  1. The spirit of L2 approval is supposed to be "a step up from basic approval", as opposed to L3 being the "you look like you stepped off the screen" level, so L2 is not meant to be nearly as picky.  As long as the applicant's rank bar (and code cylinders) met the L1 and L2 criteria I would not contradict what I just said above and I would approve the applicant with that particular configuration.  However, I would strongly recommend to the applicant that they change up their rank bar/code cylinder configuration to one that is more closely aligned with what we've seen on actual staff officers, particularly if they wish to apply for L3 (where a film canon rank bar is required), and point them to the rank bar guide for further information.

This brings up something that should be on the list of potential CRL changes (if it's not already): making sure L3 rank bar criteria are consistent across all applicable CRLs (so ANH Staff Officer, Staff Officer (Non-Saga), Line Officer, and the now retired Staff Officer).  Line Officer and Staff Officer already specify "Rank chosen must be referenced from film canon officers."  ANH Staff Officer does not specify this, but it's not necessary as the L1 requirements already specify the four possible rank bars for this uniform.  Staff Officer (Non-Saga) does not have any L3 requirement for the rank bar.

I'd like to see all these CRLs (except ANH I guess :) ) with consistent L3 criteria, and update it to state "rank chosen must be from LFL official sources" as opposed to "film canon officers", since we have a lot more LFL official sources than the five Empire-era movies to pull from (e.g. The Mandalorian, half a bazillion comics, oh and let's not open up the can of worms that is Rebels rank configurations ;) ).  The rank bar guide I linked above also needs to be updated (and possibly referenced in the CRL itself if that's a thing we can do).  It was last updated in 2017 so contains info from R1 and Solo, but not from The Mandalorian or any newer comics.

  2. Hey everybody!  Bob mentioned this topic earlier today in his detachment newsletter, but the discussion for it has thus far been on the staff-only section of the forums, which isn't visible to the membership at large.  So, I would like to duplicate my comments here to solicit more feedback.

I would like to make three changes to the judging standards used by deployment officers to judge L2/L3 (Executor/Imperator) submissions.  I believe these changes will remove some subjectivity and ambiguity from the process.  These changes primarily affect Imperator (L3) submissions since the criteria for those is higher than they are for Executor (L2).

    1. Judging done on CRL specifications only; no unwritten/subjective criteria

In the past, applicants have been judged on criteria that are not explicitly spelled out in the CRL, such as the presence of undyed vs. dyed edges on belts, edge grooves on belts, numbers of belt holes, jodhpur shape, tunic length, etc.  Since these are not spelled out in the CRL (or were not in the past; some may be now), there is no way for the applicant to prepare in advance unless they are "in the know", and there is no guarantee the unwritten criteria will be applied consistently across all applicants and different deployment officers.

Going forward, we will judge applicants solely based on what is explicitly stated in the CRL.  Some of the criteria I mentioned above have since been added into their respective CRLs (such as undyed belt edges on the ANH Staff Officer CRL) anyway.  If any deployment officers or other IOC staff believe we should be judging based on criteria that are not currently in the CRL, we will discuss them as CRL edits and get them added there (if the consensus goes that way) before they will be used to judge any L2/L3 submissions.

This does not mean that deployment officers are prevented from making recommendations or suggestions to applicants based on details that are present in reference material but aren't explicitly stated in the CRLs.  However, these recommendations will be in the form of suggestions only, and will not be used to deny L2/L3 applications.

    2. Emulating an on-screen/canon officer is encouraged, but not required.

One of the current expectations for L3 submissions is that the applicant emulate a specific officer configuration (in other words a specific rank bar + code cylinder + belt box + glove + sidearm + any other accessory configuration).  Again, for "generic" CRLs, this isn't spelled out as a L3 requirement.  As long as the applicant's individual costume pieces meet CRL criteria and they are in a configuration that makes sense for that costume (for example: no OT rank bar with Rogue One belt boxes), we will not require that the applicant pick a specific officer configuration and emulate them.

We still encourage applicants to emulate a specific officer configuration since that's the easiest way to be really really accurate :) and it's a way to show love to a favorite canon officer :VeersOfficer:, but again, this is only if the applicant wants to.

    3. One submission per CRL/version

In the past, multiple L3 submissions have been allowed on a single CRL, due to the requirement that applicants emulate an on-screen officer.  Some applicants were then able to rack up many L3 awards on a single costume by switching accessories (for example: submitting their line officer as Admiral Piett, then General Tagge, then Captain Needa). Instead, we propose to allow only one L2 and one L3 submission for an approved costume on a single discrete CRL.

The exception to this will be for CRLs with version tabbing.  An applicant can submit one L2 and one L3 submission for each version of a CRL.  For example, Krennic has four version tabs, so someone could conceivably submit four L2 and four L3 applications if they have all the required options.

  3. OK, so!  After conferring with the rest of staff (thanks Kalani!), I have learned that even though the original "Staff Officer" CRL is no longer active, it is still documented and I am allowed to use it for any L2/L3 submissions for this costume.  (There can't be any new costume approvals using this particular CRL, but we can still do L2/L3 judging of existing costumes using it.)

    So, you have two options:

    1. Have your existing costume judged to L2 (and later L3 if you want) using the original "Staff Officer" CRL.

    2. Upgrade your costume to conform to the specs in the new "Staff Officer (Non Saga)" CRL.  However, if you do this, you will need to resubmit your costume to your GML to be approved as "Staff Officer (Non Saga)" (and have your original "Staff Officer" costume retired), and then you can resubmit the costume for L2 approval here

Since your costume is already approved with the "Staff Officer" CRL and I believe you've completed all the previously requested modifications, option 1 is likely the simplest/easiest in your current situation.  You could also go with option 1 now, get your grandfathered costume L2/L3 approved, and then at some point in the future you could make the changes necessary for approval as "Staff Officer (Non Saga)", resubmit for L2/L3, and potentially rack up some more awards. :)

Regardless, I'll go ahead and pull together a list of what you'd need to change to conform to the new CRL, since it sounds like you want to go that direction eventually.  Let me know if my explanation above is confusing or if you have any more questions.  Thanks!!

  4. Hmm...actually you raise an interesting conundrum I didn't think about initially: namely, that the CRL for which you are seeking higher approval technically no longer exists.  The "Staff Officer" CRL was removed (with all approved costumes being grandfathered in), and the new "Staff Officer (Non-Saga)" CRL was added instead.  The two CRLs are very close, but since they aren't the same CRL anymore, I don't know if I would be able to clear you at a higher level on a grandfathered costume using the criteria on the new CRL.

Most likely what this means is you would need to resubmit your costume (with any necessary L1 modifications) to your GML, get it approved as "Staff Officer (Non-Saga)", have them remove your grandfathered "Staff Officer" costume, and then resubmit for L2 approval here.  But before you go through all that, let me confer with the other deployment officers and staff to make sure that is the correct course of action. (I'm still learning too. )

I will also go back through your earlier submission photos on this thread (tomorrow though) and get you a line by line list of what you would need to change to bring your costume more in line with the requirements in the non-saga CRL.  That way, if you have to get your costume reapproved by your GML it should go quickly, and then your subsequent L2 resubmission should go quickly as well.

Finally, as the owner of a staff officer costume with a red lining myself, allow me to compliment you on your excellent choice there. :D:D:D

  5. I wear my black hat (the one I troop with) before and after troops all the time. It's easier to put all my hair up in it at home, and just keep it up there after the troop until I get home. Now that I have the black and green hats Disney sells in the parks I wear those after troops. I've never been harassed, or complimented, or even had a comment made. I'm usually in my patch hoodie, but I've worn it out with a black winter coat and never had a problem then either.

Only time I have had someone make a Nazi comment to me was a photographer at a con, maybe in his early 20s, who asked me to "salute" and then did the Nazi salute to show me what he wanted. Honestly I was too shocked at what this kid was asking me to do that I could only stare in disbelief.

Anyway, that's just one person's experience. For reference I'm a white girl, pretty Aryan looking, living in the southern US, and I troop in pretty safe suburban areas. The only time I've wondered if someone might say something is riding the MARTA by myself to the DragonCon parade lineup, but even then I've been fine. But, your mileage may vary.

Secondly, the reason the CRL's have taken so long to get through is that the current DL, BJ, got swamped with real life job duties and it's the DL who has final say in the CRLs before they can go to the LMO.  So, the issue would seem to lie with BJ being caught up with other stuff and not delegating it off.

What I want to know is seeing that CRLs were stuck, what actions did you take in the past year to help unstick them, e.g. did you volunteer to help out at all?

I would like to extend this question, originally directed only to Bob, to the other two candidates as well.  Rob and Mark: What actions in the past year did you undertake to help with the backlog of CRL work needing to be done?

Followup question to Mark: based on the comment above, it seems that the CRL backlog is due to administrative actions needing to be performed by the Detachment Leader, which BJ was not able to complete in a timely manner due to real life concerns.  Again, based on the comment above, it sounds like this work may have been restricted to Detachment staff only, and could not be performed by non-staff members.  Therefore, as the Detachment XO, what did you do to help alleviate this issue and ensure that CRL documentation was not allowed to languish indefinitely?

Finally, one question directed to all three candidates.  It has been stated at least once in this question thread that the Detachment Leader position can be quite time consuming.  Rob: Do you hold any other staff positions within the Legion, or do you have any other outside commitments that would prevent you from dedicating enough time to this position?  Bob: You've stated you hold no other Legion staff positions this year.  Do you have any outside commitments that would prevent you from dedicating enough time to this position?  Mark:  You've stated that you hold a Staff position in the FISD, as well as your Garrison's GML position for the coming year.  Do you have enough free time to dedicate to three time-consuming positions, without letting one or more of them suffer?  (Do you sleep?  What's your secret? :D )

Thank you to all candidates for reading and responding, and I look forward to your answers.

  7. I'm going to have to get one of those lightsaber umbrellas now. I'd never thought of carrying a theme-appropriate umbrella! Then again, I've only done one outdoor troop with nasty weather, and we were thankfully able to spend most of our time under a shelter, so it hasn't been much of a concern for me yet.

  8. Many of my coworkers are huge geeks, so they enjoy hearing about my trooping adventures. My boss regularly asks me about the 501st because he's so amazed an organization like this even exists.

I've also "trooped" my office: showed up in full uniform before a TFA showing last year to hand out Imperial citations, and last week I suited up at the office so I wouldn't have to strip in a shopping center parking lot before a weekday troop. :D Not everybody understands it, but they all think it's neat that I turned my costuming super-hobby into a way to do some good in the community.

pecked out on my phone in tapatalk wheee

  9. I was describing my impressions of the Launch Bay uniforms which are displayed on mannequins, which I assume are Anovos items.  They had the $25 black cotton officer caps for sale on the shelf, which I know aren't Anovos and aren't approvable, but that was the only officer-type item I saw that you could buy there and take home.

Mike -- the caps you refer to, were they on the shelf and available to take home that day? If so I wonder what company produced them, if it wasn't Anovos.  Museum Replicas, maybe?  I'm not well versed in all the companies who have produced the official costume-type merch over the years.

My impression from the way all the Anovos costumes were displayed on the mannequins (not just the officer ones) is that there was only the bare minimum of effort put into dressing the mannequins by a bunch of employees who aren't fans and don't know what the costumes are really supposed to look like.  Belts on the officers and x-wing pilot were way too loose, the back flap on the officer cap was flipped down, the code cylinders and other bits on the pilot uniform were in the wrong spots (arm pockets vs. legs), Vader's cape was hanging oddly and his helmet was incredibly dusty, Vader's glove gauntlets were tucked inside the arms of his suit, the AT-AT driver uniform was clearly way too large for the mannequin, and so on.

I'm guessing anyone who works in the Launch Bay was instructed to say all the uniform items are Anovos, even if they aren't, because it's easier for them to remember and 95% of the tourists coming through that shop aren't crazy like us and don't care either way.

  10. I did a semi-thorough examination of the officer uniform in the Orlando Launch Bay when I was down there last month.  They have a "standard line" uniform where you can touch it, and a "premier line" uniform in a glass case.  (I got pretty up close and personal with the one you could touch, hehe.) Both uniforms on display were men's line officers, but I am assuming they use the same pattern for the staff officer uniforms.

The cap's greeblie is still glued on upside down, with the notch pointing down.  I don't know if they have fixed that in their production versions. The cap's bill has the required minimum number of stitched lines on it.

The belt buckle is nice, and the belt itself is not bad.  I'd hoped to buy just a belt buckle for my collection so I have a spare, but they no longer had any in stock.  The belt is undyed on the edges and back, which is screen accurate.  The belt comes with several notches already punched in it for the buckle, more than I think are screen accurate, which is why I'd intended to buy just the buckle.

The jacket collar needs a modesty panel to even qualify for Level 1 approval.

The uniform will never be approvable for Level 2 or 3 as the jacket's waist seam does not go all the way around the jacket.  The center front panel of the jacket is cut in one piece and does not have a waist seam.  Otherwise, the seaming and construction looks good.  The princess seams are correct, the jacket is fully lined, the code cylinder pockets are deep, the jacket closes with snaps, and there is no visible topstitching on the jacket.  It's just the center front panel that's the show stopper.

The jodhpurs have adjustment lacing just below the knees.  This is to be expected with this style of pant, but you need to be aware of where it falls on your leg so it's covered by your riding boots.  Tall people may find that the lacing is too high on their leg and visible above the top of the boot.

I flipped through the catalog (OK, the three ring binder) they had at the Launch Bay just to see the pricing.  The people there told me that if I ordered something, it would be delivered within 8 weeks.  This is almost certainly a delivery guarantee only if you order in the Launch Bay.

Overall, the uniform does look nice, and the fabric does have a good weight to it.  Because of the price, and the fact that you wouldn't be able to get it approved past Level 1, and the fact that you will almost certainly still need to get it tailored, I would have to recommend saving a couple hundred bucks by going with CosplaySky if you don't have a seamstress that can custom make you a uniform.

  11. Crossplay is approvable in the 501st, you just have to look the part.

My garrison has a woman who does Episode III pre-armor Vader/Anakin and troops a lot.  Organizers of "regular" events may prefer certain characters, but they can't put any sort of limitations on us.  For example, they can't say "we want Darth Vader and six Stormtroopers or no donation", so saying "no women dressed as men" is also bad.

About the only time we would have to follow limitations like that is a Disney/LFL event, like how they had certain guidelines and restrictions for Star Wars Weekends parades that were stricter than standard CRL requirements.  The only other instance I'm aware of like that is for Weird Al concerts, because he likes to have a Vader and 8 Stormtroopers, but he also specifies no visible human faces on stage(masked characters only).

So, exactly what you said with the wig and makeup and compression shirt.  Did you get in on the Hux boot preorder from Imperial Boots yet? :D

  12. The originals (or at least this particular jacket) didn't have a princess seam under the front flap.  It has a center front seam, horizontal seam just above the chest line (where the code cylinder pocket is), and a waist seam:

    jacket1.jpg

This would make it easier for the costume shop to stitch up a bunch of jackets for extras and move the snap closures to wherever they needed to be, without worrying about exposing a fitting seam.  Case in point: the unfortunate extra at left who's ended up in a jacket that's a little small for his belly:

    jacket2.jpg

However, adding that princess seam under the front flap makes it a lot easier to fit to the body, instead of trying to manipulate the pattern so all the chest fitting happens in the horizontal seam (where the code cylinder pocket is).  It's almost a requirement for the female officers in order to accommodate the bust, unless of course you're pretty flat-chested like me.

  13. Everybody's going nuts over making a Hux costume so I think I may start with Datoo first. Just need to go back and watch the movie again (for a fourth time!) and see if I can catch any more details, particularly on the back of the jacket.

The picture you've posted is from the Visual Dictionary.  That book has a full-length shot, and you can see he's wearing the standard jodhpurs from the classic officer costumes, although the shape coms to more of a point instead of being a rounded shape.  He's wearing the same knee-high zip up boots that Hux, Mitaka, and all the warrant officers wear.

  14. My guess is the hat and coat will end up being optional items for the CRL for him, since he's seen without one or both of those plenty of times.  The lower-ranking officers will likely end up with hats as a requirement.  So far I've done rough sketches of Hux's costume, although I still can't clearly see how the back of the overcoat lays so I'll probably just have to take a best guess there.  Planning to go back and watch the movie again in a week or so, in order to confirm uniform details and take more notes before I start drafting a pattern and doing a mockup.

I'm particularly interested in the one officer with what looks like a wraparound collar on his jacket, although I don't know if I'll be able to accurately record any details on that one until the Blu-ray comes out.
