Alay got a reaction from Detaleader in Belt Boxes for Andor Series (Dedra, ISB Non-Saga, etc)
Urethane casting has been around far longer than 3D printing and gives comparable results.
We don't know for certain whether they were ALL metal. Or anything. So we definitely should us language like "appearance of" rather than "is made of" or "painted to look like"

Understood. We're talking about different aspects of the same thing, though. I wasn't talking about the very corner bit, where there is a tiny relief cut to prevent corner puckering, I was talking about the actual edges of the metal, where you're literally looking at the thickness of the edges of the metal as it comes forward from the bend. That's the part that was made thicker when they 3D modeled it.
Had the box back been a solid piece of metal, and not had tabs folding forward, the metal would have needed relief cuts where the back "band" wraps around each corner, to replicate the look seen and generate those sharp edges, but that's not the case here, as the construction is different.

Yeah the relief cut on the bend is what they're talking about

Greetings fellow Imperials!
My name is Dan and I just got approved to join the 501st and Midwest Garrison yesterday!
I've been an avid Star Wars fan since I was 8 years old and cosplaying since 2005. I've known several 501st members over the years, and am so glad to finally be able to join the ranks!

I feel like the pill shape *requirement* should be an L3, detail, at best.

Were the measurements used from the screen-used boxes? I believe you were in the loop on that session.

You can apply a leather balm that sometimes helps. Smith's Leather Balm is my go to.
I wouldn't worry about the minor scuffing. Leather takes on character that way

Alay got a reaction from chicken45 in How do you choose rank insignia?
I personally like to pick an on screen character that matches the costume I'm doing, and let that decide my rank/accessories. I did that for my ESB Officer with Lt. Sheckil, as well as Captain Khurgee (in my forum signature)!

Why pick? Collect them all.
There are plenty of stories of officers of every rank you can imagine, jobs and ages.

Hello,
I’m brand new and working on my first costume. I was planing on an Imperial Security Services Officer (Non-Saga) version 1, and was planning on ordering my accessories from Bailey Builds based on recommendations from local garrison members.
My real question is how do people choose ranks? I’d like something in the middle of the range since if this was real life based on my age I’d be in the back half of my career. I’m also worried about guessing wrong since to my untrained eye the rank bars are very similar.
Would this work with my ISS costume? I’m still looking for a breakdown of the various colors and placement just so I can start to understand the logic like with IRL military rank badges. My thought was I have a couple of peers who are majors in the army so having someone in their 40s show up with the equivalent of oak leaves doesn’t seem too crazy. Or if someone can point me to the ISS equivalent of captains bars I would be grateful. https://ezrabaileybuilds.com/products/imperial-rank-badge-major-star-wars-officer-costume-push-button
Thanks in advance.

Some additional photos of the original box popped up over on the Spec Ops forums, once again by fb501:
This should give a pretty good idea to the surface finish (and how tiny these are!). I remember seeing gray chiplines in one of Partagaz' belt boxes,
Hope this helps folks out!

Hello. Here's my version.
I made a 3D model of it.

I noticed in our CRLs for Non-Saga we're using sizing that is too large.
I did some image sleuthing to compare the Rogue One style boxes against these, using photoshop to count pixels and get an approximation.
Using this image, and the two officer boxes shown
The belt leather has a known width of 2 inches.
That measurement gives us a pixel count of 53px.
Dividing that number by 2, we get a ratio of 26.5px/in.
Going against this wider part of the box from this angle, we get a size of 70px. When applied to the ratio of 26.5, we get an approximate height of 2.64"
Repeating the process on the other officer for the width
Belt height: 44px (22.25px/in)
Box width: 40px
Approximately 1.8" in Width
To prove out that these are bigger, I repeated the same process against some Rogue One boxes:
Belt: 29px
Ratio: 14.5px/in
Box Height: 39px
Box Width: 27px
Box Inches: Approx 2.7" x 1.86"
Belt: 23px
11.5px/in
Box Height: 35px
Width: 24px
Box In Inches: Apprx 3.04" x 2.08"
One more screen cap
Same process gives me
Belt: 46px
23px/in
Box Height: 67px
Box Height in Inches: ~2.91"
This is consistent with the current CRL of 2"x3" for non-saga in Rogue One and Solo.
Ergo, the Andor boxes are approximately 75-85% of the size
Additionally an image on the SpecOps forum shows a pill box detail on the Aldhanni trooper versions made of resin: https://forum.specops501st.com/topic/8719-imperial-army-trooper-andor-crl-discussion/?do=findComment&comment=106817
"The cut corner" mentioned in the CRL is likely due to the metal bending angles when they casted them in resin for the "stunt" versions. This wording should likely be on both.
I propose this new wording:
Belt boxes (Andor style)
Dimensions are approximately 1.75 inches (44.5 mm) wide, 2.5 inches (63.5 mm) tall and 1 inch (25.4 mm) thick. Two boxes to be worn vertically, one each on either side of the belt buckle.
OPTIONAL Level two certification (if applicable):
Belt boxes are made of metal or cast resin. If resin, they should be painted a gunmetal gray color. Corners have a “stepped 90-degree cutout” in the shape of a square on all four corners of the face of the box. Boxes should have a pill shaped detail in the top and bottom.
Some images based off the measurements I calculated above: https://imgur.com/a/u0RSdBI

Alay reacted to buckrogersbarker in Honest question: Why did the Sith Eternal Officer take so long to clear?
You can read the entire history and development here chronologically starting with page one here. The thread and initial posts was created by an LMO at the same time the visual guides were released with the Rise of Skywalker premier in December of 2019.
In March of 2020 a cadet (a person not a fully approved member of the legion) was announced to be working on a costume. The cadet started showing their work and progress taking direction and advice from members, the staff and the LMO who started the thread. By July the body of the costume was mostly finished. Only a few items remained.
By October 2020, the costume was finsihed and the Cadet was ready to submit. They were not aware of the process of getting permission from the LMO office prior to starting and no one had explained this to them. The LMO clears a costume to proceed.... it gets made by the applicant. A CRL is written and if it is written well and the costume is of sufficient quality it is published as a CRL.
The first visible pass of a CRL text is in February 2021 by the applicant.
A full CRL text is posted by the applicant in March 2021 when my administration came into office. That is when the questions started about the back seam of the tunic. Ironically, a German garrison member at this time pointed out the back seams on the Lego minifig of the character (which turned out to be right). The final CRL text was shown at the end of March 2021.
In April I brought in one of the head LMOs to see what we could do to get things started. He came in and stated that the LMO office now voted on if costumes could proceed. This was a new development. The second thing was he wished we had involved the LMO office from the start (the thread was created by the other head LMO and mostly commented on by him up to that point). We were then involved that there was not enough views for the CRL to proceed and it was placed on hold.
And the entire thread went bananas including the previous detachment leader calling foul.
Was the LMO in the right to make this decision? Yes, they are the final arbiter. Was it right. I didn't think so. A lot of people didn't think so. And there was really no indication that this would be stopped until I came into office.
Another LMO who is active in the detachment made a statement of support and a suggestion for getting it cleared. They took down their post and resigned their position.
Over the next month into May a number of members and staff that had been very pro creation for this costume, came out against it in the same thread. The blame for this decision was placed on the entire LMO office that voted. It should be noted that this team is different than this past year's LMO team. Other detachment leaders that do not have IOC costumes created accounts and came in flummoxed at the decision. There was arguments over the people that were for the CRL being paused as they were involved in the publishing of CRLs that didn't have the same references. Old wounds got opened over that and that is why some bring up some CRLs periodically and ask if they can be removed for a lack of references. Promises to check sources and find out conclusively what the detail of the lower back of the tunic were made, but nothing was revealed.
The following year in 2022 I reached out to our Legion Commanding Officer Justin Sonfield and told him the history of this CRL's development. I said it was outrageous that this one detail would prevent it from being published. I stated the cadet was prepared to make any change that would be revealed from finding out this detail. I asked them if they would speak to LFL about it. Justin did and explained the situation. LFL was not able to provide a reference photo, but Justin was able to show them a line of of many tunic back seams. It was something of a police line up, but LFL fingered the one they said was correct. It turned out to be the same seams on the LEGO minifig. The cadet made modifications to their tunic and we were able to submit. The LMO office accepted it and it was published. That happened under @mrrikki LMO administration and I have admired his commitment to get things created. Both him and Justin Sonfield are committed to a pro costume growth platform.
