I just wanted to share a personal milestone I reached yesterday.  This is a pic from my 169th IOC troop, but it also happened to be my 250th 501st troop!

I started this journey back in 2011. I have met so many of great 501st members, as well as many from other Star Wars costuming groups.  I've seen so many smiling faces as we've shared our Love of Star Wars and desire for helping Charity.  I've always tried to remember that we are doing this for that reason and tried to be as diplomatic as possible with everyone I've worked with.  Sometimes, things get misinterpreted or misunderstood and opinions have differed, but I Love and respect everyone that has joined me on this journey that we all are following through this Galaxy, far, far away.

Interesting everyone comparing the Empire to the Third Reich when it’s really closer in structure and attitude to the British Colonial Empire of the early 20th century.

I’m mostly looking at this from a Canon only perspective.

The core (home islands) was wealthy and generally peaceful and prosperous under Imperil rule. There was some civil strife and horrid working conditions for the lowest classes (just like industrial Britain).

The emperor was largely a “hands off” ruler at times, allowing his regional governments to rule the empire and promoting a culture of cronyism, much like the British Monarchy at the turn of the century.

If you look at the worlds outside the galactic core they are all left mostly under semi autonomous control of regional moffs and governors, some prosper and are very pro Empire (Canada, Australia, New Zealand), others suffer under oppression (India, Africa), while even others are stripped bare of resources and exploited (again Africa, the Caribbean , the Far East).

Revolts and rebellions were handles roughly, and at times with very questionable methods both by the Empire and Imperial Britain.

Even the imperial uniforms have more in common with First World War British Officer uniforms than anything Third Reich.

A similar comparison could be made between the Empire and Imperial Germany, but to me it’s more akin to the British Empire at its height.

So really the Empire is neither good nor evil, both can be true from “A certain point of view” - Ben Kenobi.

Now the Third Reich comparison can easily be played at the First Order, which is far less subtle in its approach and is vocally genocidal and fanatical.

    Greetings IOC,
I was going to post this in a prior thread but decided to start a new one instead of taking over someone's thread.

Something to keep in mind, we worked on almost all the CRL's last year and the LMO team is involved with a lot of cool upgrades for ALL the CRL's.  As much as we'd like to update every detail, we have to remember that the purpose of the CRL system is to provide a guideline for the members and GML's to use in the basic approval process.  The CRL's are meant to be a guide for approval details that are required for approval, not a build schematic for assembling a costume.  Some of the requested updates can be too detailed and not necessary for a CRL.

Build guides are supposed to be in the various build areas of the forum for each specific costume.

With this being said.  We are about to launch the CRL team program.  There will be 2, 3 members teams to work on the details of the CRL's.  One will concentrate on the Imperial era costumes and the other will be working on the First Order area.

We will still take suggestions for new CRL's and updates, but the brunt of the work will be done by the staff and the appropriate teams.  This has been requested by the LMO team, due to the time it has been taking to debate every minute detail in open forum.  Not long ago, we had no say in how a CRL was made, we want to keep in the loop, so to say.

The members that present an idea for a specific CRL will be kept in the process, provided a costume is in the process of being made for a CRL model.  We will not present a CRL to the LMO team without the proper, visual references to even make a CRL and a costume in process for a model.  The LMO team will no longer post an unfinished CRL.

While CRL maintenance is a big part of what we do, it isn't the most important part of the IOC.   The main goal is to provide a platform to assist and encourage new and present members to get and share information in the creation of Imperial and First Order uniforms  and assist them, as needed, in the approval  process.  As well as to have a fun time, helping children of all ages in our various charitable goals.

See, I thought they were part of the Stormtrooper Corp., which is why I thought, if they had any dress uniform, it would be the Staff officer (which is the Stormtrooper branch).

Ultimately, it doesnt really matter. I always encourage my hard armored Garrison mates to get an officer (any officer) so they can kit down into something more comfortable. I say, whichever officer you like, build/wear that.

I need to open by saying I could not have drafted this pattern without the help/photos Ellen Streichfuß provided, and the helpful tutorial thread by Joey Lim. I just wanted to drop photos of my work here in case it is helpful!

Your measurements will vary! These are based off my measurements but this should give you a better idea of the pattern pieces & proportions.

    Front bottom layer:

Note: The finished bottom layer sits roughly 3" higher than the finished middle/top layer.

    Front middle layer:

Note: The flat-felled seams belong to the top layer, I just show them here for the sake of positioning.
Feel free to give yourself MORE of a bleed at the sides if you would like. I had to measure extremely carefully. If that worries you, feel free to make the bleeds a whole 2"!
To make the pocket I Just traced the left side but stopped 5" into the pattern. (so 2" for a nice large bleed, 1" for the side thing, 2" for the pocket)

    Front top:

I kept calling them flat-felled seams but honestly I just wound up folding them under, pinned it to the middle, and sewed it down roughly 1/4" from the edge. I was going to get fancier but the more I looked at the refs and what others were doing the less I felt it was necessary.

This is how the entire top looks together:

It's clearer here how the back sits 3" higher than the front.
Also there's no good way (I found) for me to tell you how to position the pocket & position this on the yoke. I did the yoke first and just kind of pinned the front where I thought it looked good and eyeballed the top of the pocket. This is kind of why I didn't do a full step-by-step tutorial. A lot of this is just "hold it up and see if it looks okay".  Same goes for where exactly you attach this piece to your yoke. When I was planning the above pieces, I wasn't sure of the length measurement, I wound up just kind of winging it by putting the finished yoke on top of my tunic then measuring from the front center of the yoke to roughly where I thought the front should fall. I added 3" to the bottom of the top, pocket & middle pieces so I could fold them under and attach it to the bottom piece, so there's no top seam.  (again this is was so, ridiculously, winged)

    Yoke back:

So I feel bad, I should have put the pattern weights on this one because it's actually 18.5" wide. It just came up a little short because the folds weren't flat enough, sorry about that. The size will vary depending on your shoulder width, but this is the gist of the shape!

    Front left:

    Front top right:

I decided to put a slight curve into mine. I liked it better when I was mocking up my test fabric on the mannequin. I thought it looked a little closer to the reference photos I was looking at. I'm not 100% sure if this is how they did it, or if it's actually straight and the camera was playing tricks on me. So feel free to cut it in whichever way looks best to you personally!

    Front bottom right:

This goes under the top piece, the top piece will snap/velcro down to this.

Roughly how the front goes together:

I put a HUGE bleed in the front center because  I knew I had to top-stitch and I was afraid of not catching the fabric beneath it. Turned out to be a non-issue and I could have made that bleed smaller, oops.

The neck is just a folded-over strip that's roughly 3" (so 6" total then fold it) so I didn't make or include a pattern piece for it. I have a quilting ruler I just traced for that purpose!

I was going to post my cape but HONESTLY I like charlyselo's cape better. His tutorial wasn't live when I did my poncho, otherwise I would have used his method in this thread here.

    Here's my final.

Hi everyone, in order to help me understand the numerous variants of the black uniforms & what costume components could be used in other configurations, I created the Shared Components Matrix.  That black flight suit is quite ubiquitous!  I hope you find this useful.

It's not an official 501st document, just something I put together to help current & aspiring members.  The CRL is always the official reference which goes into more detail than I could include here.

(It has been pointed out that "Navy Trooper - Dress Uniform" isn't included; it would have made the matrix 3 columns wider due to all its own variations, and I had to stop somewhere...!)  So it's not

This last weekend I won a cosplay contest as Captain Beckett at a local con, and decided I wanted some better pictures in this character. So I met up with Izzy at our Tatooine Wall we made for South Valley Squad, and we got to work! The costume is not screen accurate yet, more fairly it is "Inspired by", but I really like this uniform and wanted to troop this character regardless!

This whole thread has been very enlightening and made me think of how I present myself as an officer. I've always been a professional and carry myself like an officer and I just be like me. Most of the time I just can't help but smile because of how much fun I'm having. Being an officer, I've always tried to be in essence a back-up handler. I'm always looking out for the armored troopers though keeping them safe. I will keep all this in mind at my future troops.

I don't remember that one there is the Imperial Adjutant (Warrand Officer Ardwyl Hercho) that has 5 blue bars and a code cylinder on each side.
(Edit I went out side to watch those videos and you are talking about a complete different officer lol when I read the post the videos were not visible)

And on the hat thing there is a raft of protocol as to when a hat is work and official functions, It can be a simple as hats are collected at a central point, or held or worn it depends on when who and where. All military's have there own rules. As those images of a party on a criminal crime boss's ship  I think how the uniforms are worn would be of very little consequence if ISB found out lol.
