@lantern2745 unfortunately the face character part is NOT superfluous.  There are garrisons currently denying members from doing face characters.  They say "there is nothing in this for the CRL" and then they won't let them do it.  This was a specific request from a number of members and we can confirm their garrisons deny them.  These are members with approved Line officer costumes.  They want to do costumes from the games and comics and this seems the best place for it.

I'll admit I'm a little unclear on your point here.  Can you give some examples of specifically why people have been declined... other than the hat issue?

Applicants have been definitely declined because they were not wearing a hat, emulating their favorite officer.  But that goes away once the hat goes into the Optional column (although I have a tweak to that idea, below).  We're already creating a CRL that will give broad flexibility to the specific configuration.

For hair and eye color, I think we should stick with the traditional categories that have long been used.  "Hair and appearance" and perhaps "Colored contact lenses" (with "if appropriate" wording... mostly to cover aliens).  With these additions, I don't believe we would need to invent a new category for "face characters" which could set up odd conflicts since it's so broad.  We can still capture the intent of your additions, I just think we should stick to the long-used categories that already exist.

Face characters who do not have a specific CRL are simply line officers (sorry, "Imperial Military Officers, Green") in the costumer's chosen configuration.  There is no specific need to call them out as face characters or not... EVERY character ever seen from the front is a "face character" in the broad sense.

  2. It's really up to your local garrison's rules, what they'll allow at your local troops.

Generally, as others have said, you want a neat professional appearance as much as possible.  There's no strict requirements about tattoos being covered up, unless you are portraying a face character.

Piercings should be limited to a small hoop or stud, and larger or more unusual ones should be replaced with clear or flesh colored holders, where necessary to keep something in them (particularly on the face or large gauge holes).

  3. The animated style code cylinder clips are essentially the OT clips (in silver) but without the little part that clips around the cylinder, and pokes through the pushes down the paddle-shaped part.  They haven't really been changed since we first saw them in Rebels, as I recall.

There are some good files with the OT clips posted here in one of the DIY code cylinder threads.  (I think Philo also makes them?)  Looks like the Clone Wars animated versions are slightly more squared off at the top, which is sort of in line with their animated style.

Here's a work-in-progress shot from the first set of cylinders I made, years ago.  (Just the paddle parts, not the T shaped bit that was left out)  Note the tip gets curled under to make the squared off bottom of the clip.

  4. Hi Heather!  Welcome to the IOC.

Basically there are roughly three classes of uniform, generally speaking.

At the low end, there are cheap Chinese Cosplay companies like CosplaySky.  They CAN make an approvable costume, but it's always a bit of a gamble as to whether it will fit you properly, and how much it will cost to get it tailored into an approvable state if they don't.  Sometimes you can get super lucky and fit an off-the-rack costume (just referring to pants and tunic) for under $100, and other times you can pay full price (a little under $200) with their customization fees included and still have to pay another $100 or so to get it to truly fit you.  Your body type will likely play into your odds, here, unfortunately.  The more stick-like you are, the easier the fit, the curvier you are, the more complicated.  After that, you also still need a matching hat (CosplaySky's hat is garbage) and accessories. (belt, boots, rank bars, at minimum)  This puts you in a uniform that is just approvable.  The color fabric they use is... not great... but it passes.  Just.  (Their black uniform fabric is much better, but the same fitting issues apply)

At the mid-range you can find a company like WampaWear that sells a very nice uniform for a bit under $500, as I recall ... but it is ONLY off-the rack sizing, for male body types.  If that fits you, or works with only minimal tailoring, you're in really good shape.  Their color isn't perfect, but it's WORLDS better than the CosplaySky fabric, and their hats are excellent (their belts work just fine too).  Still need the boots and rank bars, on top of the base uniform, but in the end you'll be looking sharp.  Again... if your body type works with what they offer.

Over that, at the top tier you get superior fabric and truly custom fitting from people who really know what they're doing... but you're looking at minimum $700-$1000 for the high end suppliers, like MazCave (if they're taking orders), Magnoli Clothiers, TheEmpiresNewClothes, and Clothears, for the base tunic, pants and hat.  Bear in mind you're paying for what is essentially a custom suit from a tailor, at that point, so these prices are not really unusual for what you're getting.

Here is something that we just thought to think about, we were staring at the how he hung the dark saber on the belt, and we only have a not great picture from the promo art of season two, and it looks like it is a drapery hook hung on the inside belt under the sash.

I just got it today and took a some new photos.

    Hook-

Interesting option, but (a) I need to see the source for this, and more importantly (b) you mentioned that was a S2 promo photo, and this is the S1 CRL thread. ;)

Add it to your build thread, and when it comes time to do an S2 variant we can take a look!

  6. I updated the Dark Saber text in the OP to the following: (also tweaked the photo to correct some lighting discrepancies between the two views)

    ur3H0Y3.jpg

    • The Dark Saber should be a scratch made, or high end replica, in the Mandalorian style (oval), not the Clone Wars style (rectangular)
    • Dark saber body should be approximately 11” long and based in a gloss black finish
    • The cross section shall be oval in shape
    • There are 4 vents on each side near the emitter
    • There are 8 raised rings at the bottom
    • Should have 2 raised rectangles on the hilt similar in pattern to the cummerbund
    • Emitter should have an angle and should have an up-swept guard towards emitter

    • Level 2: The Dark Saber should be capable of being belt worn with the emitter facing upwards (detachable blade or no blade)
    • Should be a 1:1 scale of the Saber used in the show

    • Level 3: The Dark Saber raised detail on the hilt is rubberized

This line seems a bit  confusing to me-

    • Level 2: Must reflect 1:1 scale in size and must appear to be of metal or chrome stock.

The darksaber is gloss black not so chrome. With the ridges, it scatters the light oddly  but it is black rubber on gloss black hilt.

Most sabers that are currently coming online will have metal ridges to keep production costs down.

I feel like the leather patches  in the leg on show   dont quite  cover half the leg, maybe 2/5, but the toy does have more have half. Not sure.  I'm looking to tweak them anyway, but want this to be the final tweak to them.

Also I think the leather panels on the legs are in 2 Parts, not one. Might be good for the level 2. I'll be fixing this as soon as I final determination on size and how may sections.

I agree the Dark Saber line needs tweaking.  That wasn't my edit, but confess I didn't double-check it at the time.  I'll talk to the guilty party and clean that up.

Here's the money shot for the leather inner thigh reinforcement patches:

You can see pretty clearly that it comes up to a [slightly rounded] point, and only about 1/2-3/4 up the thigh, not all the way to the crotch.

Images added to OP.  All are ready except for two placeholder images, which will be swapped with high res versions when available.

Not sure what two images are - was wondering if we need a better shot of the shoulder bells, as well as the other side of the cloak (since one of the texts referred to both sides)

I had denoted the particular images as "low res placeholders" right under the photos, when I added them earlier today, but I just got the final images (gloves and boots), so everything is current now.

I agree it would be nice to get a nice shot of the inside of the cloak, but according to the costumer, it's a bit complicated to get the shot, logistically, and frankly you can see everything important about the inside in the top photo, with the costumer wearing the cloak, so I'm not really pushing for it.  If we can get one after the fact, it can always be added later.

Yes, this does have  a back zipper, when the boots were commissioned, we did not have any images specifically of any zippers of the boots and we went with what giovanni thought would be best and in line with other boots of that style that he had done.

Gotcha.  Your boots DO look very good, of course, and I think they should be approvable, but we can't ignore the clear references we have now.  So I think what I'll do is move the inside zipper requirement to Level 2.  I've made that edit in the OP, now.

You can probably add a zipper to your boots fairly inexpensively, without needing all new boots, if you want to go for Level 2, but this way you can still be approved without needing to change them.  (Assuming the LMOs don't disagree)

  10. The CRL team has completed our work on the CRL text, and I'm updating the main post with the current draft text as soon as I finish typing this.

We have a few questions to resolve with @whitmers but this is nearly ready for submission to the LMOs.

WHITMERS: I believe your boots have a back zipper, but all the references we could find showed a zipper inside the leg, which is confirmed for S2 but not for S1.  Do you have any references that show the boots to have a back zipper, as opposed to inside?

  11. Great offer!  Just posting the commendation... someone else should win instead of me, should my name fall out of the hat, so pick another. :)  (not that I would mind owning one, but I really already have an embarrassing number of rank bars LOL, so someone else surely needs it more!)

  12. Oh, regarding shoes, there are only three sources that I know of, short of having a pair of boots custom made:

    1) Magnoli Clothiers (the best made, but the price is... *HIGH*)

    2) Imperial Boots (semi-reasonable price, and the second best we've seen, but they only do limited runs of these boots because they're not popular enough, so you may need to contact them to find out if/when they'll do another)

    3) CrowProps (custom sizes available, custom made, semi-reasonable price, but their leather is thinner and doesn't look as good as the other two options as a result... but they're actually available)

The other accessories (belt buckle, although you'll need to source the belt (simple 2" black leather, not hard), code cylinders, holster, etc) are available from PhiloProps on Etsy.

  13. None of the cosplay sites are going to give you a costume that will pass 501st approval.  These costumes are just too intricate, and they're geared towards the high end Halloween crowd, basically.

There aren't many sources for FO officer uniforms, unfortunately.  Katie Keith at TheEmpiresNewClothes (Etsy) was (is) one of the very best, but she's behind on existing commissions and not taking any new ones for some time to come.

The only option that comes to mind right now is possibly MazCave (also on Etsy).  They are probably your best shot at getting one made in a reasonable amount of time.  (which still won't be fast)  Send them a message, because they do costumes that aren't listed in their store (and the ones that are, are all placeholder down payments, anyway, not the actual price).

Outside of that, your best bet is to find a local tailor who is willing to undertake it on commission, and be prepared to do a LOT of research on every detail, because outside of the 501st, not many standard tailors understand the level of accuracy we look for.

  14. Lots of typos in those CRLs over the years.  A big review and cleanup is on our to-do list this year, trying to get them all nice and uniform, so an Imperial Buckle on one uniform's description always matches all the others (unless there genuinely is a difference, of course).
