Let's start with the Left pocket. Pin the 2 pieces together and sew just like everything else.

Once you have the pieces sewn and reinforced, it is time to press. Press the seam flat, I prefer to start with the side that has the Interfacing on it, just to get it out of the way. Once the seam is flat, I use more heat bonding seam tape. On to the other side. I press that flat and more seam tape.

I fold the back piece in half (about where the interfacing ends) and match up the sides. Press that flat and voila. The pocket is done.

I tend to pin the sides together and use a zigzag stitch to make it one piece.

Okay, for those continuing to follow along, here's a bigger update.

This was  the third or fourth time of tearing it apart and sewing it back up, but the sleeves were (mostly) right. I say mostly because one is inside-out, and they've got that poofy look someone mentioned earlier.

And here's how I fixed that.

First, I absolutely cheated for the handstitch to get the top piece onto the coat. Lay top out, find the 5/8" seam allowance, pin.

A friend told me to do it that way to save headaches! I will definitely continue that way.

Also, to get that nice square corner, nipped the extra fabric up there to where the edge was at the stitch (will take a picture with the real suiting fabric when I get there).

Which brings us to the sleeves...

What you see here is a sleeve with the seam ripped, and ready for me to pin it as close as I can WHILE I'M WEARING IT. That is going to be my best advice to you to make sure the sleeves and chest/back meet up just right on you.

I mean, you can get help too with that step, but that takes the fun of stabbing yourself and cursing out of the equation!

    That's our new seam line.

(sorry, didn't take pics of making the new 5/8" allowance off that piece, but it's pretty straightforward. Mark your seam line, then measure a line 5/8" off of that line)

ROUND SHOULDERS!!! This made me happy.

Collar did't get perfect on this, and I did too many layers on the dart, but me gusta. Need to fix the skirt, there aren't pleats after all. And that front is like the front of the coat.

    Oh well, progress!

    Greetings again IOC,

I want to thank you for your many well thought out questions. It is clear we have a lot of passionate members that care for the IOC. I also would like to thank Bob for his passion as well, it takes a strong person to accept a nomination for a job like this and I thank him for his ideas.

It is clear the main objective of either of us will be the CRL completion. Different methods, but it will get done. What you, as members, need to decide is whether you want someone familiar with the current detachment methods and personnel, or someone that only had 15 posts prior to his nomination. Bob is a great guy and devoted 501st member, I’ve met him a few times now and enjoy his company. I hope we can continue that after the election.

As for Rob Lyth, I’m sorry you didn’t take your nomination and this process as serious as you could have.  I’d hope a person that thought it was necessary to accept a nomination would participate by answering the specific questions provided by our members.  I hope you can join us on the forums and add to the detachment.

I’d like to thank my staff, current and future, for the support and ideas. I look forward to working with you this year. I hope you, the members, give me the opportunity to serve as your Detachment Leader this year. I’m excited to implement the ideas we have for the detachment. The CRL team program will be the first to get our attention. The process is slow, but it is made so much slower by the number of new costumes added by all the new sources. Sure, some of the other detachments have whipped some out too, but they may not have had so many. With that being said, we will make them our priority.

The mentoring/cadet type program is a great approach to get more members active on the forum and to aid new members. It should have been done sooner, but now is a time good as any. We will iron out the details and put out the call for mentors, a much catchier name will be decided upon too. I think we can use at least one of Bob’s ideas, with a twist that is. An IOC Facebook members page is a good idea. But not for official business, but as a social page where members can chat and even gripe in real time. It will be a good place to post breaking news and link members to the forums for the details.

Lastly, I want to thank BJ for his dedication to this detachment for so many years and his friendship. He saw something in me at Celebration 6 and that lead to my appointment as DO and ultimately, Executive Officer. I’m glad you will be available to assist in the future.

I look forward to continuing my service to the IOC.

I know I'm walking in on the tail end of this, and many before me have asked wonderful questions. Congratulations on you all for being it this far, and I'm going to try and start this with a decent lead into the question.

I've been a Legion member now seven years as of the 27th of this month. I've only got one costume, a Bridge Crewman, haven't traveled that extensively, tend to stay in my lane for the most part and not make waves.

This year, some fool nominated me for what you bunch are taking questions for. I declined, one because I have no great desire for leadership, and two because I knew that would be like putting a turtle on a fencepost. But, it did get me thinking that I want to help my only Detachment more.

So, here's the questions: Where do fools like me fit in to the picture? How can we help get from the point A of today to the point B of this time next year?

Thank you for your time, and good luck.

I have a question for Robert G. Barker. You want to push more CRLs through. How are you going to convince people to make the costume, take pictures, and help draft the CRL? We really can not make a CRL without someone having first made the costume. All of the pictures in a CRL MUST be from members, as using LFL images is a strict Copyright Violation. We don't even have an ANH Staff Officer yet; I plan on making one this summer for the CRL and tutorial. What makes you think you can force people to make something for any CRL?

Perhaps it would have been best to reach out to those you wish to keep on staff. For the Record; I am BJ's Merch Officer, and my loyalty is to him. BJ has asked me to be Mark's Merch Officer, and as such my loyalty is extended to him as well. I am a firm believer in only running on one ticket (there must be consequences for our choices) and as such will not continue as Merch Officer for another DL. I cannot speak for the rest of the current staff, but perhaps you should ask them personally. So I will ask again: Who makes up your command staffs and their positions.

This question is for Robert. You have stated: "I am not asking for the forum to be shut down and I am glad it suits your needs, but it doesn’t suit the needs of most imperial officers in the legion.  This lack of service has meant that they go their own way and consult only with their garrisons.  A closed facebook group would not supplant what you get here.  It would add access for people that would not normally go here and provide them with a connection to the detachment.  A worth cause rather than them wandering the wilderness."
Considering the forum has over 6,000 members, and at minimum 200 active posters, I find your generalizations about "most imperial officers in the legion" to be glib, and frankly untrue. In ten years as an officer, I believe you have missed opportunities to connect with active members all over the world by not participating here. There is a method in place here for hopeful recruits to introduce themselves, find a dearth of information, and get help from active officers in creating the best costumes they can.
My question is this: How can that be achieved from a closed facebook group? For those that are on social media, we have a very active open facebook page, would you continue to see that remains accessible or would you close the group? If you operated two facebook pages and a forum simultaneously, would that not confuse new people more?

Alright. First off this is going to be a work in progress tutorial. I would say that this is a intermediate level tutorial. You should know how the machine works and be confident that you can sew a straight line, and there is NOTHING wrong with getting some cheap fabric and making a mock up. I am going to upload it in stages. This is my first tutorial, so there are likely to be loads of questions and changes. I do ask that you let me finish it before asking., It should take me a few weeks.

The pattern I am using can be found at:
    http://s268.photobucket.com/user/Hawk220/library/Officer%20Pattern%20ID
This pattern fits M-XL, (slight thin to slightly over weight) for anything else, the pattern will need to be modified.

    You will need:
2 1/2 yards of Fabric at 52" wide
2 1/2 yards of Lining at 52" wide
4 yards of interfacing (I use 950F Shirtailor)

I will start this tutorial just after the pieces have been cut out. All seam allowances are 1/2 inch.
