  1. I'd guess that most things for the new show was CAD designed and 3d printed, in resin or PLA.  In fact on the area left of the black center I think I can see print lines.  Rapid manufacturing is just so prevalent these days for small bits and bobs that are one off.

The center bit might be a bit of hose, or just another printed item that's hit with rattle can black paint.

  2. Straight Edge Knife / Hobby Knife / Box cutter / XActo knife will all cut through actual leather pretty easily.  If it's a plastic leather (Pleather) belt, your results may vary.

When I'm making a custom sized belt, I cut it to length, then punch the hole(s).

Hello! I'm new on this forum and I want to join the 501st, but there's one item I can't find: The rank tiles approved on the 501st.. I need an Amazon link since other pages are unknown to me, any help?

    Honor, Duty, Empire.

Hey Enrique!  I'd stick clear of Amazon as I don't know of any sellers there that are up to 501st par.

There are several sellers directly here through the forums if you're looking for completed ones.  Check out the Ongoing Sales section.  I sell rank bars and many other things through my website.

If you're looking to DIY a rank bar, check out my post here for some info on what you'll need!

  4. 1" aluminum stock, 1/8" thickness is what I use for all of mine.  You can buy push buttons from Newark or Mouser (EAO 01-901 series) or other electronic vendors.  I sell buttons directly too PM me if you want a few.

Cut off the tabs on the inserts, then epoxy putty them on, or add E6000 or 5 minute epoxy.  Polish the metal beforehand with high grit sandpaper or a Dremel.

I use a chop saw / miter saw to cut my bars, but a band saw works too.

  5. fb501 on SpecOps provided measurements saying they were different while present on sceen:

Cool screen used of these ones was only 67mm tall, 45mm wide and 25mm deep.

He says they're a cast of a 3d print, which is possible, but the bending marks, slight over bends in sections, etc, lead me strongly to believe at least some lineage of the parts were originally bent metal.  I'd be surprised if actual metal ones were not used for close up shots with the background characters having painted ones.

Materials aside, based on that measurement from the set piece, they're smaller.

  6. Based on the images provided on spec ops it's hard to conclude the casts are of anything other than bent metal.  The location of the seems joining together to create that square and the slight buckling on the sides from the bending.

The measurements provided over there are from set used piece.  My high definition cross comparisons all give the same ballpark result.

It's interesting that the rogue one boxes had the pillbox.  We should find additional references and add that to the CRL in the future.

  7. I noticed in our CRLs for Non-Saga we're using sizing that is too large.

    image.png

I did some image sleuthing to compare the Rogue One style boxes against these, using photoshop to count pixels and get an approximation.

Using this image, and the two officer boxes shown

    VnjDq8K.png

The belt leather has a known width of 2 inches.

    wkavzes.png

That measurement gives us a pixel count of 53px.

Dividing that number by 2, we get a ratio of 26.5px/in.

    uZ2qWc9.png

Going against this wider part of the box from this angle, we get a size of 70px.  When applied to the ratio of 26.5, we get an approximate height of 2.64"

Repeating the process on the other officer for the width

    rHKQe8d.png

    T4b48Js.png

    Belt height: 44px (22.25px/in)

    Box width: 40px

    Approximately 1.8" in Width

To prove out that these are bigger, I repeated the same process against some Rogue One boxes:

    IJ2JlhJ.png

    h6KFH7L.png

    CpE2rWJ.png

    7pis3R2.png

    Belt: 29px

    Ratio: 14.5px/in

    Box Height: 39px

    Box Width: 27px

    Box Inches: Approx 2.7" x 1.86"

    a7bmMNz.png

    f2BMGhz.png

    rKKVSY2.png

    Belt: 23px

    11.5px/in

    Box Height: 35px

    Width: 24px

    Box In Inches:  Apprx 3.04" x 2.08"

    One more screen cap

    AXiJVLG.png

    Same process gives me

    Belt: 46px

    23px/in

    Box Height: 67px

    Box Height in Inches: ~2.91"

This is consistent with the current CRL of 2"x3" for non-saga in Rogue One and Solo.

Ergo, the Andor boxes are approximately 75-85% of the size

Additionally an image on the SpecOps forum shows a pill box detail on the Aldhanni trooper versions made of resin: https://forum.specops501st.com/topic/8719-imperial-army-trooper-andor-crl-discussion/?do=findComment&comment=106817

"The cut corner" mentioned in the CRL is likely due to the metal bending angles when they casted them in resin for the "stunt" versions.  This wording should likely be on both.

    I propose this new wording:

    Belt boxes (Andor style)

    • Dimensions are approximately 1.75 inches (44.5 mm) wide, 2.5 inches (63.5 mm) tall and 1 inch (25.4 mm) thick.
    • Two boxes to be worn vertically, one each on either side of the belt buckle.

OPTIONAL Level two certification (if applicable):

    • Belt boxes are made of metal or cast resin.  If resin, they should be painted a gunmetal gray color.
    • Corners have a “stepped 90-degree cutout” in the shape of a square on all four corners of the face of the box.
    • Boxes should have a pill shaped detail in the top and bottom.

Thank you so much for getting back to me! You actually answered my question with that, I was wondering if the grey appearance was some other color that I just wasn't knowledgeable to.  The Olive Drab is exactly what I'm after for my kit. After some more research, I have found a seller "Clothears Costumes" https://clothearscostumes.com/ that has the Olive Drab. Are there any other sellers you can recommend?

I personally have a Clothears one, which I've had for almost 5 years now, and it's pretty much my #1 recommendation!

WampaWear and Anovos are also pretty good choices, though I've not personally owned either I'd like to eventually.  Magnoli Clothiers has good reviews as well!

If you're going for the Olive Drab, I'd stay away from CosplaySky.  While approvable, it's a little too green in my opinion.  The movie used color is called Field gray, which looks olive under warm lighting, and gray under cool lighting (which is why they look mostly gray on the film sets!)

    Hello,

This is Daniel "CaptainCunning" Congleton. I'm located in West-Central Saskatchewan, Canada and I'm requesting an advisor for help starting either a Non-Saga Imperial Security Services Officer or a Mimban Officer. Thanks in advance!

Hey Daniel!  Sorry I missed your post earlier, I'll have an Advisor assigned to you shortly! :)

Hello, my name is Shay. I am an official member of the MMCC and looking to join the 501st with an imperial officer uniform! I am excited to join the IOC, but I am running into trouble finding a maker for the uniform and hats. I have looked into Cosplaysky for the uniform and 20eyesdesign for the hat. I received these from a member of the IOC in Arizona, and while these references seem great, I am running into the issue that I am wanting to build an Imperial Line Officer with the Grey uniform and can not find a maker of the uniform with the grey color. Does anyone have any recommendations of makers of the uniform that have the grey option?

    Thank you so much!

Hey Shay!  By Grey Uniform, do you mean the Olive Drab Line Officer style that can appear grey under certain lighting (as seen throughout Empire Strikes Back, for example?), or do you mean more like the Imperial Army Officer style?

  10. I previously had an eyebrow piercing.  I'd swap it out for official photos/etc with a clear one, but my garrison is very laid back so we let people troop with kinda whatever within reason.  If you're doing an official/LFL sanctioned event we usually recommend clear ones or removing them if possible.  I know my eyebrow one would immediately close up if I swapped out, so that was a no-go.

Let's not forget; if your goal is to join the Legion, the costumes we make are used for charity and community. It isn't about being that one officer who was on screen for 3 seconds or in a comic for 3 panels and going to cocktails parties. That's cool, just don't lose the plot of why we do this.

This seems like a weird take away.  I spent 3 years and >$3k on a costume for a comic character that basically no one has ever heard of, including tracking down original artists and writers to get their take on references that may no longer exist or have never been published--and I don't even consider myself that much of a costuming nerd, compared to some people I've met.  I know folks who only ever do con events or other "fun" lesser charity focused events.

I mean I've done plenty of trips to the oncology wing too myself, but the legion and reasons for costuming are varied.  Some people are more about the costuming aspect than the charity aspect, and some are about the charity aspect way more than the costuming.  I think we need to cater to both as a legion.  I don't think having a well written CRL for random characters like Xizor or Zuckuss hurt the charity work we do in any way.

During my tenure as a DL, my philosophy of CRLs has always been the focus on the bare minimum approvable costume, and gutting out extra detail facts as much as possible to be moved to something within the detachment itself; it's why I always had a tough time reading over comic and video game CRLs, especially when they use things like measurements, material types, etc.  But at the core of it, the detachments to me are all about the costumes, so it's no surprise our focus is there and making the best records we can.
