edge There is lining inside the tunic Snaps or buttons hidden behind a panel are used for closure There shall not be extra darts or princess seams on the front

Bad guys always have cooler uniforms in movies and comics. Better ships, too. The big thing for me is that, in real life, I try to do good as often as I can (and the 501st is one way to do that, to be honest), so in "fantasy" I often choose the bad guys or dark side or evil path. It's a way to get that out of my system, I guess. Although reenacting-wise, this is the only "bad guy" impression I do. Hmm....

Plus, I feel like good villains, while rare, are the way to make the protagonist seem even better. For example, almost every villain Jason Isaacs has played (including the Inquisitor) tends to be someone with actual power, not an easy guy to take down by the plucky hero. The Empire is the same way; it takes a lot of work, they're truly powerful, and that means the heroes are made that much better by the dark side existing.

As a child, the Tie Fighter computer game was the thin end of the wedge. It presented the imperial experience as being a vulnerable individual in the midst of an unsympathetic bureaucracy. While the imperial war machine taken as a whole seems overwhelming, individual bucket-heads can feel like underdogs when the films pit their paper thin ships and armor against the narrative invulnerability of the rebels. The empire feels more fallible, and therefore more interesting. To be honest I only started to take a shine to the rebels when Rogue 1 presented them with more vulnerability and moral ambiguity.
